Dog Dawg Damn
Story coming down the pike. Trump was hospitalized for nervous breakdown in 90s during bankruptcy period.
Newsweek breaking it tomorrow. Kurt Eichenwald on Twitter for more.
Mister Forkbeard
It’s not that this isn’t fantastic (it is!), but I’m pretty sure that the NYT Public Editor and many other journalists will just call the whole push for actual truth and balance in reporting as “partisan working the refs” rather than “pushing back against ludicrous and demonstrably biased coverage”.
The fact that the president did it makes it more visible, but simultaneously easier for the press to discount.
the Conster, la Citoyenne
Just read a rumor that the President’s calendar for October is mostly clear. If true, there will be more of this. The media may try to ignore him, but he will be heard.
the Conster, la Citoyenne
@Dog Dawg Damn:
Media: both sides.
Dog Dawg Damn
@Dog Dawg Damn: Wel damn. Story is about something else he says now. So put this in “people are saying” basket. Journalism is dead when parody and jokes are mixed in with truth and facts.
Mister Forkbeard
@Dog Dawg Damn: Kurt explicitly says that his story tomorrow is not about the nervous breakdown, “Story is about something else. But it’s good.”
Dog Dawg Damn
Yup just saw that. Not sure if he’s trolling or serious re: mental health claims.
Gin & Tonic
@Dog Dawg Damn: He says he wouldn’t scoop himself, and the story is about something else.
Gin & Tonic
Sorry, I’m slow.
gogol's wife
@Mister Forkbeard:
Well, I’m glad it’s not about something that happened to Trump in the 1990s. No one in the media will bother with that. He could have shot somebody on Fifth Avenue and they’d ignore it.
Matt McIrvin
@Dog Dawg Damn: Aw, geez, if people start citing the mental health story as a disqualifier I might actually have to come to Trump’s defense.
Chris
@Mister Forkbeard:
Perhaps. But POTUS is a lot more popular than the New York Times and, for that matter, than Hillary Clinton.
Mister Forkbeard
Kurt was probably trolling re: mental health. And I wouldn’t put a huge amount of faith in his claim that it’ll shake up the race – reporters push their own work all the time. :)
JPL
@Dog Dawg Damn: Nope.. He’s looking for more info.
I didn’t mean to pile on.. sorry..
When you listen to Trump, except for the times he appears to be on drugs, he swings wildly all over the place.
I do think if there is a story, it will come out.
Mister Forkbeard
@Chris: I don’t know. Lately they’ve been taking the line that “people unhappy with us PROVES we’re doing our job well!”. Which is just… breathtakingly stupid.
lollipopguild
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: I would like to see the media ignore the President. LOL!

The best thing about this ugly campaign season will be watching Obama go to town on Trump over and over again. He has a way of sticking in the shiv while telling a joke that is so much fun to watch.
Keith G
If you do one thing today or tomorrow, listen to the Keeping It 1600 podcast. These former Obama staffers discuss what a slow news week we have just been through.
Chris
@Mister Forkbeard:
Definitely. But there are limits to what good that does them. Nobody thinks they’re doing a good job right now, so when they react as you say, it doesn’t mean people will believe it. They’ve had some leeway with Hillary Clinton who, for whatever reason, has had negative stories cling to her like they didn’t to Obama, or Bill (at the polls I mean). They’ll have a lot less of it with Obama.
DemJayhawks
@Keith G: +1 for Keeping It 1600. Informative and entertaining.
Patricia Kayden
@Dog Dawg Damn: That is scary as hell. He already seems deranged so imagine if he has a nervous breakdown while in office. How would we know the difference? Looking forward to that story.
sigaba
@Matt McIrvin:
Eagleton.
Villago Delenda Est
@lollipopguild: They’ll do it. They hate the near sheriff nearly as much as David Duke does.
Turgidson
@Mister Forkbeard:
You’re probably right, but I still think it’s a clear net positive for Obama to hammer the message home on HRC’s behalf. He can talk past the traditional media to a greater extent than anyone else, and along with Bernie he can hopefully move the needle a few points with younger voters. They’ll listen to, or at least hear, him saying these things regardless of whether the NYTimes thinks it’s in good taste.
Trollhattan
Based on early feedback and the clip, this is going to be really good: Natalie Portman as Jackie.
Chris
@Turgidson:
There it is – “he can talk past the traditional media to a greater extent than anyone else.” Indeed he can. That’s what I was trying to get at.
singfoom
You go and tell them Mr. President, for all the good it will do. I agree with everything he says here. Unfortunately, the people that need to hear it and heed it most will ignore the message because of the messenger.
Funny what 8 years of multiple daily stories de-legitimizing a sitting Democratic President will do to a certain percentage of the populace. Hopefully some of them can be reached.
lollipopguild
@Villago Delenda Est: I would like to extend a Laurel and Hardy handshake to the Sheriff who is near.
Turgidson
@Mister Forkbeard:
Not sure Eichenwald has the cachet with the Villagers to actually drive coverage and alter the course of the election, but here’s to hoping. He’s expressed some righteous disgust with the coverage himself.
Patricia Kayden
@Mister Forkbeard:
That’s exactly the argument she’s making. She believes that calls for balance = partisanship. Amazing.
JPL
@Matt McIrvin: When I first saw that tweet earlier, I called a friend and explained my queasiness about releasing mental health information because of Eagleton. The problem with Trump, imo trumps that because he is unstable today. If he were a normal candidate, who had an episode of depression, that would be different. He doesn’t appear to be disciplined enough to maintain a sense of stability.
Mister Forkbeard
@Patricia Kayden: Yep. And now that Obama has said it, it’s definitely partisan and the criticism can be even more safely ignored.
JPL
@Patricia Kayden: When hired, she said that the NYTimes was to liberal. She was biased coming in.
Villago Delenda Est
@Patricia Kayden: Her name has been duly added to the tumbrel manifest.
hovercraft
@Matt McIrvin:
While I’d normally be right there with you, in this case I’m not. Trump is an unstable individual, mental illness is not and should not be stigmatized, but there are some jobs that are simply not appropriate for a person with mental illness. It also depends on how the candidate has been treated and responded to that treatment. If a person suffered from depression or is bipolar and is on medication, that’s great for them, but I’m not sure that I would vote for them to for president. I would be glad that they were in a good place, but the responsibility of the presidency, and the level of stress is such that the person would have to demonstrate over the course of the year and a half campaign, that they are steady enough to withstand the strain without suffering a relapse. Mental health or addiction are not automatic disqualifiers, but they do require added scrutiny. IMHO. Donald is not stable, period.
Villago Delenda Est
@hovercraft: Please, Teh Donald is not “unstable.” He’s “mercurial”. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Shell
But even when he’s supposedly gonna tell it like it is he so polite.˙He said “Do you mind if I vent?” The crowd roars. His next line “This campaign is being graded on a curve,” Hmmm, not exactly blistering. Would really like t o see him cut loose.
Barb2
Thank you for posting Obama’s stump speech for Hillary.
He is so positive in this speech. He has Clinton’s back. We all need to have Clinton’s back. His remarks about Trump were honest – not name calling, lying and nasty, which is how Trump’s hate-athons rallis are run.
As he heads into the home stretch of his second term – I am hearing more of da kine Island man he has hidden away. Hawaii is calling him back home.
Two months, 8 weeks – that’s a hell of a long time.
Mnemosyne
@Shell:
Yeah, but that’s Obama. He’s a stiletto guy, not a hatchet man. He’d rather cut his opponent into a thousand pieces than hack away.
Every Midwestern kid can tell you that when mom or dad gets quiet, that’s when you’re in the most trouble. Obama is like that, too.
Mnemosyne
@Barb2:
The Midwestern temperament is a close match with the Hawaiian one, I think — that’s why so many Minnesota missionaries were able to happily settle there.
dogwood
@Shell:
The problem so many democrats have always had with this president is they want him to be something he’s not and do and say things that have never been part of his public persona. What has worked for him these past 8-9 years on the national stage is his authenticity. His wife made the case that he is consistent and real. And I remember reading a piece in ’08 by a Bush Justice Department lawyer, Carol Platt Lebeau, who was on law review with Obama. She said that the guy running for Pres. is exactly who he is.

Our presidents are better
We are the Democrats

@Mnemosyne:
OT, Odom and Diggs are on the International Best Dressed List (Vanity Fair).

@Mnemosyne:
And the winters are much, much nicer.

Gas is $2 a gallon, thanks for reminding me. THANKS OBAMA!

@gogol’s wife:
I had to search for Daveed — they put him under “Originals” and not with the rest of the men, though at least they provided plenty of pictures. They didn’t use my favorite one — it was the purple plaid suit he wore to the White House.
(ETA: Found it!)
Did I mention that my friend got to meet Daveed and he was such a sweetheart that she now wants to steal him away to be her imaginary ex-husband? Don’t tell either of our real-life husbands, though.
Leslie Odom is a very stylish and classically dressed gentleman, but I guess I like mine a little more eccentric.
:-)
gogol's wife
@Mnemosyne:
Yes, I’m more into Diggs than Odom, as performers as well. But they’re both great. I’m so jealous of your friend!
But Chris Jackson is my imaginary ex-husband. Wait a minute, why “ex-“?
Kay
Very inspiring speech. I talked to my daughter today. Bernie primary voter. She’s mad about the treatment of Clinton getting sick. I wonder how many people feel like it was just mean to “just pile on her when she didn’t feel well”.
More than a few, I bet.
Ernest Pikeman
Damn, I love this guy. That ad lib “Thanks, Obama” was classic.
Didn’t mean to but ended watching the whole 40 minutes. Some quality speechifying!

@gogol’s wife:
It’s a riff on one of Jeff Goldblum’s lines in Jurassic Park: “I’m always on the lookout for a future ex-Mrs. Malcolm.”
Timurid
@Dog Dawg Damn:
Excellent.
Matt McIrvin
@Kay: Interesting. As I mentioned earlier, some hardcore Berniacs I’ve seen around were actually touting Hillary’s health problems as if they were a third chance for Bernie.
Villago Delenda Est
@efgoldman:
This, this, this. No quarter for the alt.right and Drumpf.

@Turgidson: The poll that sows PBO at 58% approval is also telling us that more people now approve of him than originally voted for him. This is terrific news. Who are these converts? No idea, but they are potentially very important.

@Matt McIrvin: talking about people wilth real mental health problems.they really need help
PaulWartenberg2016
@Dog Dawg Damn:
Can they verify the timeline?

I loved watching Obama today so much. He seems so happy and free. And Hillary is climbing that mountain, trying to take on the burden Obama has overcome. I don’t envy her all she’s gone through.

Our POTUS has NFTG. ..and, it’s a beautiful sight.
