I think Spain – South Korea will have a winner because it will be in the interest of both teams to go for it should the game still be a draw fiveteen minutes from time or so.
That means Sweden’s hopes rest on Brazil giving Costa Rica no more than a goalless draw. As I said yesterday nervous watching for Sverige.
@HinTN: I’m an hour ahead of the default time zone for this site, so I schedule the posts to post five minutes before the game starts. Noting that this game started at 7 EDT, I set the post to publish at 6:55. Oh well.

What the hell, I’ll root for Costa Rica. So deal with that Brazil.
My middle son just came home from work and asked me who I was rooting for. When I said Brazil he decided Costa Rica. My youngest is also rooting for Brazil and there is so much trash talk going on right now.

Well, I’m rooting against Brazil in BOTH games. Anybody watching the Copa America?
Falcao’s recent haircut has done anything to enhance his finishing skills.

@Randinho: Hey, nothing personal about Brazil, but I do live in Colombia. As far as the Women’s WC is concerned, I’d much rather see Costa Rica advance instead of Sweden. But as long as Spain – South Korea stays tied, it’s a moot point anyway.
11.
OnkelFritze
Not so moot anymore. South Korea has turned it around.
Futbol or futebol wise, Onkel Fritze, I have precious little invested with Brazil. I pull for Cruzeiro principally because most of my wife’s family pull for Atlético Mineiro, who have probably the most thoroughly idiotic and annoying fan base in the country: homphobic and deluded. Cruzeiro has won four Brazilian championships, two Copas Libertadores and four Brazilian Cups. They have never been relegated, one of five teams (Flamengo, Santos, São Paulo and Internacional are the others. Atlético has won one of each and has been relegated to the second division.
Yet the Atlético fans act as if Cruzeiro is the inferior team. I am also very tired of the constant victimization you hear about in the public. There are still people who believe Brazil sold out and lost the 1998 WC Final, without considering the possibility that France, which surrendered two goals the entire tournament, one on a pk and that Brazil arrived at the final, stumbling, gasping and wheezing, having given up seven goals going into the final. A little humilty and a return to some basics would go a long way here.
US will play Colombia, so “Lady” Andrade will get another swing at Abby Wambach.

@Randinho: Humility in Brazilian football? If not now, then when? After last year, that should come a lot easier.
Anyway, Colombia really needs a win after Sunday’s suckfest v. Venezuela.
Here in Colombia, my hometown team Deportivo Cali has just won the Championship, but they play it every HALF year which makes it difficult to take seriously. All the Colombian internationals play in Europe anyway.

@Randinho: LOL. They do have some weird names here. My wife has an uncle who actually is named ‘Lover’. No kidding.
It drives me crazy, too, because I believe that Brazil would benefit from a non-Brazilian coach. Pep Guardiola comes to mind .
Yet whenever I mention that to friends or family here the arrogance takes over. The fact is that Brazil produces great players, but the coaches are truly bad.
@Randinho: Seems to me as if Guardiola is the kind of coach who really needs to work with his players on a daily basis. Don’t know whether he even would want to coach a national team.
I have the impression that here in South America people are a lot more focused on indvidual players as opposed to the team effort (except Argentinia maybe). It’s the key to Pekerman’s great sucess here in Colombia that he has formed a team insulated from that kind of thinking.
The other problem with Brazil is that there are 180,000,000 coaches. I admired Felipão when he refused in 2002 to put Romário on the team for the WC. He took a lot of heat for it.
Guardiola is good at nurturing talent and that is desperately needed.

Valdivia
So how did my little Costa Rica do? Are we out?
24.
OnkelFritze
Yes, but you really need to have everybody pulling in the same direction, not just the head coach. After sucking really hard in the 2000 and 2004 Euros (and reaching the 2002 WC final with that team was basically a freak occurence), Germany instituted a completely new system where every pro team was obligated to run their own schools according to set standards. And all of that was closely coordinated with the national youth teams. The success of that we can see now.
If Brazil could do anything like that, they probably would win the next 10 WCs in a row.

@Valdivia: 0-1 and yes. South Korea won their game.

You’re computer odd in the wrong time zone???

So Sweden scrapes through. And if I understand this right, they will have the pleasure of playing Germany in the next round.

@OnkelFritze: It may be even crazier here in Brazil. My wife had classmates with names like Jesse James Souza and Shirley MacLaine da Silva.
