My senior year, I’m at Disney again (but this time as a tutor for my sister in an AA Studies competition), and I’m talking to someone when in the background Don Lemon asks if MH370 was sucked in by a black hole – which immediately struck me as the stupidest fucking thing I ever heard in the news that wasn’t discriminatory in intent. Actually, yes. Maybe not in the very beginning, but within the first two or three years. CNN made their bones in January 1991 covering the first Gulf War. They were fearless, and innovative, and put the three broadcast networks to shame. I remember seeing Tom Brokaw covering the first night of action, using CNN’s footage (because NBC had none of its own), and grudgingly but sincerely giving props to their upstart cable rival. Before that, it had been known, derisively, as “Chicken Noodle Network.” Not after the Baghdad Boys did their thing.

It was okay. But cable news has always had the problem that there is never enough news to keep people talking for 24 hours. In the old days, they would just repeat a lot. It was the ever-increasing introduction of commentary shows that really sent everything to hell.

In addition they’ve failed to handle the racial issues of GOT with sensitivity sometimes. The fact they seemed surprised by the criticism of the white savior narrative underlying Daenerys’ whole storyline is concerning as well.
Add in that, we as a country, have never addressed in any comprehensive way the facts of our own history of slavery. For example, Sally Hemings was Thomas Jefferson’s captive, not his mistress; by any reasonable conception this means she was incapable of freely consenting to having sex with him that wasn’t buried under coercion, therefore he raped her.

@J R in WV: Thank you. The only downside of being an unintentional monastic is explaining to my separately coupled parents that how I celebrated my birthday was having a delicious peach from the farmer’s market for breakfast. Had to turn the convo to other things about them.
But the peach was singularly delicious, and fully appreciated by this little soul in body – and the day was fine and better for it.

Ooh! You and I are practically twins! I turned fitty-six just three days ago!

I liked the LG&M wrap up of this. Especially to post of all Chris’ headlines since the 2016 campaign started. What a vacuous twit he is and CNN is an enabler in all this.
