Got some shitty news so I did what I normally do, which is start cleaning (both my parents are now thinking we need to send him shitty news more often), because that way I am focused on something mindless and am moving.
At any rate, I offer you the greatest cleaning solution on the planet:
My entire house smells like geraniums after cleaning the kitchen and the bathrooms and everything else in sight. This is the greatest product on the planet. I also use the lavender dish soap and the honeysuckle hand soap.
I first bought this stuff because Rosie would always run to the kitchen to try to eat the orts when I cleaned the stove, but I was using windex and that shit would kill her, so I had to sort of spray with one hand, wipe with the other, all while kicking Rosie out of the kitchen with one leg and balancing on the other. I just switched to Mrs. Meyers, and I love the stuff. You will too.
Who doesn’t want their house smelling like geraniums?

Shitty news? Work related?
Omnes Omnibus
This is the product? Dude, you need more practice at product placement.
@Punchy: See the post below.

Seconded: I’ve used Mrs. Meyer’s products for a year or two now, and have never had a qualm. It’s probably not all THAT superior to “regular” cleaning products, but at least it leaves one’s house/kitchen smelling of something other than oversweet chemicals, or ghastly artificial “floral” scents. And yes, lavender is the best for ensuring happy pets…
Punchy
@Omnes Omnibus: ah…I see. That is some shitty news…
MomSense
I’m kind of addicted to the radish but I go through Meyers phases.

Windex to clean the stove? The interior of the stove?
The horror, the horror…
Chickamin Slam
Interesting that you mention that. I was at an air B & B and they had a selection of Mrs. Meyer’s products. It wasn’t bad. It did the dishes. As for the house smelling like geraniums? She is a retired gardener so the place had a floral presence already. Her husband does high end real estate transactions. They spend the rest of the year at their private island.
Omnes Omnibus
@MomSense: You clean with radishes? How interesting. I tend not to clean very often. Or let’s call it once a girlfriend. Or if my mom is coming to visit.

Geraniums killed my kung-fu master.
Omnes Omnibus
@Keith P: The bastards.
Mnemosyne
I use that on the cats’ litter boxes when they need a scrub — I think it’s the lavender.
@Omnes Omnibus:
Somewhere around here I have one of Nicole Hollander’s “Sylvia” cartoons where the multiple choice answers to “How Neat Are You?” are:
(a) My mother could visit at any time
(b) My mother and Nancy Reagan could visit at any time
(c) I would need 2 weeks to prepare for a visit from King Kong
Sadly for G, I have always been in the third category. At least I can cook.

By the way, a friend of mine had an aneurism at about that age and she also needed surgery but she was just fine afterwards. It certainly was a scary experience, though. They said later it was likely due to an old head injury she had had as a child.
So hopefully your friend will also be OK.
Jennifer
I’ve gotten to where I only use peroxide and vinegar to clean in the kitchen. It does the job, cheap, but it certainly doesn’t smell like geraniums.
John Revolta
Am I the only one who never heard of “orts” before?
sfinny
@John Revolta: Orts is often a crossword puzzle answer for various clues.
Linkmeister
@John Revolta: Nope.
RandomMonster
Use that stuff all the time. LOVE IT.

Oh, and I just remembered — there’s a town pumpkin festival every year where I live, and once Mrs. Meyer’s herself was there selling products. I kid you not (because my wife and I asked her), she is an honest to god real person, who makes a really fine product, and actually goes around marketing it!
Stella B.
I’m partial to the lavender. That bottle of all purpose cleaner will last most of a lifetime … at least the way I clean it will.
MazeDancer
The geranium scent is lovely. And people who normally react to fragrances do not have that negative chemical response.
Thymezone
You’re starting to sound like my grandmother.
Poopyman
@Thymezone: “Starting”? I thought you’ve been around here long enough to know by now.
We use the lavender and lemon verbena hand soaps as well as the lavender spray. Oddly enough (to me), I can get it locally at our DoItBest hardware store.

Am I the only person that hates the smell of geraniums?
MomSense
@Omnes Omnibus:
Well at least you clean for your mom!
@Mnemosyne:
I’m a b trapped with a bunch of boys and pets determined to make the house a c.

Getting in touch with your feminine side, Cole? Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
donnah
I used Dawn dish detergent for thirty years, until I noticed that my dishrags started to smell mildewy after just one use. It happened all of the time, so I switched to Mrs Meyers Lemon Verbena and now the dishrags don’t smell bad.
I use all of her cleaning products in the lemony scent and it smells really fresh, not like Pledge lemon furniture polish.
different-church-lady
There’s this other amazing product called a “door”. You should check it out, it’s fantastic.

Cooks illustrated likes Method, and so do I.

Geraniums? The geraniums that that I grew up around didn’t have much of a fragrance, but that which was present wasn’t anything worth paying for.
rikyrah
thanks for the tip.
RedKitten
@Joel: Ditto. We’re big Method fans in Casa Kitten. Their window cleaner smells like mint, not ammonia, and actually works better than Windex. We’ve finally got our cleaning arsenal down to the basics: Method window cleaner and multipurpose cleaner for windows and surfaces, Barkeeper’s Friend liquid for tubs, sinks and toilets, and Vim oxy-gel for floors. Vinegar for descaling the coffee maker, and mineral oil for polishing the fridge. It’s nice to have it pared down so well, instead of futzing around with products that may or may not work.
RoonieRoo
I had to google orts to figure out what on earth Rosie was eating.
Elizabelle
I love Mrs. Meyers’ lemon verbena.
Haven’t tried or sniffed the geranium or radish. Must do so. (Target?)
I like that cleaning products have such appealing fragrances now.
LittlePig
I like the new domestic John.
I’ve never tried the stuff, but I’ll give it a shot (‘tho maybe not the geranium. Lemon Verbena sounds like a winner).
I’ve been using Dr. Bronner’s Rose bar soap for a couple of months,the first bar soap I’ve used in 30 years. I can already see my hands are doing better.

Trader Joe’s carries it – fyi.

So I am supposed to clean my stove?
Thymezone
@Poopyman:
Well, come on. My grandmother, her many deficits nothwithstanding, never wrote me about the bowel habits of her pets. She was genteel. Said her whole rosary in Latin. She was class all the way.
