I wonder if this might start an intercontinental war.

That was a well-struck volley by Neymar, off a bad clearance.
Looking like a long afternoon for El Tri.

Cool, something to do as the anesthetic fog lifts!

Going to watch this in ignorance when I get home. USA v. Honduras last night was not all I would have hoped for, except the ending.
Paula
You following the protests as well?

@Yatsuno: Yeah, it’s not just chippy, it’s nasty. Mexico is keeping it close, but they need to understand that playing shorthanded means doom, and all it takes is a quick red card. The second half should be intense, to say the least.
Haydnseek
@bill d: Not an aesthetic masterpiece, but sometimes you’ve just gotta grind it out to get the result.
Randinho
@Paula: I’ve got family in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Bahia. I can’t help but follow them :-)
Haydnseek
@raven: Hey Raven – Hope you’re doing okay.
raven
@Haydnseek: Yep, everything is great, thx.
Paula
@Randinho:
I know no one in Brazil, but reading about World Cup-as-boondoggle has been making me depressed since South Africa.
I get that nations that love soccer need their chance to host this thing as much as anyone else, but at what cost to those who are still developing their infrastructure?
Also, yeesh, El Tri. — not all that sympathetic Yank
OTOH, the Hex is a well-known suckitude.
Randinho
@Paula: FWIW, I think it’s great. The public has, for far too long settled for the status quo. Recently things got better for an extended period, but now things are worsening and the public is not satisfied.
One major difference between this and South Africa is that Brazil’s domestic league is still very prominent and arguably the best outside the major Euro powers. Be that as it may, the public is no longer happy with circuses and a little bread: now they want bread, circuses, education, honest government and opportunity. One hopes that all turns out well.
Paula
@Randinho:
Good point.
Amir Khalid
It looks like this will finish one-nil to Brazil. Unless Mexico can conjure a stroke of luck from somewhere.
MikeJ
@Amir Khalid: Nope.
Thlayli
That Neymar guy is pretty good.
Amir Khalid
@MikeJ:
They got the three points, but Big Phil’s not going to be happy with his boys’ lack-lustre performance..
Randinho
@Amir Khalid: Felipão may save Brazil from Jogobonitoitis. He received a lot of crap in 2002 for his style of play (as well as not including Romario), but he had a balanced approach and he won.

@raven: Back to the empty hours.
Useless, unwanted, incapable.

Looks like the Mexican National team and their manager Jose Manuel de la Torre are in for a rather rowdy um…greeting next time they play at home at Estadio Azteca, if the team fails once again to score a goal at home.
Paula
Little Pea still totes adorbs. Was almost in tears after Gold Cup 2011 but I still COULD NOT HATE THIS KID.

@Thlayli: Good goal. Amazing flops. The only one I give him credit for is after being tackled, he rolled his back into the ankle of a player trying to jump over him. The one where he clutches his neck is highlight reel worthy considering he got hit in the shoulder.
