Bill Cassidy has not been the only smiling face. Donald Trump had a big smile on his face when he made the big deal on the budget, debt ceiling, and hurricane relief with Pelosi and Schumer.

In addition I think that all of that “good buddy” stuff from Trump towards Schumer and Pelosi plus McConnell and Ryan’s chagrin was playacting. And while Trump may be dumb in many ways, double-dealing and backstabbing aren’t among them, in that one way he is very shrewd and not to be underestimated. Schumer and Pelosi got played. And, while Digby says it is “spilled milk now” Schumer and Pelosi should be horrified they allowed themselves to be duped in spite of the fact their opponents have repeatedly shown their ruthlessness and mendacity. Schumcr and Pelosi looked at Trump, McConnell and Ryan as someone with whom you could make a deal for the good of their country. They aren’t. Schumer thought Trump liked him. No, he just liked the naivety and saw Schumer & Pelosi’s willingness to make a good deal for their country as an opportunity to screw them and the rest of us. Giving other people the shaft when they think they are making a deal is what Donald does. Ask the thousands of contractors who sued him in court.

The best part of the whole thing is Kimmel saying not to like the video on Facebook, but to call Congress. (I think a lot of the rest is really good, too, but it’s really important that he included that action point in his monologue.)

I just spent a minute looking at the comments on YouTube and, much to my delight, they are not all sociopaths who want people to die. In fact, the vast majority of them are very supportive, and the one sociopath (who told another commenter it would be better if that commenter’s child died) was getting flayed by other commenters. It gives me hope for humanity.

Dumpster isn’t that shrewd because it assumes he has a clue about the arcane rules of Congress, especially the Senate. I do not make that assumption. You know what they say about people that do.
As for the Turtle and Eddie, they were all sour grapes because they really did not get what they wanted. It wasn’t an act. How do you suppose they like the idea of going into the holidays and the mid-term election looking a government shutdown in the face?
You can buy into the idea that all these idiots in the GOP are somehow chess masters, but I’m not. Digby isn’t any better at analyzing these people than I am. That’s why I don’t read her anymore. I don’t find her to be any more insightful than my average Facebook friend.
ETA: Plus, she has signed on to write for Salon. Anyone who does that at this point simply has little to no credibility with me.

@patrick II: Schumer and Pelosi got exactly what they wanted. No one rolled them. Trump the great negotiator folded hard with no real effort on their part. Kicking the can down the road to after the midterms would have been a huge benefit to Republicans. And the idea that we wouldn’t be where we are now with Graham-Cassidy because the republicans would have been preoccupied by a government shutdown seems too fantastical to me.

@patrick II: Actually, an argument can be made that what got this fetid Graham-Cassidy ball rolling was Wilmer shattering a truly bipartisan effort to protect the ACA by talking up a single-payer bill instead. That peeled off some Dems who would otherwise have supported the bipartisan effort, and so the GOP responded by cobbling up the Graham-Cassidy atrocity.

This is the gist of our disagreement then. If the republicans had made healthcare a higher priority than the debt ceiling, budget and hurricane relief with out the Schumer/Pelosi deal that would mean a government shut down and bad credit and unfunded emergency in the midst of the aftermath of two, now three, hurricanes. The country would be in real trouble and Republicans could not get re-elected if they showed that level of incompetence. They, McConnell and Ryan, were always gong to need democratic votes because of the Freedom Caucus.
And what makes you think they will keep the deal? McConnell has already bragged that he has put language in the bill that negates the deal. So now what do you have? 30 million without health insurance which will lead to about 35,000 unnecessary deaths annually.

First, the driving force behind the evil being done in congress and White House are Republican functional sociopaths, not Democrats.
Second, The Replican establishment (as opposed to the freedom caucus) are getting pretty much what they wanted. No government shutdown or debt crisis during a time of crisis. Plus it looks as if Obamacare will be repealed.
Third. The democrats lost what they needed. A crowded calendar with real crisis crowding out Ocare Repeal.

@CaseyL: That’s not exactly true – Graham-Cassidy was in the pipeline long before Sanders put his single-payer bill on the table. I agree that Sanders timing was certainly unhelpful (he should have waited until October 1st), but it’s not as if the GOP’s efforts to kill Obamacare one last time only exist because of Sander’s bill.

But my biggest problem is the democrats using debt ceiling relief for leverage at all. I don’t think they are sociopathic enough to actually destroy the country’s finances. The Freedom Caucus would so that’s an actual threat, but not the democrats. It’s no good holding a gun to their head if they know you won’t use it.

I even got into a facebook fight with a professional activist friend of mine. He wanted me to stop calling the protesters idiots because they have a valid point of view (that we shouldn’t be ‘elevating’ DACA recipients into the ‘good immigrants’, because that implies the rest of them are bad). I persisted, because that’s a fine argument to make but you don’t publicly embarrass the person that saved 800,000 lines because you think they did it wrong. That just divides the entire party when we’re all on the same side, and it makes us look like idiots to the independents.

@patrick II: I don’t think the Democrats would use the debt ceiling to push for new policy. They can easily shrug and say they’re entirely willing to relieve the debt ceiling in exchange for keeping certain Obama-era policies in place. There’s enough republicans that will cave to public pressure to do that, and all the Dems are doing is extending the old (non-crazy) status quo.
That said, I’m uncomfortable with ANYONE using the Debt Ceiling as a policy vehicle. I suppose there’s a lot to be said for the fact that republicans have been doing it for years, and you don’t bring just a knife to a gunfight.

Dealing with those other issues in a slightly-compressed time frame because they also were passing a health care bill would have been somewhat more inconvenient, but not by any stretch of the imagination undoable. My point is that, from a political perspective, health care is more important to them than those other items (two of which actually are politically difficult), so they would have found the time if they had the votes, regardless of whether there was a deal between Trump and the Dems on the other issues. Heck, they could have done health care while they were trying to figure out the other items.
All of the commentary about how hard it was going to be to deal with the budget, the debt ceiling and the hurricane relief bill was not about whether there wasn’t time in the legislative calendar – there was plenty of time. It was about whether they could figure out a deal that would pass at all. That’s why it’s nonsensical to say that Schumer and Pelosi cutting the deal they did enabled the health care vote.
