An organization whose name is synonymous with the “ex-gay” movement, Exodus International, will soon cease to be, after its president apologized for trying to convert gays and lesbians through prayer. The apology from Alan Chambers has been expected, after he reached out to Lisa Ling of Our America and asked for the chance to offer it formally, two years after he appeared on her show for the first time. But the announcement that Exodus was closing came as a surprise on Wednesday. The board of directors of Exodus says it plans to start a new ministry at the still-under-construction URL reducefear.org, and that local branches of Exodus could continue operating autonomously, but not under the name Exodus….

    Trio of other stories possibly of interest:

    An Italian court on Wednesday sentenced celebrated fashion house duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to one year and eight months in prison for avoiding taxes totalling 200 million euros ($268 million). They were also ordered by the court in Milan to pay a fine of 500,000 euros ($670,000) to Italy’s national tax agency.

    Although Dolce and Gabbana had originally been accused of tax evasion of around one billion euros, the court ruled that just 200 million euros of that sum was relevant.

    The National Security Agency may stop collecting American citizens phone records following the massive backlash the policy received.

    The admission came on Tuesday when NSA director General Keith Alexander testified in front of the House Intelligence Committee about the government’s surveillance policies.

    Alexander said that instead of ordering the respective phone companies to continuously hand over records of all domestic and international phone calls made by their customers, the NSA is now debating whether they should just wait to ask for those records when there is a specific reason of interest.  source

    In the New Orleans story, the five-year-old who died is identified by name. But the name of her 13-year old brother who killed her is withheld, presumably by NOPD — even though he is already identified by his relationship to the victim.

    The media shouldn’t have published the victim’s name. And arguably, the police shouldn’t have given it out in the first place. In this situation, it has rendered futile the policy of not releasing the identity of a juvenile suspect.

The move would be the most consequential climate policy step he could take and one likely to provoke legal challenges from Republicans and some industries.

    “To paraphrase Joe Biden, this is a big deal,” said Daniel F. Becker, director of the Safe Climate Campaign, an advocacy organization. “Nothing he can do will cut greenhouse gases more.”

    Republicans criticize Mr. Obama’s climate policy as government overreach that is holding back the economy. Some Democrats, including those hawkish about climate action, also worry that tough new standards on power plants could slow job growth and raise energy costs, particularly in places like the industrial Midwest that depend on cheap power from coal.

    That was what the NSA said on Tuesday. But this is what Mueller, head of the FBI, said yesterday….

    “…where you’re trying to prevent terrorist attacks, what you want is that information as to whether or not that number in Yemen is in contact with somebody in the United States almost instantaneously so you can prevent that attack,” he said. “You cannot wait three months, six months, a year to get that information, be able to collate it and put it together. Those are the concerns I have about an alternative way of handling this.”

    The same old fear mongering, with an absurd strawman scenario to flame the fear.

    Yes, and I was astounded to see the DG of the NSA apparently challenging that policy in the article linked in post #2, However, that allegation was made in a British paper, and I cannot find any other source that repeats it, so I think the article is just BS.

    Since Alexander testified that the phone surveillance had thwarted 50 terrorist plots it makes no sense that he would be arguing for its dismantlement.

If this really happens then all those people who think Obama should go away because he’s so “divisive” should be kissing his feet right now. It took Fear of a Black President for these yobs to get a clue that having Verizon and ATT give secretive .gov agencies all your infos might have been kind of … dumb? Insensitive? Ridiculous?

    I am very sorry for how many lives were ruined our antigay policies, and still are. But I still have to marvel at what’s happened with public attitudes in the last five or so years. Is there any precedent for this rapid of a change in public attitudes on a major social issue?
