WTF-K?

Still better than Windows 8.1.
(Just kidding. I kind of like the new windows.)

Ha ha ha ha ha! That is VERY funny! I think they would be fun to hang out with.

WTF, Newsmax?
Since when did Newsmax call the mail their readers send “hate mail”?
Suzanne
That is so much less offensive than what I would have put on your screen.
Baud
@Suzanne:
You used to work for U.S. Airways, didn’t you?
Schlemizel
You have to hope that is all they did. You could be getting some verrrrrrry interesting emails in the next few weeks.
Walker
Is your Desktop Folder really that clean, or did they do that too?
dmsilev
@Walker: I was just wondering that. What sort of obsessive-compulsive manages to only have four icons on their desktop?
Baud
At least they didn’t find your porn.
[Looks at Richard Simmons wallpaper again]
Or maybe they did?

Just be thankful that it was a still and not a video.

It could be worse. You could be trapped in a cabin on a rainy weekend with…Richard Simmons.

@Baud: What’s hilarious about the Hank Aaron headline is that a few days ago it was about Aaron claiming racism against Obama. A fact a site like newsmax would dismiss as libtards playing the race card. I guess it’s hard to ignore death threats and blatant racism.
Though they do have the O’reilly headline saying voter id laws aren’t about race. So I guess they are trying to make up for having to tell the truth.

Sorry I’m in link-making-fail mode, but this is from a Raw Story article on a congresscritter from Fla telling an Arby’s employee why he (critter) opposes increasing the minimum wage. (Arby’s-person asked him to spend one day working at his min.-wage job.)
Why can’t we have more Betty Crackers and fewer of these posers? (ou bien “poseurs” si vous voulez) Stupid question. I earned money mowing lawns when I was 12, too… helped that I lived in an upper-middle-class neighb (where we barely scraped by) where all my neighbors had lawns. Helped that my highly educated parents could tutor me overtly and covertly to navigate a system that’s friendlier to people who look and sound like me in the first place.

I do not understand this country. Two days ago there were Overland Park quotes “The thought of something like that happening is terrifying. In the Midwest we think we’re safe from this type of thing. But I guess it doesn’t make any difference now.” It’s all Midwest normal gunfire so long as the shooting is not road-rage (too Californian), overtly targeted and blatantly in bad taste? But hey?! I have a genuine Richard Simmons phobia. Nothing against the guy, but he scares the holy hell out of me. So one time about 15 years ago I was covering BEA (the booksellers’ convention) for my paper at the Javits Center in NY, and I rounded a corner on the convention floor and collided with him. He’d just finished a demonstration and was wearing a tank top and semi-shorty shorts, and glistened with beads of sweat, and … I’ve never recovered, really.

And this Sewol ferry tragedy is just crushing. I don’t understand how they could have such a large loss of life on a ferry like that.

@? Martin: You’d be surprised how lax safety is in Korea. Though it may be a rather wealthy country now, it still has vestiges of it’s earlier days.
I’ve been to Jejudo twice, we flew from Seoul.
? Martin
@BillinGlendaleCA: And that’s really a shame. It’s a country that certainly can afford to get this right.
OTOH, look at the fucknuts in this country that are more than happy to see an equal number of school kids shot each year, just so they can jerk off to Guns and Ammo.
opiejeanne
@? Martin: I don’t understand ferry trips that long. I live near Seattle, and lived for 9 years in the SF area, so I guess that colors my idea of how they should be used. I look at that map and wonder why there isn’t a ferry from the mainland nearest the island.
? Martin
@opiejeanne: Ferries are very efficient. When traveling to a large enough place, the ability to bring vehicles is pretty important (for commerce as well). The large channel ferries can bring a few hundred cars plus a few hundred semis and several thousand passengers. You’d need half a dozen airplanes just for the passengers, and many dozens more for the cargo. And if you’re only going a few hours, it’s usually no slower than the flight once you consider embark/debark times. And failure modes for a ferry are usually better than failure modes for a plane.
But as Bill notes, a lot of that depends on safety and ship safety has a tendency to be a lot more lax than airplane safety.
opiejeanne
@? Martin: Yeah, I’m aware of the way they are used elsewhere; a friend’s daughter had a terrifying crossing from England to Spain, and I read a seriously good-natured account of a ferry going somewhere out of India on a really long ferry trip and the author described trying to sleep on the floor among all the people being sick, and the floor being wet.
What I didn’t explain clearly is that I personally just don’t think of ferries as sea-going vessels.
We’ve used the little bitty ferries and the really big ferries in Washington and elsewhere but the closest to open water we’ve been in was on a huge ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, which is to say, not really, even though there are places where you are a long way from shore. On the fast ferry on that route we were involved in a rescue attempt, all boats changing course to pick up two guys clinging to their little fishing dinghy. A smaller boat got there first, but there were three ferries of various sizes, all sorts of sailboats, and a Coast Guard boat, The smallest ferry got there first. The water was about 45 degrees so it was a serious issue.

@? Martin:
@opiejeanne: I’m a bit surprised that they’d have a ferry from Inchon(right outside of Seoul) to Jejudo(do means island in Korean). I knew there were ferries between Busan, in the south, to Jejudo. I would think that would be a more efficient means of transportation going that far; train from Seoul to Busan, then ferry to Jejudo.
I’ve been on the ferries in WA, since I went to grad school at the U. They do run a ferry from Seattle to Victora, which I’ve taken twice, that’s a pretty long trip.

Efficiency isn’t everything to all people at all times. Some might prefer to take the ferry all the way as, once on, there are no further decisions or transfers to be made (rather like the routing options that avoid interstates or left turns). If time isn’t a constraining factor, why not? There can be other motivations for taking ferries as well. One main reason people take ferries in Sweden is because once they hit international waters (however defined), it’s duty free. Massive sprees. I was on one from to Copenhagen which is a relatively short hop and some of their head of steam had been worked up in Copenhagen. I hear people take the Stockholm to Helsinki ferry (pretty sure it’s the overnight one) don’t get off the boat and sail back. Floating party. Sealink to Larne was just freaking massive, nothing exotic, just a little Irish couple whiling the night away telling us about the troubles. None of these whatsoever like the nice cozy WA ferries. Hard to judge scale (I was a kid for the Larne one) but I think several WA ferries could have fit into it.

@scav: yes. It is the gun culture. Kay is much better at making this point than I will be. But note that when a gun kills someone, it’s just a different sort of death. Kids find a gun and shoot themselves accidentally? Well they’ve just somehow died and there’s not much that could have been done about it so no need to look into it too much. Someone shoots at your car and kills you? Well as long as they don’t mean it, then people just died somehow and there’s no need to worry about it. That trigger just was pulled by unknown person who isn’t responsible for the death. What can you do?
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: We take the ferry from Cedar Island to Okracoke and Hatteras. They are similar to the car ferries in the San Juan’s. It doesn’t really save much time to go that way but it’s a pretty run.
raven
@scav: Wild horses on Cedar Island.
MikeJ
@bago: Even when I give WMPNetwkSvc full permissions on a file it won’t show up. I’ve got my video dir set to give it permissions on any new file created in it. DLNA doesn’t see them. However, if I copy the file into one particular subdir that is working and then copy it back out, it then works.
Obviously something is getting set when it hits the magic dir, even though WMP already had permissions before that. My half assed idea to avoid getting to the root of the problem and just make it work was a powershell script that enumerated the permissions on a file in that directory and applied that set to a new file. Or heck, just compared a working file to a non-working file. I’m doing this because I’m too lazy to copy the file to a USB drive and move it 2.5 feet, so I haven’t really put tons of effort into figuring it out. It is neat to browse all the video files on my computer from the big screen in the den or the blu ray player in the bedroom.

It’s too bad he doesn’t have many shortcuts on his desktop. The thing we always used to do was to take a screenshot of a person’s desktop, then stash all of the desktop shortcuts in another location, then set the original screenshot as the desktop. Then when they click on what looks like their desktop shortcuts, nothing happens, and they think their computer is broken. It usually takes a non-techy person quite some time to figure out what is going on.

@scav: Depends on which ferry in Seattle you mean, because the ones to Victoria are BIG.
And I’ve been on the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead. It’s about the same size but more of a tub. Going over there were rough seas and a lot of seasick passengers. Coming back it was a lot less rocky, and we talked to a grandmother and her daughter and the granddaughter about the difference between American bacon and Irish bacon. They were from Belfast but couldn’t fly home because that volcano in Iceland, henceforth known as Bob, was acting up. They did not want to talk about The Troubles or anything else Irish, other than the desecration of bacon by boiling it.
opiejeanne
@raven: I love riding the ferries out of Seattle but we haven’t been on one in a couple of years. For ten years, every time we came up to visit our daughter we’d go to Whidbey at least once, and sometimes Bainbridge, because we were figuring out where we wanted to live when we retired. Whidbey was really getting our vote and we had narrowed it down to a place there and the house we live in now; what tipped the choice over to the mainland was a chance meeting with some people about our age who mentioned that medical care as you age is a good reason not to live on Whidbey.
The smallest ferry I’ve seen is in Oregon, the Canby ferry. I think it will hold 3 cars. It runs on an electrical line overhead.
