Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Everybody saw this coming.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

The revolution will be supervised.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Story coming down the pike. Trump was hospitalized for nervous breakdown in 90s during bankruptcy period.

Newsweek breaking it tomorrow. Kurt Eichenwald on Twitter for more.

It’s not that this isn’t fantastic (it is!), but I’m pretty sure that the NYT Public Editor and many other journalists will just call the whole push for actual truth and balance in reporting as “partisan working the refs” rather than “pushing back against ludicrous and demonstrably biased coverage”.

The fact that the president did it makes it more visible, but simultaneously easier for the press to discount.

Just read a rumor that the President’s calendar for October is mostly clear. If true, there will be more of this. The media may try to ignore him, but he will be heard.

Definitely. But there are limits to what good that does them. Nobody thinks they’re doing a good job right now, so when they react as you say, it doesn’t mean people will believe it. They’ve had some leeway with Hillary Clinton who, for whatever reason, has had negative stories cling to her like they didn’t to Obama, or Bill (at the polls I mean). They’ll have a lot less of it with Obama.

You’re probably right, but I still think it’s a clear net positive for Obama to hammer the message home on HRC’s behalf. He can talk past the traditional media to a greater extent than anyone else, and along with Bernie he can hopefully move the needle a few points with younger voters. They’ll listen to, or at least hear, him saying these things regardless of whether the NYTimes thinks it’s in good taste.

You go and tell them Mr. President, for all the good it will do. I agree with everything he says here. Unfortunately, the people that need to hear it and heed it most will ignore the message because of the messenger.

Funny what 8 years of multiple daily stories de-legitimizing a sitting Democratic President will do to a certain percentage of the populace. Hopefully some of them can be reached.

@Matt McIrvin: When I first saw that tweet earlier, I called a friend and explained my queasiness about releasing mental health information because of Eagleton. The problem with Trump, imo trumps that because he is unstable today. If he were a normal candidate, who had an episode of depression, that would be different. He doesn’t appear to be disciplined enough to maintain a sense of stability.

    @Matt McIrvin:
While I’d normally be right there with you, in this case I’m not. Trump is an unstable individual, mental illness is not and should not be stigmatized, but there are some jobs that are simply not appropriate for a person with mental illness. It also depends on how the candidate has been treated and responded to that treatment. If a person suffered from depression or is bipolar and is on medication, that’s great for them, but I’m not sure that I would vote for them to for president. I would be glad that they were in a good place, but the responsibility of the presidency, and the level of stress is such that the person would have to demonstrate over the course of the year and a half campaign, that they are steady enough to withstand the strain without suffering a relapse. Mental health or addiction are not automatic disqualifiers, but they do require added scrutiny. IMHO. Donald is not stable, period.

Thank you for posting Obama’s stump speech for Hillary.

He is so positive in this speech. He has Clinton’s back. We all need to have Clinton’s back. His remarks about Trump were honest – not name calling, lying and nasty, which is how Trump’s hate-athons rallis are run.

As he heads into the home stretch of his second term – I am hearing more of da kine Island man he has hidden away. Hawaii is calling him back home.

    @Shell:
The problem so many democrats have always had with this president is they want him to be something he’s not and do and say things that have never been part of his public persona. What has worked for him these past 8-9 years on the national stage is his authenticity. His wife made the case that he is consistent and real. And I remember reading a piece in ’08 by a Bush Justice Department lawyer, Carol Platt Lebeau, who was on law review with Obama. She said that the guy running for Pres. is exactly who he is.

I had to search for Daveed — they put him under “Originals” and not with the rest of the men, though at least they provided plenty of pictures. They didn’t use my favorite one — it was the purple plaid suit he wore to the White House.

    (ETA: Found it!)

Did I mention that my friend got to meet Daveed and he was such a sweetheart that she now wants to steal him away to be her imaginary ex-husband? Don’t tell either of our real-life husbands, though.

Leslie Odom is a very stylish and classically dressed gentleman, but I guess I like mine a little more eccentric.
