Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

#TeamBlacknessAlpha made another appearance on Current TV’s Viewpoint last night to discuss the community anger over the actions of the NYPD and the shooting death of 16-year-old Kimani Gray.

On today’s #TWiBRadio, it’s Pi Day! Also, we revisit the issue of the Michelle Williams “native american” comment and we continue our coverage of the aftermath of the Kimani Gray shooting.

And this morning on #amTWiB, #TheMorningCrew discussed Scott Prouty and his 47 per cent video, the injustice of military rape trials, and politics of confidence in success.

    Good shooting:

White cop shoots black male with bullets.

    Bad shooting:

Hired help shoots video of Mitt Romney saying how much he hates the poors.

A good shooting is when a cop believes her life is in danger, accordingly fires her gun in self defense, and the perp is ascertained to have indeed possessed a weapon.

@JWL: And sometimes cellphones count as weapons. And that case was a white guy working late at his own store, in a smallish city no less. Go figure.

@scav: No doubt about that. Cops make mistakes, because cops possess a survival instinct too.

This post reminds me of another story that the blogs seem to have ignored (Politico link):

U.S. weighs in favor of right to record police

The Justice Department is urging a court to affirm individuals’ rights to record police under the First Amendment, filing a statement of interest in support of a journalist suing over his arrest while photographing Maryland officers.

In the statement filed this week in a federal court in Maryland, the Justice Department argues that not only do individuals have a First Amendment right to record officers publicly doing their duties, they also have Fourth and 14th Amendment rights protecting them from having those recordings seized without a warrant or due process. The DOJ urges the court to uphold these rights and to reject a motion to dismiss from Montgomery Co. in Garcia v. Montgomery Co., a case that has implications for an increasing crop of litigation on the subject in the era of ubiquitous smartphones.

A good shooting is many AR-15’s firing simultaneously at suspected newspaper delivery girls.

Because a good cop will do anything, and anyone to get a rogue cop.

    ‘Natch…

There are no good shootings, never. On occasion a gun is fire in a way in which justification is proved. But even then the shooting is not good.

@scav: The ultimate absurdity is that a wallet could be a gun and get you shot upwards of 30 times with 20 or so bullets hitting you.

@Keith G: keep firm track of simultaneous tongue placement.

and huzzah for more shoes moving toward the edge! FL probe to focus next on campaign money

The investigation involved 57 arrest warrants and 54 search warrants issued in Florida and five other states: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Nevada and Pennsylvania. At least 49 people were arrested; several defendants were to make their first appearance Thursday in Seminole County Court.

Bondi said that when charges are formally filed next week, they will include racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering and possession of slot machines.

Records showed Allied Veterans paid at least $490,000 to Florida lobbyists between 2009 and 2012. International Internet Technologies, the software company that investigators said created the products used at the gambling centers, spent more than $1.2 million on Florida lobbyists during that same period. All of International Internet Technologies’ Florida lobbyists resigned Wednesday.

Florida campaign records also showed International Internet Technologies has poured in nearly $500,000 into campaign accounts since 2009, including more than $230,000 to the Republican Party of Florida and $60,000 to the Florida Democratic Party.

sorry, I’m giddy, I went long

@scav: While tongues can easily be “cheeked” here, four or five hundred million of our neighbors use terms like: “He/She must have been doing something wrong or she wouldn’t have been in the position.”

    Or

“Saved the tax payers some money. One less punk to throw in jail.”

Ah, if only the kid had had a gun – he could have protected himself… Oh, wait, having a gun is what got him killed.

This death shows the futility of carrying a gun for self-defense. Some plainclothes guys say “Police, hands up!” Muggers, or cops? Either way, they’ve probably got the drop on you. Plus, in Florida, they can say that they were “standing their ground” when they shot you.

I think cops believe that a good shooting is one that Internal Affairs says was justified.

Which means almost all of them.

@Keith G: Tongue placement is pretty much why I enjoy posting here rather than dealing with many dodgier meatspace neighbors. Droning conventional pieties in the usual terms is draining.
