Just saw this woman perform live, and promptly bought every album she had. I don’t even care that the music has the slightest Jesus inflection. For this Jew boy, that’s saying something.
I describe her voice as “the moon through clouds.” Luminous, that’s the word….

@NotMax: Literally, treyf means “unclean, not fit for eating“… I grew up amid NYC Jews who used it jokingly as a verb loosely meaning “to spoil something that should be special, held apart from the coarseness of daily life”. Like “Don’t treyf the wedding, bringing up the happy couple’s former lovers!”

Not to knock on your teakettle, but traditionally refers to food which does not conform to kosher dietary rules. I grew up in the NYC area as well (and among family who copiously spoke in Yiddish and multiple other tongues) and never, ever heard it used in any other way, much less as a verb, by anyone, Jew or gentile.

More positive news from my state:
California has over 500 abortion providers – about ⅓ of all in the US. The state recently approved a broad expansion of access to abortions by permitting nurse practitioners and PAs to perform them after specific training. There’s 116 Planned Parenthood Health Centers in the state.
California’s teen birth/pregnancy rate has fallen more than any other state. There’s a lesson here.

Alistair Fraser and Natalie Hass (daughter of a friend of mine), playing Grand Etang/Hull’s Reel.
If you’ve noticed that a lot of Celtic tunes are short and recorded in medleys, it’s because they are dance tunes. For dancing they would be played eight times through with minor variations, but that would be too repetitious just for listening.
Ruckus
@? Martin:
There may be one of the great lessons here. But there are way too many people in the US that will be completely unable to understand it, grasp it, talk about it or even see that there is a point there at all.

Just got home, saw Mojo Stone and the Urban Renewal Project play a tiny venue in Long Beach. First time I’ve seen either of them. Mojo Stone is pretty awesome, the lead singer, Natalie Meadors, played a blues guitar and was just phenomenal. Urban Renewal Project was pretty good too, kind of a big band/swing thing going on

@NotMax: After playing ‘Don’t Fence Me In’, I spent some time playing snipits from ‘The West Wing’. Why couldn’t President Bartlett be real?
ETA: I didn’t think the singing of ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ was non-traditional but the video was definitely thought of by David Bryne. (I liked it.)

@NotMax:
Funny thing about this Dr. Bombay guy — his music was released by Warner Music’s Swedish outfit, his shtik was that he was from Calcutta, and all his videos were apparently shot on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

@Ruckus: Fuck em. There’s 40 million people in this big blue state that’s going to drag them forward to the 21st century. North Dakota might want to ban abortion, but there’s more people in a 10 mile radius of me than in the whole state of North Dakota. They’re going to lose.

Back in the day, I lived with a dozen other fellows. Several were in the arts. One of them brought up the idea of putting on a concert. Why not?, we innocents responded. The fellow sent out feelers. One feeler discovered that Jim Croce and Mimi Farina might be willing to do a concert together. Another feeler turned up a “promoter” who claimed to have all sorts of important contacts. He was a smooth talker and those of us who supposedly knew about that kind of stuff said go for it.
Well, on the one hand, he did have contacts and was able to get Croce and Farina to sign a contract to appear. The wanted several thousands (I forget the exact number) up front. The bunch of us who lived together, plus friends and relatives, got the funds. But, on the other hand, he was an egotistical bi-polar guy who was not trusted by any of the big ticket sellers. He also took out a year lease on an office and hired a secretary.
His contacts actually helped with advertising and such, though, the ads ,despite a major clause in Mimi Farina’s contract, made prominent mention of the fact she was Joan Baez’s sister.
Well, as you can imagine, things didn’t go well. Attendance was under 1000. In a 4000 seat venue. Mimi Farina acted professionally and did a good set but absolutely refused to talk to any of us. Jim Croce was much more laid back. He had already broken big and was selling out 10-15000 seat venues, but, he also performed professionally and hung out after and commiserated with us once he heard our story and was just an all around good guy. Authentic is an overused word, but, that is what he was.

@Arclite: long noodles are just dumpling + production line, leave it to the Chinese to innovate there, and their appeal is the fast blood-sugar pumping starch, but every child wonders this, children being famous for consuming nightcrawlers, presumably a better source of protein than noodles, actually.

It’s funny that this thread proves the true legacy of Snowden. Over 80% of the music links posted are https. That S means secure.

President Barack Obama has arrived in KL today on a state visit, postponed several months ago by the actions of the Republican party. He is only the second POTUS to visit Malaysia, the first being Lyndon Johnson. Will they name a village after Obama too?
raven
@Amir Khalid: He looked really beat in Korea at the presser yesterday. Maybe he was just reflecting the seriousness of events there.
PurpleGirl
@Amir Khalid: I think it would be nice if Malaysia named a village for President Obama.
JPL
@PurpleGirl: Congress would have to impeach him, if they did, because…

For company today, I plan on serving scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, bacon, marinated asparagus, fruit salad and bread. It’s going to be a late breakfast, brunch type of thing. Finch loves company because they bring their dog and they get to romp outside, which they are doing now.

@JPL: Right, the RWNJ would a way to spin it into a controversy. (As they do for every thing and any thing.)

5:15 am local time here in Belize, my body clock says 7:15, so I’m up.
I’m on my cottage porch 15 feet from the surf line watching the sun rise.
All is right with my world – today promises fun. Plus, since this very green cottage is essentially a very open screened in porch with an outdoor shower, no AC and lots of overhead fans, we get to re-embrace an exhibitionist side from younger days.

BTW – on a sad note, she has vetoed nighttime ocean sex, something about “did you not pay attention to the opening scene from ‘Jaws’?”

Next weekend we finally open up our cottage for the summer. The snow’s melted but the lake is still frozen. That’s my little piece of paradise and i can’t wait.

@Anne Laurie- Thanks for the tune. I’ve been spinning some Jim Croce in my head lately, while I’m doing spring yard cleanup. “Rapid Roy That Stock Car Boy” has worn a groove in my brain.

Nah, it’s a tiny 26 unit luxury resort. Turtle Inn, created and owned by Francis Ford Coppola. We just got here yesterday.
It’s great beyond my wildest dreams. Really comfortable sleep under the fans with the ocean sound right there, and I’m lightly tanning already through the screen while wife sleeps.

First of its kind fracking judgment for a family that suffered severe health problems as a result of the wells near their property. Jury award the family $2.9 million:
Link. Interesting story. Sounds like they’ve been through hell and will continue to have health problems. Case could set precedent.

For the music lovers, I’ve recently discovered the Coverville podcast. It’s a podcast of covers, I hope that’s obvious, and has an interesting mix of artists and follows a theme or particular artist. The second to last episode had a bunch of the Cure covers.

The only way this place could be even more decadently romantic would be if each cottage came with horses that you could ride along the surf line, at sunset, at a gallop.

It gives one a thrill to do that. There’s also a Japanese bath in the bathroom.
