My girlfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to celebrate our birthdays. This cruise included 2 days in Cuba which was the most interesting part of the trip. These pictures are from Havana, a paradoxical city of tremendous beauty and decrepitness.

We woke up to see the coast of Cuba gliding past or state room window. We entered the port just as the day was dawning.

Our visa was a P2P visa that required us to take a tour before we could explore on our own. Our first stop was the Habana Compas Dance company, which is an independent group that mixes Spanish flamenco, African rhythm, Cuban music into a unique percussive dance style. The chair is central to the group’s identity as the troupe would use the chair to practice drumming and then started incorporating them into their choreography. It was a great start to our tour.

Fusterlandia- Havana

Our next stop was Jose Fuster‘s whimsical neighborhood that has become known as Fusterlandia. Fuster began decorating his own home with mosaic tiles in a colorful childlike style heavily influenced by Picasso. He spread his work throughout the neighborhood until the area became an artist colony and a well known tourist attraction. It’s also true that you see the 50s cars everywhere in Havana. This beautiful 57 Buick convertible we’re sitting right outside I’ve Fuster’s home.

Lunch was served in this beautiful colonial era courtyard and included the Cuba libre.

We crossed under the harbor to tour the fortress and see the world’s longest cigar, then viewed the sun setting over the city. It was a long day but we still had plans to experience more of this intriguing city
