Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

So many bastards, so little time.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Everybody saw this coming.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

About 10,000 people showed up today in the South Carolina capitol to “Stand With God” at a pro-family rally. It’s very sad. I’ve seen people I know post what I guess was the highlight of the day – Rick Perry’s speech where he said it was time to go to Washington and turn over the tables of the moneychangers. I was going to point out the irony of these words coming from the mouth of someone who became a multi-millionaire while working in government jobs, but really what’s the use?

@rickstersherpa: There was a movie, that brought some attention to it.

Dozens of Rosewood survivors fled on the midnight train to Gainesville. Their descendants still live in Gainesville, FL today.

On a somewhat (?) lighter note, there’s a marker dedicated to Josiah Walls in Gainesville, on W University Ave near the DA’s office.

I had never heard of Rosewood. What a terrible tragedy! And it sounds like what could have happened in To Kill a Mockingbird. A frightened woman accusing a black man of raping her, when in fact it was her lover who did it while her husband was away at work.

The results were horrible: the town of Rosewood was attacked by white men from surrounding areas, burned to the ground. The community fled, never to return.

Wouldn’t it be great to say we’re glad this sort of thing could never happen now? That race relations had improved by leaps and bounds?

    Not so much.

I comment over at the Atlantic a lot, but lately any article discussing Trump gets flooded with open racists. They really love that guy in a way that I never saw with other candidates. It’s kind of amusing how nuts these people are, but OTOH the fact that it encourages evil people like Dylan Roof makes it not so funny.

It’s also a sad commentary that the Republican party is still getting worse and more racist.

If you drive out to Levy and Gilchrist counties, the whiteness is kind of spooky. Especially at parks like Rum Island (it’s a crik, I mean river) and so on.

I spent a decade teaching high school in Levy County, where Rosewood happened, as the resident Yankee. And oh my, trying to get kids to do a role play that required at least some to play the role of Union soldiers? Forget it.
My pitching coach, when I coached JV baseball and I said they had MLK day off from practice: ‘we don’t recognize that day around here. It’s Robert E Lee day.’
And so many kids loved to wear, and still wear, their shirts with that flag on it. And we opened faculty meetings with Christian prayer.
    A whole different world.
And Rosewood? Most kids didn’t know about it :(

Levy County was named for a Jew (the guy who created the railroad that moved pencil wood from Cedar Key to the Atlantic coast). I find it ironic, as it’s an area as ignorant on religion as it is on race. Even in Alachua County, even though there is a vibrant Jewish community, you encounter so many natives who are soooooooo ignorant about Judaism.

My 13 year-old feline has started peeing in my bed! It has happened several times in the past few months – once when I was out of town, but a roommate was looking in on her, and since then on random days while I am out at work. Her litter box is clean, so it’s not that. Any ideas what’s going on from the collective cat-minded mind?

@RedDirtGirl: If you get rid of the smell and it still happens it could be a bladder infection. Easy enough to diagnose and clear up but need the vet to give you meds. It’s relatively inexpensive. Our dog had one recently and she was uncharacteristically peeing on the carpet. That stopped almost immediately after she started taking meds. (Usually take them for 10-14 days)

    August 29, 2015 at 4:44 pm

@RedDirtGirl: I concur with the bladder infection, especially if you get rid of the smell and it still happens. It can also be a behavior thing. My brother’s cat peed in Bixby’s toy bag on our visit because he was annoyed with the dog.

I gave me little Missy a towel on the floor to pee on if her reoccurring bladder infection came back or if she was mad at me. Don’t ask me how we came to that agreement, but we did and I was grateful, because much easier to clean a towel than a carpet. And much easier to get her meds if it was an infection – there is often blood spots with a UTI.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was in a Fort Worth courtroom on Thursday for the initial hearing in his financial fraud case, pleading not guilty to three felony charges related to claims that he misled investors in business dealings before he took office.

After attorney Joe Kendall told state District Judge George Gallagher that he was stepping down from Paxton’s defense team, Paxton told Gallagher he didn’t currently have a lead defense lawyer.

“People in this country are smart,” he told listeners at the National Federation of Republican Assemblies’ 2015 conference in Nashville on Saturday.

“We’re tired of being the patsies for everyone,” Trump said.

“There is a big, big, growing-by-leaps-and-bounds silent majority out there. Trump argued he is surging in national polls because he represents the Tea Party supporters ignored by Democrats and betrayed by Republicans.

“I love the Tea Party,” Trump said. “You people have not been treated fairly. These are people who work hard and love their country, and then get beat up by the media. It’s disgusting.”

“You don’t know how big you are,” he told listeners. “The Tea Party has tremendous power. It’s Democrats, it is evangelicals, it is everybody.”

The top obvious asshole is the guy who shot the cop in cold blooded of. Evil. Second is he DA, talking about a silent majority…nice dog whistle. Third is the recently appointed Republican sheriff – “selected” to replace the elected Dem who resigned to run for mayor of Houston. With no evidence reported/in and the suspect just arrested, he’s already blaming this murder on BLM, basically telling critics of police violence to shut up because it will result in dead cops. I originally chalked it up to emotion until I read that he quickly replaced his predecessor’s diverse staff with white dudes and got rid off the office’s LGBT laision unit. Dick.

You know there is a percentage of people who are going to go out of their way to make this as painful as possible. 10-20 years ago there was a movement to remove “Squaw” from every spot in Minnesota because it means ‘cunt’ in many native languages. My niece’s husband took great joy in using the word every chance he got, he went out of his way to use it because it was offensive. Having been to Grand Forks for hockey games last winter I can tell you there are a LOT of those types there.

So here’s Part II of the Shit My Spawn Says for the day:
    (Remember, Spawn is 11.)

Scene: in the car, flipping through radio stations, and Limp Bizkit’s song “Break Stuff” comes on the radio. I haven’t heard it in a few years, so I’m listening.

Spawn: “This is a good song to listen to if you’re angry and want to blow off steam. Like that ‘I Hate My Life’ song you like.”
Me: “Yeah, I like that silly song when I’m in a bad mood.”
:::I turn on ‘I Hate My Life’. Lead singer sings, ‘I hate how my wife/Is always up my ass/She always wants to buy brand new things/ But I don’t have the cash.’
Spawn sings back the line about the wife up the ass: “Yeah, that’s funny, usually it’s the other way around.”

I laughed so hard that I couldn’t breathe. My eleven-year-old is making buttfucking jokes. Holy balls. I really don’t know why I am surprised.

Don’t believe the hype. This storm is going to be some rain and wind, its not even a hurricane. There will be localized flooding in low lying areas.

Gov. Voldemort is looking for FEMA funds for the string of storms a few weeks back, but it wasn’t enough to justify federal funds, so he and the communities who were affected are trying to make a show so that the feds will acquiesce. They figure with the Katrina rememberences, they can cajole Craig Fugate, a former Florida Emergency Management head, to avoid a public shit flinging.

These fuckers won’t take federal dollars to help 800,000 working poor, but they will take it to subsidize vacation homes and poorly mitigated mobile homes. They disgust me, and I work with them daily.
