We’re going out for dinner with a friend to celebrate the anniversary of my wife’s entry into this cold cruel world.
I’ve just spend the last few hours learning how to correct for light leakage on old photos/negatives/slides that I’ve scanned.

And speaking of grandchildren, mine is with us this weekend. She no doubt will spend the day with Mawmaw making something (knitting/crocheting) and generally telling her Pawpaw to ‘go away’. Tomorrow we are going to the Festival of Nations up in STL for food, music, food, dance, food, art, food, crafts, and did I mention food?
Anyway, it’s a great time in my favorite STL city park. I will eat until I roll.

Sadly so. When you add the cloud cover. Fine for drinks and chat, not good for eating.
However, we are meeting friends for dinner, but I’m bouncing the idea off of Mr WereBear of arriving early enough to enjoy the deck first.

Still waiting for my instructional designer to get his act together so I can start writing my business analytics course. In the meantime I’m investigating the use of Cloud-based programming environments for use in online courses.
We usually go to the movies on Saturday but since there’s nothing interesting/new showing at our local, we’re checking out our AppleTV-supplied options. So far we’ve grabbed some of the 99 cent documentaries and got a couple of rom-coms that look fun.
We may also continue our ‘Veep’ binge-watch on HBO Now and make some headway on our Netflix queue.
No Hulu for us while The Daily Show and Nightly Show are on hiatus.
Also, since it’s Saturday, I’m making up a pot of my famous slow-cooker chili. Yum!

Supposed to rain here and it’s very gloomy out. I promised to take my friend out to lunch for his birthday last week, so I’m driving back to Chicago.
And I am positively befuddled about how I’m going to get the house all cleaned up by Monday for pictures to be taken for the high school exchange program. Yes, I shouldn’t go out to lunch, but this was rescheduled from last week when I had food poisoning, so I have to go.

Daughter and her roommates took in a street cat that was hanging around their porch. Two months later, kittens! She and one of the kitties have moved back home and we’re spending the weekend introducing kitty and the dog. Dog’s a happy old lab that just wants to play but kitty’s having none of that. We’re keeping her barricaded in the bathroom until we can get her fleas under control but she’s happy as can be jumping in and out of the tub, planning sneak attacks on the evil shower curtain and climbing to the top in victory. I’d forgotten how much energy young animals can have.

I just looked at the weather forecast, and on Thursday, when I have to spend an hour and a half in an un-air-conditioned field house talking to freshmen, it’s going to be 95. The field house is sweltering when it’s in the 70s, so this is not going to be fun.

@OzarkHillbilly: I think that it needs to be pointed out how wonderful an event the St Louis Festival of Nations is.
Music and dancing from groups–mostly local groups–performing music of Tibet, Japan, the Philippines, Scotland, Columbia, Congo, Africa / African American, Polynesia, Mexico, South Indian, China, Mexico, and dance groups described as “Middle Eastern,” “African,” and “Latin Hispanic.” And that’s just Saturday. And that’s just one stage.
Then add in a row of food stands–at least a quarter mile long (well, that’s what it seems like; over 40 booths)–featuring every kind of food imaginable: Afghan, Afghan, American Indian, Argentine, Belizean, Bhutanese, Bosnian, Brazilian, Bulgarian, Burmese. Thats just the first two letters of the alphabet.
It’s a wonderful event. http://www.festivalofnationsstl.org

@danielx: Friends in Florida needed a tree in the front yard cut down. The lawn mower said he could to it for $200, N got a price from a licensed bonded tree puller of $350. For some reason the normally cheap N went with the licensed bonded tree puller. Good thing he did, as the guy is cutting the tree down in sections, the trunk starts shifting and then suddenly there’s an ‘explosion’ and water starts gushing up like a fountain. The water main for the cul de sac went through their front yard and was under the tree. The thing about hiring the licensed bonded tree puller is that he knows the guys from the Water District and can call them on a Sunday afternoon to come and fix the water main break.

Gorgeous morning here in Boston – last weekend of what I consider to be summer. September 1 should really be New Year’s Day, because when you live in a college town, the cycle of life begins with the great inmigration known as move in day. I have just been diagnosed with achilles tendinitis, so on the agenda today is new sneakers, ice packs and a handful of ibuprofen. If I can get some new reading glasses made today I will consider the day a roaring success.

@La Caterina: where are you? What kind of public transportation? If you’re on the waterfront right downtown, James Hook Lobster which sells to the local restaurants has a retail take out spot you can sit outside at, or walk over the Fort Point Channel to The Barking Crab which gives you a fantastic view of the city. The entire waterfront is now the Harborwalk and the local subway system is available at either South Station or State Street. Lots of options.

the Conster
@La Caterina: South Station is the public transportation hub, and it’s on the corner of Summer and Atlantic. Can’t miss it, and inside there are information counters. Another option is to get one of those trolley tours that take you around, and you can get on and off and on again for the price of a ticket. They’re everywhere downtown all the time, so it’s convenient. If you can walk, though, from where you are, walk the Harborwalk along the length of Atlantic Street, or walk the Rose Kennedy Greenway and then the Harborwalk back. It’s all right close to you, and all along the way there are outdoor cafes and lots of places to sit and enjoy the views and the people watching. I don’t know what kind of transportation can get you from the Black Falcon terminal to the mainland though – maybe there’s a shuttle.

We have a busy day ahead, schlepping both Spawns to two different birthday parties, then going to our friends’ house this evening for D&D. (Wow, I’m nerdy.)
Speaking of nerdy, I overheard Spawn the Elder on the phone with her friend this morning, and she said, “I classify myself as human-ish.”
I guess that there was no way that my kid would not be a precocious nerd, but it was definitely thrown into sharp relief this morning.

A message from the unindicted war criminal Dick and his daughter Liz
In 1983, as the U.S. confronted the threat posed by the Soviet Union, President Ronald Reagan explained America’s unique responsibility. “It is up to us in our time,” he said, “to choose, and choose wisely, between the hard but necessary task of preserving peace and freedom, and the temptation to ignore our duty and blindly hope for the best while the enemies of freedom grow stronger day by day.” It was up to us then—as it is now—because we are the exceptional nation. America has guaranteed freedom, security and peace for a larger share of humanity than any other nation in all of history. There is no other like us. There never has been.

@Amir Khalid: Jeb has a fundraising consultant named Kris Money?
Another Holocene Human
@Gimlet: Interesting. In the context of the Cold War, the expansion of the middle class, even the broad expansion of civil rights legislation, this statement had some real validity. Europe fell to fascism, then Communism, East Asia had a violent imperialism and an ugly Communist revolution followed by an uglier Communist rule, and what was going on in India and Africa was meh-irrelevant as always to an American audience. (If anyone cared about Latin America it was a time of rightist dictators a-plenty. Somebody must have cared because Latin America political systems was part of our 70s vintage elementary school curriculum, no lie.) The fact that the US put the dictators in Iran and elsewhere was totes not relevant.
My point is that the next gen of rock-ribbed conservatives think “America is exceptional” is less a statement of where the biggest economies found themselves after the dust settled from WWII and more an unchanging article of faith. And while the bragging about democracy was more cons taking credit for what those looney libs had done, it’s now tribalistic nonsense in the face of a world that is much more democratic and politically transparent than it’s ever been, while the US’ financial system has gotten progressively more corrupt and opaque, the US is suppressing the vote, and the US’ conservatives can’t stop fapping over a guy, Vladimir Putin, who has constantly exerted himself in breaking down and suppressing democracy in Russia.

It’s already hard to believe Jeb thinks appearing on Colbert is a good idea– as polite as Colbert might want to be, I’ll be surprised if he can make it through an interview with Bush without taking a piece out of Jeb!. And this stunt is all but begging for some brutal smart-assery

@Another Holocene Human: Using cold water was good and the detergent and stain remover also were good. From my experience it might work. Not that I’ve had ink stained shirts but I had one lilac t-shirt that was hand-washed with something blue (what was I thinking?) and there was some blue dye transfer. Luckily when I next washed it in a machine with other light colors in cold water, the blue came out.
Please let us know how it turns out.

I think I’m going to have to stop visiting this blog until somebody does something about the slow loading. I don’t see any signs that anyone cares? It’s become virtually impossible to read and contribute comments. The semester’s starting and I don’t have time for this. I hate to miss all the Trump-Palin excitement, but I guess I’ll have to. I keep seeing MikeJ offer specific suggestions, but no one ever seems to see his comments.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: A neighbor came by this morning to discuss a local zoning issue. Anyway long story short, she works from home for an international travel company.
The discussion turned to the number of complaints she’s hearing about Trump and what is happening in our country from employees in other countries. Someone in Argentina expressed whether or not, it was safe for a foreigners to visit. If the Republicans were so concerned about our image abroad, they would tamp it down, rather than dig a bigger hole.
PurpleGirl
@Debbie: I don’t dry things on high heat, I use the lowest cool setting. It takes more time but doesn’t damage the fabric. I have one neighbor who thinks I’m crazy for not doing everything on high heat or in hot water. But then I have clothes that last me years.

@Mustang Bobby: Blowing pretty fierce for around here right now. We’re supposed to get about 3 to 4 inches rain in the next three days which is more rain than we’ve had all summer. At least the interior should get about an inch of rain which should help with the fires. Our neighbor Washington is fighting the biggest fire in their history and it has burned to less than 3 miles from the border. We’ve already sent firefighters and now we’re sending water bombers to contain the northern perimeter.
Redshift
@PurpleGirl: Apparently with modern detergents, it’s almost never necessary to wash anything in warm or hot water. We just continue to do it because it used to make a difference, and we all learned to do it that way.

@PurpleGirl: The stain did not really come out of the first garment (although to be clear, a lot of the ink did come out, it just isn’t visibly reduced). But no transfer I can see on other garments. Will have to try again later.

@Another Holocene Human
You’ve already washed and dried so may not work as well, but soak the ink-stained areas with milk* and blot or gently rub.
Works wonders on ink. One friend used to repair printers and copiers for a,living and once had introduced him to that method he later said he’d ditched using commercial products to clean ink on rollers and parts and switched entirely to using milk and Q-tips.

Bwahahah! Is there any point to statements like this, other than to give people like RtR things to pretend to believe? Or is it just that to be a good BS artist, you have to be able to believe your own lies?
Another Holocene Human
@Redshift: I have to buy fragrance free detergents, and they don’t wash out–sometimes don’t even dissolve–in very cold water. (I live in Florida so our cold isn’t always all that cold.)
Hot water (and hot dryer) is also recommended for killing dust mites. I feel that hot water helps with the bacteria that cause odors as well. My dust mite poo allergy is pretty debilitating.
Another Holocene Human
@NotMax: Huh. Milk itself creates protein stains which can be a b*tch to remove, especially if they set.
PurpleGirl
@Redshift: From some of my craft work with fabrics I’ve learned how to take better care so as to not damage the fabric. Hot water and high heat just weaken the threads so much. So I stopped doing what my mother taught me. What I noticed was the fabrics lasting longer and I didn’t see differences in the colors. So I go cold water and cool heat. When my complex had new washers and dryers put in, the company that maintains them also changed to lower settings. Many older folks didn’t like that the new machines weren’t as hot as before. (I shrugged.)

@PurpleGirl: Weird but true: Hairspray for ink stains. Spray it good, scrub with a toothbrush, blot it, repeat a lot if it’s a big stain. Try washing, don’t put it in the dryer until you’ve removed all the stain. Treat again if you need to.
