I was rooting for a Bruins win so it would go to seven, but damn that was an epic finish to what I think was one of the best playoffs, from start to Stanley, that I remember in a long time. And remember, I’d sacrifice kin for another Pens Stanley Cup, but damned this as a good series.

YAY Blackhawks! great game and great series….
FUN TIMES IN CHICAGO — folks will be partying !
sb
My son had a long day at summer school and asked for the TV. I gave it to him and switched away from the game.
I’ll take a puck to the head, please?
David Koch
Thanks Obama!
John O
Pretty amazing how many BHawk fans are in the stands. Chicago teams travel well.
Tom Levenson
Feh. But the better team one, no doubt. Congrats to Chicago and their Maltese Falcons.

oh man, while I’m composing an explosive comment (I caught Paula Deen in a lie! By reading her deposition) and posted it at the bottom of the previous open thread, the game you all are commenting on concluded, and a new thread begun.
Damn.
Mr Stagger Lee
Any Boston fan care to rank this collapse in the history of Boston sports?
LT
That’s the truth. Suberb playoffs throughout, and truly epic finsih.

@Susan K of the tech support:
I’ve been wondering: do you think Paula Deen’s accent is that thick when she’s being deposed?
Oh, and while I was also rooting for a Bruins win to bring it to Game 7, that was a damn fine ending to the series as well. Not least because I only caught the last 5 minutes and it turned out to be all I needed to see.
LT
@Mr Stagger Lee: You can’t call it an epic collapse when they’re down 3-2 in a best-of-seven.
The Dangerman
Buckner was goalie? WTF?
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
Hey, the roster of 25 for the women’s Olympic team was announced this morning. Five current or former Gophers make the cut.
amk
obummer fixt it. issa to investigate.
Susan K of the tech support
@Xantar: I have no idea about her accent. My guess is it’s the same as ever.

It is remarkable that after their anemic start the Hawks ended up with six more shots on goal than Boston.
Old Dan and Little Ann
Eat shit, bruins.
AxelFoley
Don’t really follow hockey, but pulled for my Chicago team. Great win, Blackhawks. Dominated this season from jump, although they did have two tough series vs the Red Wings and Bruins.
LT
Scotty Bowman – 13 cups. Jesus.

Apparently, it’s not just presidential elections that Chicago can beat Boston in. #Blackhawks
Mr Stagger Lee
@LT: Listening to WEEI in Boston, it looks like the Patriot unbeaten season ending in a Super Bowl loss to the Giants still rankles them. Not to mention the Bucky (F-ckin) Dent game between the Yankees-Red Sox, or Bill Buckner in the World Series.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@AxelFoley: Yeah, I’m feeling a lot better about how my Wings exited the playoffs.
IL JimP
This was a great series that I think elevated the sport. The best part is my team won!
Go Hawks!! Stanley Cup Champs!!
Punchy
Gunna miss their victory parade by less than a week. Dammit. Oh well, the city will still be buzzing when I arrive…dayum what a game!
LT
@Mr Stagger Lee: Those will never stop hurting. Something to cheer.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@The Dangerman: Was the winning goal through the five hole?
gnomedad
Two cities, one cup.
Bobby Thomson
@Mr Stagger Lee: I believe that’s God Damn Bucky Dent, or GDBD for short.
EmanG
Always fun when they show the corner right outside the Cubby Bear (just across from Wrigley). Cause there’s no one on the street after dark on the south side. So fuck a Sox. But anyway, Yay Hawks! This might have been the playoff series that has finally sparked an interest in hockey…
Mornington Crescent
A lot of talk about Toews not finishing the previous game, and he ended up with a goal and an assist tonight.
burnspbesq
@Mr Stagger Lee:
I don’t know which is grammatically correct, “Bucknerian” or “Buckneresque.”
Tom Levenson
@Bobby Thomson: Nah. It’s F**king Bucky Dent. I was here in ’78, and that’s the way it was and is.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@Mornington Crescent: The fucker is still a NoDak who played for Hacksaw. I hope he gets run over by a bus.
Katie5
Hockey wives and kids on the ice right now. Hockey wives a bit Stepfordish. Kids are cute.
Mr Stagger Lee
@Bobby Thomson: I heard the F-bomb version from Denis Leary but I will take your word for it.
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
@EmanG:
Rest assured Gary Fucking Bettman and the shithead owners will find a way to fuck that up.

Can someone get Toews to change the spelling of his moniker? Brett Favre is asking.
Katie5
@Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS): This.

Bobby Orr and Derek Sanderson aren’t walking through that door.
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): Chill the fuck out, jeez.
Poopyman
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): How can they run on those short little legs?
At least -that- is a summer sport. None of this ice shit in June.
Mr Stagger Lee
@Tom Levenson: OK I will TAKE your word for it. :-)

Earlier today the city said there would be no “official” celebration parade, maybe a short “thank you” rally / thing in the Grant Park band shell.
I’ve been getting emails asking me to join in on some online petition to contact the park district to hold a rally in Soldier Field @ $5.00 to $10.00 per ticket and donate the money to a charity. Some said “the Boston marathon people”, others said “SCHOOLS!”.
Good idea, I think.
Whatever, I hope they don’t waste a bunch of money and police on a 3 hour parade all through downtown, like they did last time.
Traffic was EFFED UP all day.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS): There have been too many instances over the last few years of North Dakota players ending someone’s career with hits to the head or starting fights in the handshake line. They really are the goon squad of NCAA hockey (and their women’s team fills pretty much the same role) and I have no use for anyone that would play in that system.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@Poopyman: What makes you think I was talking about field hockey?
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
The one thing I remember from the 2010 Cup win in Chicago was the Stanley Cup showing up in the pride parade afterward, I think it was the first time an NHL player had been involved. That was a nice touch.
Poopyman
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): Eh. My bad. I actually thought you were talking about soccer. I shoulda known better.
Katie5
Wonder which village in Africa is getting all the Bruins’ Stanley Cup Winners’ shirts?
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): Do you have evidence of Toews doing that? If not, then STFU. Lots of athletes play where they get a scholarship. If you want to accuse someone of playing Hansen style, then do so, otherwise climb off your high horse.
Poopyman
@Katie5: All of them, Katie.

way off. i read somewhere when in boston area, dent used to do autograph shows and would sign as “Bucky F Dent” –

It’s a cliche, but it actually applies here: it’s a shame one of these teams had to lose.
Of course, it’s a bigger shame it had to be the Bruins, but still…
KXB
Amazing ending. To first tie, and then win it in less than a minute.

@Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS): Rest assured Gary Fucking Bettman and the shithead owners will find a way to fuck that up.
Seconded.

[‘Rask had a fine playoff run, so the Bruins have got nothing to complain about, really. They did lose to the #1 seed.’]
SmallAxe
Definitely Bucky F’ing Dent land for Boston fans. And it’s definitely BFD not weak tea GDBD, I lived it, used the google to prove it. Cheers Hawks fans it was a great series.
Msskwesq
This series was so great! Both teams played beautifully, but the best team won! I love my Blackhawks!
wmd
No one has pointed out that the short season means players were not as beat up for the playoffs. Think about all the checks where they didn’t get slammed into the boards because they were locked out.
I’m not saying the playoffs weren’t great. And the Hawks win tonight was fantastic.
gmann
Near the end of the second period a C & W band starts carrying in guitars and amps. . . I’m thinking, It’s “Fuzzy’s Sports Bar”. . . They’ll wait till it’s “game over”. . .
Thankfully they had TV’s on the patio smoking area. . . but without sound as the interior and outside speakers are all on same circuit. . . Found a (radio) station and backed the car up to patio. . . Nothing says Sports Bar like watching a game with a 7 second sound delay. . .
Great Hockey ! ! !
patroclus
I just got back from Wrigleyville which is going absolutely fucking berserk right now. Go Hawks! Two Stanley Cups in 4 years – thank God William Wirtz is gone and Rocky took over! Toews! Kane! Sharp! Crawford!
Punchy
@patroclus: Im so jealous that you got to party in Wrigleyville. Must have been cah-raazee. Those peeps know how to consume very large quanties of reduced aldehydes.

EISBÄRN!!!

Rank? All Boston losses are ranked the same: worse than anyone else’s loss ever. The way you know that’s true is that they cry more than anyone else.

@Nom de Plume:
What really sucks about this is that it diminishes the legitimately heartbreaking moments in the city’s sports teams’ histories…Like this moment.
I’m a firm believer that the greater a fan’s suffering, the greater the ecstasy when the team finally prevails. I can’t wait for the contact buzz I get when the Lions finally win a Super Bowl.
Batocchio
Astounding finish! Fantastic series.
Yatsuno
@Amir Khalid: A friend of mine who used to live in East Germany introduced me to Puhdys and Östrock. Plus the Berlin Eisbären are supposed to be quite good, though I don’t know their current record.
Plus this looks like fun.

@Susan K of the tech support: I saw the same thing when I read the depo (thread about the situation on a forum to which I belong). I figure plaintiff’s counsel can make much of that! This case should have gone away long ago, but I suspect defense counsel has client (control/unrealistic expectations) problems.
The prophet Nostradumbass
Anyone watched “Under the Dome”? So far, it looks pretty good to me.
Dexter's new approach
My lovely, perfect dog Lola had been battling cancer since the playoffs started. She fought so fucking hard to live normally but just exhausted all her resources (my neighbor thought she was a puppy of Lola at the end) and I had to let her go last week. It made the game hard as I looked to pet her aggressively with every goal and was reminded she is gone.
But a great season for my Hawks and a great Stanley Cup Final for all the fans.
Linnaeus
I think I’d cheer for the devil himself before I’d cheer for the Blackhawks. But they’re a damn fine team. Gotta respect that.

@Mr Stagger Lee: Probably about two levels below the Bartman’s game position in the history of Chicago sports.

How do you give up two goal in 17 seconds? I am not a hockey fan, but from what I have seen, I would have thought it impossible to score 2 goals in 17 seconds against an empty net.
ThresherK
I can’t say how much I love that hockey players shun the Stanley Cup during the playoffs. They don’t want to be in the same room, they don’t want to look at it. It’s treated like the longed-for, treasured object it is.
I hope my telling a hardcore B’s fan that I was rooting for them ever since game 7 of the Toronto series didn’t affect the outcome.
BGinCHI
@J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford: Could not agree more. So done with that ridiculous organization.
Badmoodman
Poor Boston. Let’s review the last week:
Former Celtic Ray Allen hits the decisive 3-pointer in the Heat’s NBA series clinching game #7.
Longtime Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers is headed to LA to coach the Clippers.
NE Patriots’ tight end Aaron Hernandez is enmeshed in a murder investigation.
The Bruins, leading 2-1 and on the verge of forcing a game #7, completely fall apart and allow two goals in the last 1:15 of the game, as the Blackhawks take the Cup on Boston ice.
Chicago Stronger; Boston Chokier.
BLACKHAWKS, BITCHES!!
Kristine
@Dexter’s new approach: Deepest sympathies–I lost my King this past March. Know how you feel.
MCA1
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): Dude, c’mon. You don’t have to like Toews, but the fact that he played for the Whioux and Hakstol (in his first couple seasons, at that, before his style became as clearly divergent from Dean Blais’s as it now appears to be) does not permanently taint him with the evil of NoDak.
The fact is, Toews is an exceptionally hard-working, dedicated player who takes his responsibilities seriously and has from the moment he showed up in the NHL. He’s never been associated with dirty or cheap play, or off the ice antics or feuds or bad behavior, but rather hard work and a willingness to do whatever his team needs at the moment. He can skate, but he can hit. He can pass and shoot, but he’s not averse to clogging up the crease despite not being huge. He is always back on defense, is a leader on special teams, and consistently makes everyone on the ice with him look like a better player. And he’s now captained two teams with significantly different personnel to Stanley Cup titles. At the age of 25. He’s this generation’s Steve Yzerman. So you can hate him all you want, but it makes you look petty and you might be better off just getting used to him and appreciating his play. He’s not Dave Hakstol.
MCA1
@MCA1: Sorry to double post, just wanted to note for Tissue Thin Psuedonym that I’m likely as big of a Gopher puck fan as he/she, or at least close. So I understand where you’re coming from, believe me.
