Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Be a wild strawberry.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

    But then, why Mississippi?

Okay, I watched Trump first…….does that make me a bad person?

As usual, Trump blames political correctness and claims there is no possible way to vet the refugees coming from Syria/Middle East.
Funny, we are doing it up here in Canada. Probably +30K and counting, but of course I guess we are either more efficient or are more reckless than the US.

    August 25, 2016 at 3:08 pm

@schrodinger’s cat: There was an extended period this cycle when NH was practically tied up, and one poll there in July that showed him way ahead. Clinton has had a solid lead in more recent polling, though–but if the race were to tighten up nationally again, NH would probably be one of the critical states close to the 270 threshold.

So it makes a little bit of sense to campaign there. Not as much as concentrating on Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida, which are absolute must-win for him. The campaign keeps saying they’re going to shift to concentrating on those states, but Trump doesn’t actually go and do it.

@schrodinger’s cat: Tamil food too seems to largely be lost, although there’s a sprinkling of really good places in the Bay Area and NYC, maybe elsewhere too. I think some of the earliest / biggest cohorts of immigration from the region were disproportionately Punjabi? (Unfortunately some of that may have to do with the nastiest bits of the Partition). That definitely strikes me as the style that is largely popularized as “Indian” (ironically given the issue of Punjab being on both sides of the border nowadays).

Almost the exact same thing happened with Chinese I suspect. I don’t know the ins and outs of Chinese food, but I can tell you, working in translation/interpretation that [variously spelled when romanized] Toishanese – not Mandarin or Cantonese – was the lingua franca in Chinese immigrant communities in the US and Canada for quite a few generations. That’s changing now, and “Chinese food’ has spun off in another direction as well. But still, funny things can happen when a small sample of immigrants are seen as a representative sample of a broad swathe of the old country.

I had the unfortunate experience of being somewhere where I was forced to watch a CNN panel discuss this speech right after.

The panel mostly hammered Drumpf for all the shit he has said and done so at least those boxes were checked. However, there was some blonde Fox News reject going on and on about Clinton foundation…blah blah…emails blah blah…she’s the real racist blah blah. Just complete utter bullshit.

I fucking hate watching news channels. Hate it. Cut the cord years ago and never looked back. Only watch selective clips now on sites like this and only if it’s not this sort of both sides do it false equivalency horseshit.

The speech was a great mix of hard-hitting language backed with hardcore proof. Reading the Breitbart headlines was really brilliant. Guess her speechwriters also read blogs.

2 weeks of coverage of the alt right movement will kill Trump dead, and the establishment GOP with it. Because public opinion of it will quickly turn sharply negative, and it will torpedo Trump’s slim chance of expanding his support. Plus, if he does abandon them, many of them will return the favor. Win-win for team blue.

@Corner Stone: No it wasn’t. Mark Pitcavage is their long time director of research. All the researchers at the regional offices technically work for him – though they have a lot of autonomy. He works from his home and among those who study domestic extremism its sort of a bit of true amusement that he never seems to leave home. This may not be completely true, but when I’ve dealt with the ADL (was interviewed for two positions back in 2005, which they actually didn’t have open – don’t ask) he did my initial interview by phone and went over all the details. Then I had an in person interview at the main office in NY and he wasn’t there. I don’t know if he’s agoraphobic or if there’s something else going on.

    gorram

    August 25, 2016 at 8:13 pm

@Miss Bianca: I am guessing it has something to do with sunlight!

Also, while there are more local variations of course, it’s usually thought of as one broader dialectical region, Ulster through Donegal and even down into Letrim and such. The border is only just now a century old (with the period before it being characterized by a lot of upheaval, and hence moving around across the spaces it now divides), and the past few decades have seen it move towards demilitarization and more free movement. As a result, there’s often a lot of shared characteristics to the region as a whole that reflect greater contact with Gaelg and Gàidhlig influences that wasn’t really present in the more common Irish dialects in the south (which are how people tend to present the language in general to people).

For example, while the people we’re talking about would perfectly understand and might very well say themselves what you did, “ní féidir liom gaeilge a labhairt” (I don’t think you need the first “a”?), especially in the Donegal area you’re more likely to hear “cha fhéidir liom gaeilge a labhairt” – there’s an alternative negation word (cha[n] in the present, char in the past) that triggers lenition (except for t- and d- for which it triggers eclipsis… it’s a weird regional dialect!). That’s pretty similar to a common way of negating in Gaelg and Gàidhlig I’ve heard said?

Anyhoo, while I’m by no means fluent, that is the variety I’ve been trying to learn, so if I can be of any help, let me know!

  255. 255.

    Miss Bianca

    August 25, 2016 at 8:21 pm

@gorram: See, now, I am all undone! And of course I would need help – thank you! For of course, what I would want is the Northern Irish dialect. I know there are some sources online – BBC, according to satby, had a nice interactive one that apparently isn’t so up on the “active” part anymore, alas.

My characters are split up between English and Irish speakers – we won’t even get into Lupa. That’s just another silliness all on its own.

As in the phone interview was fine. The in person interview was fine. But given that they didn’t have the openings they’d advertised, I’m not sure quite what the point was. I also had a job in hand, so it wasn’t that big a deal, but I was very interested in either of the two advertised, but not actually open to be filled, positions.

Personally, I think they were fishing to see who might be out there while at the same time covering their butts in case they just wanted to promote from within. It was what it was.
