I loved it and just saw it again. Comparable to the first Iron Man, in my opinion. Stay through the entire credits. There are two post-credit scenes, one mid-way and another at the very end (the way Marvel used to do it).
And Michael Pena needs to provide background exposition for ALL movies, from ALL studios, form now on.

I had originally planned to skip it, but am having second thoughts since hearing the whole “superhero heist movie” plot. I love heist movies in just about any context (from The Sting to Ocean’s Eleven to Three Kings), and I’ve enjoyed every Marvel movie so far to some degree or other, so… maybe. (OTOH, I also kinda wanted to see the Minions movie and Inside Out, plus Mission Impossible and The Man From UNCLE in the next couple weeks, which would start to make a lot of spent $$$).

Off the top of my head (I haven’t drunk a cup of coffee in years):
— Do you drink your coffee down, rather than sipping it? The latter would help you finish each cup more slowly, and thus reduce your total consumption.

— Is it possible to put the coffee pot somewhere not quite as convenient as it is now?

The Guardian has an article about how Trump’s presidential run damages his brand value.
I think it kind of misses the point. Trump is 69, and he is rich, even if he exaggerates his finances. Why wouldn’t he blow 100 or 200 million on the biggest thrill of his life?

@rikyrah: The 1993 movie “Matinee” has John Goodman as a promoter.

Ideas:
1) Brew half caff – if you like bolting bunch of cups, then you can still do that that and not get as wired
2) Brew half a pot – or whatever you know is fine amount. Wait before making more.
3) Go with one really strong cup – like an Aeropress. Don’t make more. Or you can add hot water to dilute the one really strong into two less so.

As the Senate opens a two-month congressional review of the nuclear agreement with Iran on Thursday, opponents of the deal are spending tens of millions of dollars to rally the American public and U.S. lawmakers against it.The American Israel Public Affairs Committee(AIPAC), Citizens for a Nuclear Free Iran, United Against a Nuclear Iran and the Republican Jewish Coalition are among groups that will spend between $20 million and $40 million to blast the deal with TV commercials that began airing last Friday, social media ads and new websites that include alleged flaws in the agreement and contact information for members of Congress.

Figure out what’s an appropriate amount and then set that as your limit. If you brew at home, don’t brew more than your limit. If you get it at the coffee shop, know what size is right and stick with it. Don’t keep drinking it at work.
Honestly, though, I would recommend giving it up completely. Going cold turkey is the simplest route, though you’re likely to feel listless and get headaches for a few days while you detox. If that sounds too painful, try tapering off by drinking less, going to half caff, etc. My experience is that most of what caffeine does for regular consumers is stave off withdrawal symptoms. Once you completely detox, you’ll be at least as awake and alert as you were when you were consuming caffeine every day, and when you genuinely need a stimulant, one cup of coffee will have a powerful effect.

Probably plan is to try to damage the deal, and Democrats, as much as possible now, in hopes of GOPer President, maybe Walker, having enough public support to go to war later. It’s not what they understand, it’s about what they want the US public to not know or to misunderstand.

@schrodinger’s cat: You and me both but then I am English and a good cup of tea is the cure for everything. When my Dad died in the hospital in 1996 the first thing the head nurse did was make us “a nice pot of tea”. Plus tea is much better for you than coffee.
True story, as we were all nursing our cups of tea in the “grieving room” as they called it in the ICU unit of the hospital I said to my mum and sister “never mind, Dad will be home before we will and will have the kettle on for us”. We drove home, walked in, sat down in the living room and we all heard the distinct click of the electric kettle automatically shutting off when it had boiled, sure enough we walked in the kitchen and the kettle had boiled. Dad knew all we needed was a nice pot of tea.

I enjoyed the offbeat coming of age comedy Dope, but don’t know if it is still in the theaters. This film is also available on demand if you google it up.

@Litlebritdifrnt: Wow, what a cool story (about the tea kettle at home, I mean). I was visiting some friends out of town recently and went to a tea room run by a pair of Englishmen. It sort of made me want to get my own tea pot and start brewing. I’ll occasionally have a cup of chai, but I make it with bags. Do you have to use loose tea for a proper English cup of tea?
elmo
@Another Holocene Human:
In my admittedly limited-to-one-person experience, what actually “wakes me up” about having coffee isn’t the caffeine, because it starts to happen before that kind of systemic metabolic effect could really hit. It’s the psychological associations – the smell, the taste, the ritual.
So what I suggest is weaning yourself slowly off the caffeine overdose by bumping up the psychological triggers. Make your coffee with a dark roast. Dark roast has less caffeine because it’s been roasted out, but it tastes more “robust” so your mind will think “Wakey wakey!” Sip it slowly and savor it – don’t bolt. By the time you’re halfway through your first slowly-sipped cup of dark French or Italian roast, your mind will have had the “coffee experience” that you’re getting now out of two cups.

“..And as the New York Times explains, there is little Murdoch can do to wrangle editorial control over the network from Ailes: “As the creator of the highest-rated cable news channel in the country (even surpassing ESPN in total viewers on some nights) and one of the most profitable assets in Mr. Murdoch’s film and television company, 21st Century Fox, Mr. Ailes has been given the freedom to operate largely outside the purview of Mr. Murdoch.”
So Safia Tesfeye at Salon.com reports. I suspect the Times article is a not so subtle attempt to embarrass Murdoch into firing Ailes, probably inspired by the same brain trust at the Grey Lady that hired David Brooks.

@Betty Cracker: I have read and seen that British tea making involves higher temperatures than we use. We’ll pour hot water over a tea bag. Re caffeine, what I find annoying is the lack of decaf in pod form. We’ve gotten to the point that there’s a lot of good decaf in bean and canned coffee. But now every office and many other places have gone to Keurig pots, and it’s very rare to see a store with more than one decaf in pod form, especially a good one.ost stores have none at all.

@Randy P: @mtiffany:
Careful! Boiling water is for black tea, but other teas require a gentler approach. Green tea – 190 degrees. Oolong 180. White tea really shouldn’t go higher than 170.
And God yes, of course loose leaf and with enough room for the leaves to spread out and expand, so the little tiny balls aren’t ideal. I have an ingenious little contraption that has a filter in the bottom that releases the tea through it when it’s pressed upward, so you rest it on top of your cup and it dispenses the tea straight down.

I’ve been trying to figure out the right’s opposition to the Iran deal. I get that they’re generally opposed to diplomacy these days and a deal takes away the chance to launch another war, but… here’s what I don’t get: everyone but American hawks, Israel, and the Gulf States wanted a deal. Iran wanted a deal, every other permanent member of the Security Council wanted a deal, Germany (and the EU by extension) wanted a deal. I get why the Gulf States didn’t want a deal, more trade with Iran means lower oil prices in the west which hurts their bottom line – it also likely gives Iran a chance to be more of a regional power, but they already were that. And the American hawks can’t offer what would have been a better deal… I’ve even seen something about how the deal was so bad that we should have stood alone as opposed. so my question then becomes: what’s the ultimate end to not working with/respecting our allies and trading partners? Are you really suggesting effective withdrawal and isolation as the alternative? Because that seems like it would be very bad for the economy.
I suppose when we’re this close to the wingularity trying to figure out their internal logic is a fool’s game, but on the off chance that we actually end up with a Republican president in a year and a half, I’d think it’d be good to know what their thought process was beyond “bomb ’em to the stone age.”

@Gravenstone: My ears hear big band music in the air conditioner. They can’t be trusted. My liver has always been straight with me.

@JPL: I can’t edit.. but I meant unsweetened.

@JPL: Too late. The authorities have been contacted.

What this thread needs is a lively discussion on doily crocheting.

@Brachiator:
Oh, that explains why it sounds so lame. I couldn’t understand how he could produce something like what was described in the NYTimes review. Thanks.

@schrodinger’s cat:
I’ve had tea made for me in Russia, and by my Anglophilic colleague, and they do everything the perfect way, but I still hate it.

You have to watch them over and over and over, then you start understanding them.
Tree With Water
@JPL: The first time in my life I was ever hammered by a excruciatingly painful hangover was the morning after a night of drinking gin (which no doubt explains why I still recollect that party as a great one). My revulsion for all hard liquor was born that cruel morning, and I only drank it once in a blue moon thereafter. It probably saved my life. Because decades later I had a big enough fight on my hands weaning myself off beer drinking. I also had a close family member my age die from cirrhosis. My hangover from gin that morning was perhaps the most important blessing-in-disguise that I’ve ever enjoyed.

Whats that line from Postcards From The Edge.

@KG: Theyre probably afraid that once Iran gets back all those assests that have frozen; theyll just go on a buying spree on QVC.

Or, you know, just turn on the closed captions.

Also, since you have become a Simon Pegg fan, I must recommend Paul. The trailers when it was in the theater didn’t look very good, but I caught it later on HBO and was pleasantly surprised.

I saw Inside/Out because Peanut didn’t like it. After seeing it, I could understand how a seven year old would not like it. I enjoyed it. She loved Minions….and I thought it was entertaining.

They want war. The MIC must be fed.
Also, ISIS is nebulous. Iran is an actual country , which lends itself to a “conventional” enemy. Add into it -Israel wants it.

In Australia we discovered a new twist on coffee called a Long White. It consists of hot milk and coffee – rather less milk than in a Cafe au lait. We really got to like it.

@efgoldman: Happy birthday to her! Alas, nobody will be able to sing the birthday song to her nearly as well as she would sing it herself.
P.S. How was the choir reunion? We had a fine time at John’s 70th.

Dead thread, I’m sure, but I saw Ant Man last night and was really surprised at how much I liked it (for a Marvel movie). In fact, its now one of my favorites. It was cliche and formulaic, sure, but also surprisingly funny and with enough little twists and hooks to really grab me. If you liked other comic book movies, you’ll like Ant Man. It’s fun!
