Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Let me file that under fuck it.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The revolution will be supervised.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

We will have plenty of time to call each other neoliberal shills and Bernie bros in 2020, and still more time to freak out about the general election polls in 2020.

What matters this year is off-year elections. You may have some local off-year elections. In my county, we have a county exec election. I believe the Democrat (Adam Bello) will win and if I can find any time at all, I will work for that Democrat.

There aren’t a ton of off-year state-level elections. The most important ones are probably in Virginia. Many of you have asked me to raise money for the Democrats in the House and Senate there. You can give to Virginia Dems here.

Doug, you need to come up with a pithy description for supporters of clueless, handsy windbag Uncle Joe Biden.

Virginia is really, really important, and both the State Senate and House of Delegates are well within reach. Send some bucks to the Virginia Democratic Party. They used the money effectively in 2017, and they’ll do the same this year.

@randy khan: Yes, indeed, because if either chamber flips it’s lights out for good on the obnoxious gerrymandering that has been perpetrated at every legislative level. And they know it too, which is they have suddenly become advocates of fair redistricting.

    @Barbara:

    become advocates of fair redistricting.

While still appealing to the US Supreme Court to either preserve their racist gerrymander or delay undoing it long enough for them to steal one more election, grrr.

Bill, great Elsinore picture a couple floors down (I was an idiot; I had gone to San Diego and was close, but I cut north at Temecula because I, for some sick reason, wanted to make San Bernardino before lunch … San Bernardino over poppies, oh man, I wish I had THAT one over).

That said, if I got into the mess, I probably would have said screw it (Lancaster was bad enough and that wasn’t that bad in comparison).

Shit, Duke wins and UCI loses; not a good day to have me watching and rooting. I think I’m an O-fer.

    Good timing!

I donated already to my Virginia peeps tonight, but I’ll be sure to kick in some here tomorrow.

    It’s really, really, really important.

    Thanks, Doug!

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Isn’t New Jersey the other state that has its elections in off-off years as well? Virginia and New Jersey have their elections for state office at the same time. The primary day is June 4, 2019. BTW, can we have a thread for all those random and scattered otherwise 2019 primaries and elecrtions and initiatives? While there’s no Congressional races (unless special ones), remember local elections are important too (your mayor determines where those water pipes go).

Unofficial Primary Results Look at the petition numbers. Don’t tell me that there aren’t more Democrats than that in those districts.

We’re having an election for our state supreme court in Wisconsin. Unfortunately it is on April 2nd so it is probably too late to beg for money here, but the conservative running, Brian Hagedorn, is a homophobic, misogynistic, culture-war nightmare, whereas his opponent is an actual professional. If there is any chance money could go that direction this late in the game it would be great.
