    yes, they do! I’ve planted six now, though one is a transplant from my MI house, and none have bloomed yet but the transplant. This will be the third year for the first three, so hoping for at least a couple of flowers. “First they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap”.

    We had an unexpectedly colorful late November and the weather at the beach was the best we’ve had at Thanksgiving. The garden is dormant, kudzu is dead  and I put two big bluefish heads on a fire ant bed way down back so we’ll see if we get some cool bone structures,

    The building I live in is holding a massive holiday celebration today. Food, entertainment, sitting in the cold around a fire pit (should you choose), and an unbelievable number of kids. Everyone who lives here invites their grandchildren. Staff and their families are all invited too. Last I heard they were expecting 400 people in addition to the 300 or so who live here.

    One of the rudest things in nature is that peonies don’t last longer. It’s like bullying rain clouds lurk, just waiting to knock them down.

    I have an electric inspector coming at 9 tomorrow morning.  So, on top of all the regular shoveling of the foot of snow this week from the walks and driveway etc., I have to shovel a path through my yard to the meters on the side of my house. Joy!

    @Dorothy A. Winsor: I did not mean it to be sarcastic. The Immp and I are getting on with it. Inspired by your recent not dull adventure cruise, I am planning a Mediterranean cruise for the two of us this Spring. I’m on sabbatical and the Immp is starting to get restless from too much rest. One reason a cruise seems like the right thing is, as I understand it, almost a constant presentation of food. The Immp must graze, not dine.

    I liked Viking a lot.  It’s pricey but a lot of things are included that other lines nickel and dime you for. Frex, an excursion at every stop (though you can add others on for a fee); beer, wine, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; and bottled water. Free Wi-Fi when they could get it .

    They try to be (for want of a better word) educational. They had a historian and an astronomer on board who gave talks.

    There’s no casino, no art auction, no one snapping your picture all the time and trying to sell it to you. Also, no children under 13.

    Also Mr DAW and I both gained weight on this trip, and, like Immp, I have a hard time doing that. There’s a formal dining room, but also a cafeteria that’s open most of the time. Also a poolside grill.

    The crowd will be old though.

    Years ago I won a dendrobium orchid at a car show at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden here in Miami.  As it the case with all orchids in South Florida, the best way to handle them is hang them outside in the proper light and just let them be.  This one took off on its own and outgrew its original nest to the point that it (and the natural degradation) required repotting, such as it is with these.  And it’s taken off with a new bloom and several more on the way.  I am no gardener but I do know when to leave well enough alone.

    Wow!  I just looked at my weather report after Chris’ comment.  I am going to see a steady temperature climb here from 20 right now to 60 by Tuesday.  Crazy!  I better dig out the storm drain in front of my house too.

    Oh, peonies were my mother’s favorite! She had a couple spectacular ones in front of their back deck.  So beautiful!

    The J.M. Smucker Company has announced a voluntary recall of Special Kitty wet, canned cat food due to health concerns.

    The company says it potentially contains ingredients that do not meet quality and safety standards.

    The specific product is Special Kitty Mixed Grill Dinner Pate. It was sold individually as well as part of variety packs.

    If pet parents have any of the products in their possession, they should stop feeding it to their cats and dispose of the product.

    I’ve never bought this product, but I’m linking in case any cat-loving commenters here have this brand on their shelves.

    @ MomSense:  beautiful peonies.  I did not realize they were so delicate to grow, and hard to establish at first.  They’re a favorite flower, because they seem somewhat rare.

     

    Would be fun to have a pic of the garden in winter, too.  Brrrr.

    @Immanentize:   A Mediterranean cruise sounds wonderful.  For Immp grazing and everything else.  All the small plates at cruise ports and walking and culture.

     

    @Dorothy A. Winsor:   Viking sounds wonderful.  It’s a bit above my price point, but I appreciate that they include the shore excursions and adult beverages.

    Peonies and orchids in the same post, to remind me of my mum, a great gardener, thank you. I love a closely planted cottage garden with soft colors, too. Mum was more formal, with everything spaced, but eventually I persuaded her that this meant MORE weeds, and she did agree. Wish I could do these things now, so it’s so nice to see other people’s brilliant efforts.

    Nice plant. I bought a couple orchids in bloom, they live OK, growing, new leaves, but never ever bloom again. So I quit.
