Made it back in one piece, Sam and Lily said their goodbyes, and now back at Balloon Juice HQ:
According to Tammy, Lily was awful the whole time I was gone. Mean to Sam, took over Sam’s bed, and ran off twice, forcing Tammy to run around in the rain. Lily was happy to see me, though.

She missed you.
I’d be seriously worried about that taking off behavior. I can’t stand to think of her getting lost.
Tammy
She wasn’t that bad. She just
missed her John Cole. Details to come after I finish my stellar chilli I just made. Well that and when I’m done watching the original grey gardens documentary. If you haven’t seen the hbo movie, you’re missing out. Cheers.

Dogs are children. She was pissy because you left her. She’ll be fine, Sam will be fine, but I totally understand the frustration on all sides.
She’ll have to get used to being left with other caregivers. Our dog Wendy always gives me the cold shoulder when we pick her up from the kennel, even though they treat her like a queen. Then when we get home, she’s all Mommy’s girl again.
They are children!
bey
Sounds like she was very unsettled with Dad gone. Cranky and uncooperative is much better than withdrawn and hiding like she used to be, though. She’s clearly a lot more confident and bolder in expressing her displeasure. I say that’s a big win.

How has the server today?

I see Tunch merits neither no photo, nor even a mention.
Is anyone here familiar with, and willing to imitate, what the commenter “Chang, Who Is Not Chang” does at John Scalzi’s blog Whatever?

John,
Is it possible, at some point in the future, to add more advanced features to the Search Function such as:
1) Searching for keywords contained in the comments and not just in the posts written by you, Tim, Doug, and Anne
2) Searching for keywords within a date range
Anne Laurie
Lily thinks Tammy is a threat to her relationship with you, John. That’s good, insofar as it means she’s bonded securely enough that she’s willing to “disobey” when she feels neglected, but it’s probably time for you to start doing some training work with her around other people/dogs. If there isn’t a formal training class convenient for you, at least start doing a few minutes of on-lead attention, heeling, and sit/stay exercises while you’re at the dog park.

I’m not sure that Lily ran off. That is, she may have gone looking for you. Don’t know. But she obviously didn’t view where she was as an acceptable temporary home base without you there.
An interesting little training issue….

Wish I knew. I’ve got gremlins in the stuck space station with DSL acting weird again. Was out all afternoon, and suddenly came back on around 5 pm here. Qwest swears it’s not the signal, but I don’t know what else it could be. third time it’s conked out around noon and come back on about 5 or so. Oh well, it’s working now,

You’re saying we need three buttons, Edit, Delete, and Pie?
Down that path lies the Daily Kos’s “troll rating” of comments, and madness. Or at least a more univocal commentariat.

@Keith G:
Thanks for the heads-up; I’ll twiddle some of my Firefox knobs.
Sorry, John!
JK
@Keith G:
I appreciate your response, but I was hoping for a Search Function on the home page.
If I’m interested in finding a keyword within the comments section, it would be advantageous to be able to type those words in a search box on the home page and get back 30 or 40 results where I could see the posts and dates where the comments containing the keywords appeared.
The option you’re suggesting, going to individual posts one at a time and hitting Ctrl-F, is much more labor intensive.
John Cole
@JK: I’ll be glad to throw whatever plugin you want in, find it and tell me. If you see it on another blog, point me to it.
We do have a search bar on the left, though. That is what I use.

@gnomedad: No, I don’t have an edit button in Firefox either. It does show up when I comment using my iTouch, however.
Edit to add: And when I use Safari.

It goes without saying that John Phillips was a major league scumbag and lowlife.
In addition, I’ve always disliked the music of the Mamas and the Papas. Their commercial success mystifies me.

The first night of doggy sleep overs are the hardest. Sam and Lily just didn’t have enough time together to define their own space. When Moxie’s friend Gracie stays over, they play tag during the middle of the night. My sons sleep overs were easier.

@JK:
They produced some wonderful music for those of us who like vocal harmonies, q.v. ‘All the Leaves Are Brown’. Doesn’t mean Phillips wasn’t a scumbag, or at least a seriously fvcked-up human being who warped the lives of those closest to him.
JK
@Anne Laurie:
I love vocal harmonies too such as Crosby, Still, and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Beach Boys.
I’ve just always considered the Mamas and Papas to be vastly overrated.

The Mama’s and the Papa’s were a point in history band. they captured the atmospherics of the times into poppish but soothing emotional harmonies. There was a lot of angst going on and they provided a respite from the social upheaval taking place. At least that’s what they meant to me as a mixed up teenager growing up in a mixed up land.

@MMM: Tunch’s feelings were not hurt. That is absurd. He is above that. However, his High Dignified Tunchness does value respect and protocol, especially from these impertenent ‘owners’. Tunch has noted it, no doubt. Digger deeper Mr. Cole, dig deeper. And when Tunch has had just about enough, we, your loyal minions, will be able to do nothing to help.
As far as I know, Tunch kept the server up just fine. Seems like things go very well when Tunch is home alone and is allowed to run things without troublesome meddling.
The cute doggy love story we are watching unfold, is sincerely touching, though. I admit that.
Glad everything went well while Cole was gone.

Tunch is introspective and satisfied with change that leaves him open space and the comfort to contemplate. However, he welcomes the return of Lily and John with open hunger for fresh Fancy Feast or other kitty kibbles. Such are cats in love with life. Tunch photo, please.

Regarding the Mamas and the Papas, I always appreciated the twistedness (twistiosity?)of forcing your wife and the guy she cheated with to sing “I saw her again last night even though that I shou-ou-oudn’t” every night.

Clearly Lily still has abandonment issues. For the first time in her life, she feels secure with John. And, then John leaves, Tunch doesn’t call, and she is confused. It will take time and experience recognizing that when John leaves, he does come back. Maybe that is what John should practice more. Having her spend time with other families, only to return.
