Russia vs Saudi Arabia is like an intramural match between two Galactic Empire teams.
No one to root for….

I’m really interested in people explaining why not to watch. I’m also VERY interested in everyone’s opinion off the NYT.

For this Mets fan, this match is like a Braves-Yankees World Series, except the Braves didn’t install Trump in the White House or shoot down a civilian jetliner over territory it conquered from Ukraine, and the Yankees don’t finance ISIS and aren’t bombing hospitals in Yemen.

Yes and the World Cup is not about soccer it’s about the fucking host country.

Those kids made me smile with thier unbridled joy.

@BGinCHI: Agreed. Commenters on the soccer blog I read made the same observation. And also were happy the United 2026 bid won over Morocco bid, as (apparently) being LGBTQ is illegal in Morocco. It made me happy to see progressive values expressed in a place where I would not necessarily expect to see them.

@hitless: I hope the US can get its act together by then (in soccer terms, but of course in all other terms as well).
Hoping now Canada will invade just so they can get a better side for that tournament.

A Russian-American friend of mine had tickets to several of the games. He decided that he had been too outspoken on Facebook about Putin for it to be safe to go back, so he turned them in. He was on to the Trump-Putin connection early on in the campaign, so I don’t think he’s being paranoid.

IIRC, the host country’s team always gets to play in the opening game as a courtesy, so I’m rooting for injuries and hoping that more worthy teams emerge as the contest goes on.
Ukraine vs Malaysia for the Cup would be amusing, but the odds are strongly against that.
