Good Morning Everybody,
I hope this finds you well. Bad shit’s about, take care.
On a more positive note, let’s go –
A few months ago, I shared a few pictures of West Franklin Street here in Evansville and since they seemed to go over well, here’s an album with comments about each picture. Feel free to choose the best ones to share or just link the entire album.

Evansville, Indiana? Pretty looking town. Ever get up around South Bend give me a heads up!

Wow, I lived in Evansville back in the early 1980s. Looks like it’s changed since then – to a place where someone might want to live.

Your photos are wonderful. Apparently there is a Texas transplant in front of the gun shop.

This is Evansville, Indiana. My son lives within a mile or two of the area shown. This is a neighborhood northwest of the main downtown area of Evansville, which is southeast from this area right on the north and east side of a big bend in the Ohio river. If you want a really good breakfast, right in this neighborhood on main drag is the Kite and Key Restaurant. Good German style Bratkartoffeln with an Eggs Benedict. They have an annual street fair in this neighborhood that is well attended, too.

I’ve only been in Evansville once, fleetingly for a college visit with my son – and I obviously missed this area. Now I feel like I should stop in and take a closer look next time I’m that-a-way.

Evansville! Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by ….
I’ve only stayed on the outskirts of Evansville – I’ll have to look at Darrin’s album. Less than an hour east of Evansville is a v. small town named Santa Claus, home of Holiday World – which not only claims to be the oldest theme park, but is home to three fantastic roller coasters. Highly recommended.

Hey, that’s a much more inviting view of Evansville than I remember from visiting there very briefly in 2005!

@HeartlandLiberal: The “annual street fair” is actually like the second largest in the country (after Mardi Gras).
I was sooo disappointed when I moved away and found out what even cities like Chicago and New York considered street fairs.

The towns that missed out on the “urban renewal” of the 60s, 70s, and 80s now find themselves in the fortunate position of having the very charming building stock right there to reinvent themselves. Yay for historic preservation. Even when it’s accomplished by accident, people take advantage of the opportunity.
And it helps (a lot!) when the government is with you on this.
Not in Evansville but yeah, I got a dog in this fight.

Midwestern tavern life. . .seems like a dream to me now.

I’ve never been to Indiana, and I loved these pictures. I’m glad someone fights to preserve this kind of architectural heritage.

Very nice pictures. Unsurprisingly, reminiscent of old towns in Ohio as well. It’s good to see them trying to come back. Here’s hoping they do well.
It’s also good to see the gun shop falling on hard times. ;-)
‘morning all. Have a good day and a good week.
Cheers,
Scott.

Great building stock. I’m a downtown revitalization consultant — always love to see a beautiful Main Street.
What’s the story on that 4-lane street? Who’s in charge of it? Whatever agency owns and maintains it could use a management approach to the street right-of-way that would help downtown a lot.

Nice! We have a friend who teaches at the U there, and have visited him but never the city. Now I think I need to visit.

Looks very Midwesty in that main drag way. Could easily be Iowa.
Is parking one’s Suburban on the sidewalk considered SOP?

Evansville looks strangely deserted for a place with such attractive architecture. You must have been up early on a Sunday morning to get these shots!

So cool. I live about one tenth of a mile East of the Evansville city line. The Fall Festival is one fun week for eating anything excessively sweet or excessively fried or excessively both.

My family owned women’s clothing stores (“Salm’s”) in Evansville from about 1905-1967. I lived there till I was ten (in 1961), when we moved to SoCal (San Diego County). I was, at first, devastated; eventually I wised up.
Real estate lesson: We sold our three-bedroom house in Evansville for about $30,000 and bought a similar house in Carlsbad (northern San Diego County) for almost exactly the same price. The houses are still there. Zillow says: Evansville house — $225,000; Carlsbad house — $870,000.

@trollhattan:
It is if you own the (now out of business) gun shop.

@Betsy: That’s not downtown Evansville.
West Franklin is on Evansville’s west side and once was the center of commerce and industry for that side of town.
