A reader wrote in with a very interesting question:

“Why would anyone forge the documents?”

Why, indeed? Whowould forge them is just as good a question. That, to me, rather than whether or not the President and his staff relied on British intelligence for a line in the SOTU address, seems to be the reall issue.

    Motive? Who paid for them? Why were they paying for them? What did the intend to accomplish? Etc.

    I am sure money was involved.

    Slate has a rundown; it looks like someone assumed (probably correctly) that a second-string intelligence agency would pay cash money for them.
