While we’re on the topic, Sarah Palin’s interview didn’t work out so well for CNN either. The guy who got the get, sometime investigative reporter Drew Griffin, already has a reputation as a hack but nobody guessed that his worst moment would come like this. For once in my life I’ll recommend that you head over to National Review and read the story. Griffin should resign and save his network the trouble.

Sure, this guy’s a joke and the question unfair/out of context. But isn’t the fact that she sat down with this numbskull further proof of her poor judgment?

From your link to the Corner:
Governor Palin, how do you manage to keep your head up when everyone’s being so tough on you?!?!? Craptastic!

Could you translate this to something a very square 40 y.o. can understand?
And then get offa my lawn.

In other Fail News, it looks like the blame-game is coming as the rats start to jump the ship.

@Comrade Jake: …it looks like the blame-game is coming as the rats start to jump the ship.
Waaaaa ha ha ha.
Perhaps Obama – or more likely, Biden – could stand up and say "Now, this is no time for playing the blame game. I believe we can all come together and agree that the Republican party is the smoking wreck of a turdburger delivery van and everyone in it is equally tone-deaf and stupid."
liberatemeiexinfernis
no way, I want all the major news networks to go down like the sinking Titanic. To this day CNN never really did a thorough investigation of McCain and his past, and same goes with respect to Sarah Palin. This is failure of leadership at the very top level . and if their hacks..um sorry reporters cant do a halfway decent job, then the whole network needs to go bankrupt. Can anyone even name one GOOD reporter, no commentator, but reporter worth his or her salt at CNN?

It’s the freaking Waldorf Astoria, do they even have anything on the menu that ISN’T caviar or lobster?
Joe Max
That was a particularly stupid move on Drew Griffin’s part. There’s more than enough bad press on Palin from conservative commentators – heck, he could have used Christo Buckley’s opinions, and still said it was from the National Review.
I hate to have to say that Rich Lowry was misused, but it’s a fact.

Oh, but it’s gonna be kind of fun to watch our own little pet trolls’ heads explode over the next two weeks.

It’s the "Iranian caviar" and the receipt that just sends it over the top in utter hilariousness. In spite of my craving for bottled microbeer, I’m no elite, so I have no idea if Iranian caviar is good or not.
Meanwhile, Sarah Palin has been the recipient of $150K worth of clothes and hair stylin’. That’s not elitist there. Nope.

I was using my feet to change the channel before, and as I was flipping by, I saw a CBN feature with Sarah Palin. I didn’t keep it on for very long, because I featured the stupid germs would be infectious, but from what I did hear, apparently the McCain-Palin campaign has information that proves Obama’s relationship with Ayers was deeper than one or two meetings on some board. What’s more, she never heard supporters yell out anything threatening or violent at a rally.
I, for one, was glad that she cleared that up. I definitely look forward to hearing what sort of extensive relationship that only the McCain campaign discovered. They must be really, really good if every other major news organization in the country missed some blatantly obvious stuff.
Soylent Green
No he isn’t. Nor is any other pundit or anyone directly attached to the campaign. They’re not that stupid, and have all the code words they need. So you may as well stop wishing for it.
Comrade Jake
So I’ve been staying in Cambridge, MA this week. I don’t think I’ve seen a single McCain ad. Meanwhile, I’ve seen at least five different Obama ads.
I assume they’re running ads here because some of the stations reach into Southern NH. If Obama’s going after NH that hard, I have to imagine he’s blowing McCain out of the water just about everywhere else, no?
Comrade Jake
@Brian J:
During the Democratic primaries, I caught a little of CBN one night. It was piles of stupid, condensed. Pat was saying how he was sure we’d be looking at a President Clinton in 2009. I’m not sure he said God told him that, but he might have come close.
Turns out, not so much.
Brian J
I would imagine he’s just not taking anything for granted. I hope more information comes out about the expansion of resources into Kentucky and West Virginia and the re-expansion of resources in Georgia and North Dakota.
dewberry
@Comrade Jake:
There must be national ad buys. Because we’re seeing a fair number of ads even here in Texas (all positive, pro-Obama ads). I don’t think there’s any way anyone thinks Texas is gonna swing blue (but the local Republicans are quite worried about a potential Harris County sweep ’em out).
I also think that there’s a concentrated effort to end up with a much wider popular vote lead (leading to the mandate narrative) than we’ve seen in a while. And they’ve got the money to really try.
Charity
@Comrade Scrutinizer: And Fareed Zakaria, but more as a commentator rather than a journalist.
Martin
No. Obama is dumping money in a wide number of markets to control the remaining days of the campaign. McCain doesn’t have the cash to overcome Obama in one state, let alone 10. Obama is quite simply smothering McCain, not giving him any air.
Brian J
I really wish the information about expenditures was more widely available and more detailed, especially for previous races. It’d help put so much in perspective.
But anyway, yes, it looks like Obama is trying to smother McCain. I don’t know if it’s really possible, but you have to wonder whether the campaign is going to spend money in states that are close to and therefore share media markets with swing states (assuming that’s possible). In other words, if the Obama campaign is going to swamp them in North Carolina and then buy a lot of ad time in Georgia, will they do it in South Carolina? How about in Arkansas because of Missouri? What about Texas because of New Mexico? Maybe it’s not possible in the end, but if ends up winning by a substantial margin in the popular vote, perhaps the tide will be strong enough to throw a few really, really red states into the blue column.
I don’t remember where the claim that Obama has essentially bought up the remaining time came from, but it looks to be true, so assuming that it is, if he has money left over, perhaps it’s worth the investment. I guess it might depend on how much is being spent on GOTV efforts and this block of time on October 29 and also on how many of the small number of staffers he had in place at the beginning of the summer have still been working in those states.
A Squirrel
Edit: Mary linked it earlier…
That is really terrible reporting. Of all the legit questions that guy could have asked…What an embarrassment.
Ed Marshall
I may have misunderstood this, but I believe Obama bought every last minute available in contested states. Like there is nothing left for McCain to buy if he had the money to do it.
Soylent Green
Maxing out the turnout in every market will boost the vote total (strengthening Obama’s mandate) while helping ensure wins in downticket races. The more Dem gains we see in Congress, the more he can accomplish in office. I suspect the massive contribution haul has exceeded the wildest dreams of his campaign managers and is well beyond what they budgeted for.
It’s good to be the king.
Martin
Obama entered October with $130M. McCain $45M. Obama can raise all through October. McCain can’t – that’s all he’s got. And for ad buys, the candidates get premium rates for advertising. They pay the lowest rate that the network or station has charged in the last 60 days. The parties don’t get this rate – so Obama can buy 30 minutes at infomercial prices while the RNC would have to pay World Series prices.
And what advantage Obama has in dollars he has 5x over in volunteer staff.
It’s not for shared media, but for downticket races. Going into Kentucky is all about beating McConnell. Georgia about beating Chambliss.
Stuck in the Funhouse
And me likes the streak of ruthlessness in Obama. Not meanness, or piling on, just a willingness to go for jugular in cool and purposeful way. When needed, this single mindedness and focus we are seeing from his campaign is a characteristic American voters are looking for in a president. In other words, a willingness to stand up for oneself when attacked, though not attacking just because you can. I have thought for a long time that it isn’t the content of the GOP attack and smear strategy that has been so effective for them against democrats. It is that quality of backing down, or hesitating and later overreacting in the face of those attacks that have killed dems in POTUS elections.
Brian J
Is there any word on how much the DSCC is planning on dropping into the Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, and Texas, and perhaps Maine? At least two of those didn’t look promising until recently, but assuming we only get two out of five of those, we’d get to 60, if we won in Oregon, New Mexico, Virginia, Colorado, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Alaska, and North Carolina, which seems very possible, if fivethirtyeight.com can be believed. Perhaps we’ll fall short, but I’m watching a "Hardball" repeat now, and both Charlie Cook and Chuck Todd seem to think there’s a very good shot that this race is shaping up to be BIG for Obama.
Brian J
Well, yes, for the most part, I would think. I just wonder if there’s some sort of information that says there’s a chance, even if it’s a very small one, that Obama could take the state. In the case of Georgia, some polling there has been very, very close.
Martin
DNC and Obama are also moving resources in – so I’m guessing that MS, KY, GA, MN will all have Dems massively outspending GOP. And MS, GA, and to a lesser degree KY will see unprecedented turnouts for Dems, so there’s a good chance that the polling is under-reporting for the Dem there.
I think there will be a number of surprises on 11/4 – on both sides. Should be a fun night.
jcricket
It’s all about playing until the whistle blows, and not stopping a moment before. To steal another sports metaphor, leave it all out there on the field.
Not only will this be a rare 2nd "wave election" (2006 + 2008) for the Dems, we have the potential to do clean sweeps – not losing a single seat we’re defending (Tim Mahoney in Florida excepted, and good riddance), and picking up an almost equal or greater number of seats compared to 2006.
I will be happy with any number of Senate seats. Obviously 60+ is best, but almost anything is a success if combined with the WH, bigger House majorities and all the various state level races we can pick up.
And frankly, as we’re finding out with the AG scandal and Palin, there’s a lot of Republican shenanigans yet to uncover. If we play our cards right, we could sweep 2010 as well. That will take some deft politicing on the parts of Obama and the Dems in Congress (otherwise known as taking credit for the shit that they fix) – as well as making sure everyone knows all the f’ed up shit the Republicans did.
Don’t listen to the "not time for blame" or "concern troll" crowds – investigate the shit out of the Republicans. They deserve it, and unlike Whitewater, we’ll probably have a 10:1 conviction:investigation ratio.
jcricket
Let me add – it’s about controlling the narrative. Bush claimed a mandate both times and it almost "worked" (in that the Dems in Congress believed W had a mandate). If Obama actually has a big popular vote margin and electoral vote lead, along with bigger margins in both houses of Congress – his mandate will be real, and he will need to get the press to understand that.
Brian J
[knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood]
Upon learning that Obama is down in South Dakota(!) by only eight, I’m going to make a rather ridiculous, somewhat superstitious prediction, one that I reserve the right to modify in the next two weeks: Obama will win 404 votes in the Electoral College, making him the nation’s forty-fourth president. He will win all of the states that people currently rate as swing states, taking him to 375. He will also win North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, and Georgia.
In addition, the Democrats will get up to 60 or 61 Senate seats, and the Democrats will also get a minimum of 20 more House seats.
Meanwhile, Republicans across the country will be shitting themselves.
[knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood]
Seriously though, it should be a fun night regardless. I hope to be home in time to watch results come in, but if the polls in Indiana close at 6:00 PM and we learn soon after they are good for Obama, I’ll be feeling pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. I won’t feel great until they announce that Obama will win. And I won’t feel right until he’s sworn in.
Interestingly enough, Howard Fineman just mentioned on the "Countdown" repeat that David Plouffe told him the campaign isn’t going to send money to Chuck Schumer at the DSCC but might consider spending money on not only Georgia, but Arizona and South Carolina! I really hope they feel up to it, because as you said, we could be seeing some interesting results on November 4.
Soylent Green
Or not. He may lose OH, FL, VA, and MO, leaving only CO (we hope) to give him a slim EV margin of 273 to 265 (assuming the CO polling is valid). It ain’t over till the fat chick does her thing.
South Dakota, you say? Sure, why not? Let’s go for broke and throw in Oklahoma and Utah.

In any case, even though it’s somewhat off topic here, I’m hoping you’ll respond, because I’m very interested to know exactly what you meant when you described an "increase on corporate taxes proposed by Obama [that] starts at dollar one of net profits."
Thanks.
Brian J
Soylent Green, I wasn’t entirely serious, but it’s not that much of a joke either.
Jeff
@Brian J: Well I bet, in June, my Republican brother-in-law from Texas that Obama would take 2/3 of the electoral college. Not only did he tell me recently that he is nervous he is going to lose the bet; but, he is also voting for Obama.
Church Lady
Zuzu-
I’m sorry I didn’t respond. You’re right, I didn’t see it.
Corporate taxes, like individual taxes, are progressive, but only to a point. The rates are 15%, 25%, 34% and then 39% up to 335K in profit. After that, the rate starts to fall, in order to create what amounts to a flat tax of 35% on anything over $335K in corporate profits, no matter how high. In other words, if your company earns $350K, and the guy next door owns a company that ears $600K, both of you are paying taxes at the same rate – 35%.
We fall in the 34% marginal rate, which makes our effective rate (based on the progressive nature) around 30%, give or take a few percent up or down (depending on that year’s profits) starting at dollar one of net profits. Of course, this is just our federal income tax bite, and doesn’t include all of the other state and local taxes we pay over the course of the year.
We plow all retained earnings (which we paid all those taxes on) back into the company in order to stay out of the bank. We paid off our line of credit around three years ago and operate completely out of internal cash flow. Given how the credit markets have tightened up, I’m glad we don’t owe the bank anything and, as long as we don’t try to grow too much or too fast, we should be able to continue to operate without tapping the line. However, any increase in the corporate tax rate may prevent our being able to continue to operate this way and then having to rely on a line of credit for inventory flows, thus increasing costs.
I’ve got a degree in finance, but a lot of this stuff is just over my head, so I’m glad we have an accountant that takes care of all the calculations for all of this stuff. I have a hard enough time just doing our personal taxes. If I had to try to understand all the ins and outs of corporate taxes I’d either cry or have a nervous breakdown.
I hope I’ve explained this well enough. If not, I’ll have to consult the accountant. :)
Zuzu's Petals
@Church Lady:

However, I seem to be missing the part where you answered my question. That is, how does Obama propose to increase your corporate tax rate, as you have claimed?

NBC was absolutely devastating for McCain/Palin this AM. They covered the new polls, the RNC spending on Palin’s wardrobe, how she’s a bigger drag on the ticket than Bush, and how voters in Western PA are warming up to Obama. Crushed.

And more, what is wrong with increasing that corporate income tax rate a bit? The rest of us are expected to hunker down and make do in order to settle the country’s debts, so why not the corporations? This is a point Dean Baker has made repeatedly: corporate status has value. Businesses are free to decide not to pay corporate taxes by organizing as partnerships.

Also pulled from the other thread:
@Church Lady:
I hope your business isn’t in economics consulting…
While you remit payroll taxes, that doesn’t mean the actual burden falls on you and your business. It depends on the relevant elasticities (here, of supply and demand for labor).
For the labor market in general, most economists agree that the way the elasticities work out, the burden of payroll taxes (both the portion remitted by the employee, and that remitted by the employer) falls mostly on the employee.
Of course, this reasoning in general works both ways: one cannot necessarily claim that the burden of sales taxes falls 100% on consumers, for example.
Punchy
Purely anecdotal, and unfortunately, in a very, very Red state….so….the actual votes not really gunna matter….BUT: voted early yesterday, and the poll workers admitted to being STUNNED at the turnout. Just a massive, enormous voter turnout this election, at least so far.
I’ve always heard that the more people who vote, the better it becomes for Dems. If so, this could be a watershed election year. Just something to consider.
kommrade jakevich
The current spin is a beaut. Apparently there are too many important things to discuss to waste time on Palin’s wardrobe and they were going to be give the clothes to charity.
Yeah. Let’s stick to important things. Like the fact the economy has tanked, people are losing their jobs and homes left and right and your fucking Clinique lipstick wearing pitbull has called every person who doesn’t bend over so she can stick a moose antler up their ass an elitist caviar snorter who is out of touch with RealAmerica(TM), after you assholes took her family on 150K shopping spree for clothes no one intends to keep. (Guess we can’t expect Palin et famille to wear the same thing for more than one season, dear me no.)
So by all means, let’s stop shrieking "Terror and Treason!" and talk about important things you lying fuckers. I want to see your poll numbers slip so far they have to devise a new form of math to measure them.
NonyNony
That used to be the case, but it certainly didn’t turn out that way in ’04.
But I think this year turnout is going to help the Dems. Turnout is tied to enthusiasm, and McCain and the Republicans don’t have much of that. Obama and the Dems have the momentum.
(I’m still worried that shenanigans and racism will lead to Obama winning the popular vote by a wide margin but narrowly losing the Electoral College vote by near-miss losses in a few key states. The odds are very low of that happening, but still – that’s my fear.)
Stuck in the Funhouse
Just heard on MSNBC that Al Quaida has weighed in on the election and is firmly supporting John Mccain. Apparently, a Mccain presidency would allow the Jihad to "drain America" through continued dumbass wingnut policies. It will be interesting to see how the Mccainiacs spin this.
Rick Taylor
Oh that’s simple. It’s reverse psychology. They obviously want McCain to win so much, they’re willing to endorse him because they know that will hurt him.
Either that, or the right wing blogs will ignore him.
Rick Taylor
I’m beginning to wonder if they’ll be right-wing riots if Obama wins the election. Digby features a video showing a group right across from the polling station in North Carolina (where they have early voting) protesting Obama, shouting about his cocaine use and calling him a terrorist; I didn’t know you could do that.
kommrade jakevich
@Rick Taylor: Too complicated. Obama told his best pal/half-brother/lover Osama to endorse McPOWderKeg.

I think most states have a buffer zone of around 25 to 100 feet from polling stations, where no campaigning can occur. That’s really not very far when considering the rabid ravings of your average wingnut mob.
Comrade Darkness
@Rick Taylor: This cocaine use thing astounds me. Bush used it and refuses to admit it publicly. Given a choice, I’ll take the guy who’s honest. Thank you.
@kommrade jakevich: Did you see the Sept 11 picture of little Trigger or Willow whatever her name is. (honestly, I’m terrible with names, Palin’s 2nd grader.) Wish we unpatriotic liberals knew how to mark an occasion with the same panache as those Real Americans.
Brian J
@Jeff: I think he’s got a pretty decent chance of doing that. I define two-thirds as 360 Electoral votes or something around there, and if things go decently well for Obama, he’ll get there. Only if things go really, really well for him will he get to 404 or something around there.

That’s likely because their first thoughts would be half way self honest that if Obama had been caught spending that kind of money on clothes, they would have been like a school of starved Piranha in a feeding frenzy of outrage. As it is, it takes them a little time to fully rationalize their initial sense of hypocrisy and proceed to lie with forthrightness .

Wouldn’t Obama buying TV ads in Boston also cover some of southern Maine as well as southern NH? I’m in DC and we’re seeing some Obama ads, probably because DC stations reach into the swing countries of Virginia a little further outside the beltway.

Totally off-topic but can anyone tell me why the ads that run down the left side of the screen have shifted towards the center so that the blog entries are partially covered up? Am I the only one experiencing this? It started happening yesterday afternoon and it’s driving me nuts.

What gets me is the brazen shamelessness of it all.
The hypocrisy is to be expected, all politicians lie and swindle, we know that. They may start with noble intentions but the power and the ego will eventually take over.
However it is moderated to differing degrees by their moral compass. That is why I have high hopes for Obama, he may falter along the way, but it is obvious that he has a strong moral compass and that above all things will help America to regain its strength and pride.
However. The acceptance of blatent lies and fraudulant acts, the find the way to justify our sides actions and crucify the oppositions, the explaining away the hate and stupidity, the media bollocks, the lack of any ANY consequence and the plain simple cheating / hating / stupidity of the rethugs.
Its mind-boggling in its acceptance by so many.

That looks like Mom’s purse that she’s carrying. No 7- year- old would carry such a fuddy-duddy looking thing, even if it is a designer item.
On the other hand, I’ll bet she’ll be ticked at having to give all her fun new clothes back on November 5.

Did you forget Barack the Magic Negro rant from Limpdick bitches?

@Zuzu – I guess it’s because he has proposed raising the corporate rate. As far as his proposal to eliminate those "corporate loopholes" he talks about, as far as I know, there aren’t any that we benefit from, unless deducting actual operating expenses is some sort of "loophole" so that doesn’t factor into my feelings on the subject one way or the other.
@liberal – um, we remit the employee’s portion of payroll taxes, but we also pay our portion of payroll taxes as well. So yes, payroll taxes are in fact an expense that not only the employee bears, but that the employer bears as well, equally – he/she pays half and the business pays half.

@Church Lady:
Zuzu’s question:
"[H]ow does Obama propose to increase your corporate tax rate, as you have claimed?"
CL’s response:
"I guess it’s because he has proposed raising the corporate rate."
Are you serious?
I’ve already provided you a link showing that the Obama campaign says he will not be raising the corporate tax rate. I’m genuinely interested to know why you dispute that. Yet you refuse – or are unable – to back up your claim.
So for the FOURTH time:
Please explain exactly how Obama will raise your corporate tax rate.
