States, energy companies and business groups are preparing to sue the Obama administration over its new climate rule, viewing it as their bet shot at stopping the regulations while President Obama is still in office.
“That is the most viable pathway by which the rule will be stopped during the Obama administration, because whatever the Congress does, he could veto,” said William Yeatman, a fellow at the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute.
Given the high stakes of the fight, the litigants are nearly certain to appeal the case all the way to the Supreme Court.
Larry Tribe, a Harvard University law professor who once mentored President Obama works for Peabody Energy Corp.
“Burning the Constitution of the United States, about which I care deeply, cannot be part of our national energy policy,” Tribe told the House earlier this year.

Reagan’s just the earliest I can remember. Your point is totally valid, but I do want to make the distinction that Reagan’s genius was to unite all the haters – asshole businessmen, anti-government crackpots, IGMFY upper middle class, chickenhawks, racists, misogynists, Christianists, and so on – into one cohesive Cleek’s Law. If you wanted to hurt someone, the Republican Party was your friend and liberals were your enemy. He did it by selling an all-encompassing abuser rationale of ‘we have to hurt them to help them’ that declared greed to be genius, racism to be over, selfishness to be maturity, and made all assholes of every stripe line up joyously behind the message that assholery was the real virtue!

If Hillary is capable of pulling off all these conspiracies without getting caught, despite all the suspicion and eyes surveilling her … well, doesn’t that imply she would be a pretty effective president?

@Frankensteinbeck:
Reagan’s appeal was the feeling America’s “golden age” was disappearing and it was all the fault of the women libbers, Civil Rights race-hustlers, and most of all big government.
If we hadn’t changed anything since 1950, crime would not have gone up in the 1970’s, the economy would’ve been better, no crappy small cars that could not run on regular (leaded) gasoline, etc.
He tapped into all that loathing of the way the world seemed to be to white Americans and rode it to victory. And directed it towards the idea that was sort of in people’s heads that if we’d not let all those people get uppity, everything would cool again.
And somehow the media seems fixated on selling on this idea of dystopian dispare from that era to today’s society, despite the fact we have the highest high school graduation rates in history, lowest teen pregnancy rates ever, and until this years increase in homicides, a steady generation long decline in crime rates.
The whole debate on Thursday was premised on the fact that we are only moments from the abyss and this was universally accepted as true.
Somehow I think some people just want to come unhinged when they think the wrong people in society are getting uppity.

I’m on-and-off watching, via Netflix, all the X-files episodes I missed when it was on the air (1st half of the first season and most of the last 4 seasons). So I’m all geared up for conspiracy theories.
Actually I was surprised to learn the cigarette-smoking man and the conspiracies started right off the bat. Though perhaps CSM’s role wasn’t defined yet. He’s just an unexplained presence walking silently through the halls of the FBI, or sitting in meetings. My memory of the show was that episodes were originally completely disconnected, and a longer story arc only started when Gillian Anderson had an extended absence due to pregnancy which had to be covered.
Depressing to realize how long ago that show was on. Being an old, the 90s still pretty much feels like current events to me. Every time I do the math or run into a high school kid born in the 21st century, I get a little depressed.

Good news: Bernie Kerik – yeah, THAT Bernie Kerik – has opinions that he’s willing to share with all of us, including on how Hitlery is getting away with…stuff…while the justice system was so mean to Gen. David Petraeus (ret.) and – not coincidentally – Mr. Kerik hizzownself.

A black man was elected (and reelected!) president. For a serious percentage of America, we are living, right now, in the nightmare dystopia they were warned about during desegregation. It goes way beyond just Obama – technology changes, gays becoming accepted, mixed race marriages everywhere they look – but he’s the obvious, inescapable, undeniable proof that this is not America in any way they understand, anymore.

The really quaint thing about that show that makes it pre-Reality-As-I-Experience-It is the fact that it’s all about government conspiracies. It trades in all the seventies imagery of intelligence agencies and secret polices and black military projects running amok and becoming a secret, unaccountable Government Within A Government. If I recall correctly, though, it doesn’t spend much time on corporate conspiracies or on the increasing corporate control of government (something an equivalent show today would never ignore), which for someone raised in the Second Gilded Age, makes it feel kind of like a throwback to an earlier age to me.

@Randy P: Approximately twice a year, I hire a cleaning service, and I feel exceedingly great about life. But I bought a new car at the beginning of the summer, and so I can’t spend extra money for a while. So I have been scrubbing my baseboards, just did the toilets, and will be getting a rug doctor next weekend. Fortunately, I like it pretty clean, and so it never devolves into total entropy.

@Mike E: Shelters will say anything to avoid the p-word, as in “pit bull” — the commonest euphemisms for mixes on PetFinder seem to be Boxer/Bulldog/Great Dane/Whippet, depending on how mastiff-v-sighthound the dog looks. If your daughter will be taking her new friend into a rental, she would be advised to do the same thing, frankly, because landlords are understandably gun-shy about breeds (& more explictly, breed-specific legislation).
Your (adorable!) puppy-adolescent is certainly mostly Lab, and Chow/Shar-Pei wouldn’t be a bad guess, from that picture. Although, if she keeps growing, you could probably claim Great Dane, too!

That’s one of the really OLD stories. California has been in surplus for several years. Between $5 and $11 billion this year depending on how you count things like paying down debt and the rainy day fund and catching up on pensions.

@Anne Laurie: Here in AZ, over 95% of small dogs at shelters are Chihuahua mixes of some type, and over 95% of large dogs are labeled as pit bull mixes. It’s really awful, because A) the vast majority of them would make great pets, as they’re likely not aggressive, due to being mixes (dog bites are not more common here than anywhere else), and B) “pit bull” is a catch-all term for a number of breeds, as you mentioned, and C) whether or not they are neutered/spayed, their temperament and how they have been treated are better determinants of their aggressiveness, anyway.
