Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Be a wild strawberry.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Unbelievable:

Just after President Trump’s defense lawyers ended arguments in their Senate trial Tuesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein suggested she could vote to acquit him, despite serious concerns about his character.

“Nine months left to go, the people should judge. We are a republic, we are based on the will of the people — the people should judge,” Feinstein said Tuesday, after the president’s team finished a three-day presentation in his defense. “That was my view and it still is my view.”

[…]

After those remarks were published, Feinstein issued a statement saying she had been misunderstood.

“Before the trial I said I’d keep an open mind. Now that both sides made their cases, it’s clear the president’s actions were wrong. He withheld vital foreign assistance for personal political gain. That can’t be allowed to stand.”

Misunderstood! After the discipline of Schiff spending hours laying out his case in the most precise language, she makes a stupid off-the-cuff remark like that and has to walk it back. And it is so stupid, because the fundamental reason for impeaching Trump is that he’s meddling with the next election with the purpose of thwarting the will of the people.

Jesus, a child could understand that argument.

Just to be clear, I’m not just upset that she made a dumb comment that she had to walk back. What’s really scary is that that she might be reflecting what some other “institutionalist” Democrats in the Senate really think. Also, “Well if even San Francisco liberal DiFi has concerns about impeachment, how can I explain my vote to the voters of <purple or red state>”.

There isn’t enough alcohol in the world, there just isn’t…

I have been extremely negative to her on Twitter and voicemail, and I am still pissed off by this:

“Nine months left to go, the people should judge. We are a republic, we are based on the will of the people — the people should judge,” Feinstein said Tuesday, after the president’s team finished a three-day presentation in his defense. “That was my view and it still is my view.”

She could have just said the trial is still going on and therefore she hasn’t made up her mind, but no. Hopefully she got enough of an earful from my fellow Californios, but jeez, that is bad no matter how she walks it back. And yes, I’m emotional, I’ve defended her here and other places and I feel betrayed. Don’t tell me to calm down, either, it’ll just piss me off more and I have a doctor’s appointment in 45 minutes and my blood pressure is going to be sky-high.

very interesting about this new WSJ report– I can’t get twitter on my machine and WSJ has a paywalll, so no link, but Ari Melber is talking about a very aggressively sourced, “In the room”, report that McConnell doesn’t have the votes about witnesses. I’m curious about who won’t vote for what, wrt especially Hunter, of course.

@HRH mistermix, Lord Bombay Sapphire, Duke of Schweppes: I don’t think so. The witness trade was shot down hard by Schumer.

As part of the process, they have a vote of whether to consider witness. That’s the vote in question here. Then there’s a process of submitting witness requests to leadership, I think it is, and they introduce individual motions for votes. They don’t need to introduce every rando request, but things they think are relevant. It could be none will pass. There will probably be some negotiating in how the motions are structured, whether individual witnesses, open or closed session, all that garbage.

This was my reply to BettyCracker down below, Feinstein is old.  She forgot details.  If you watch her closely, you notice she depends on her staff to fill in a lot of details.

My mother is nine months older than Senator Feinstein.  My guess is that some of this is age related cognitive decline.  She’s forgotten some details and her staff will set her straight and she’ll come out and “clarify” what she said later on.  Or I could be completely wrong.  I think she should have retired rather than running for her current term.  She will be 90 at the end of her term.

Feinstein’s words,”We are a Republic based on the will of the people.”  Fails to include ‘We elected representatives are complelled to perform our duties to our constituents and uphold the Constitution.’  Her statement is eligible for a D in civics.  If we had to wait for the next election why have Senators?  There are polls.  There are legal reasons for Feinstein to take a stand.

I had quite a few friends in San Francisco who hated her for consistently similar behavior.  She was the liberal version of “good people on both sides.”  It’s the opposite of MLK’s despair about neutrality and silence in the face of injustice.

It’s hard to imagine how she got to her second statement since the first was internally incoherent.  Did Sekulow, Bondi, and Dershowitz’ logic-pretzels infiltrate her mind?

Film and TV production work is usually gig work where you work for 9 months and then scramble to fill the gaps. @Baud,

Raven’s post in the morning thread,

    Hey ya’ll

I’ve hesitated to even get back into this since we’ve got folks who absolutely know exactly what happened and why. If I state my case it could only be by throwing other people, who I respect, under the bus and I’m not going to do that. I was drawn here by the openness and freedom of expression and, for the most, part that continues. Azul is not coming back so it’s up to me to determine my own course. BJ has obviously grown quite a bit in the decade plus that I have been participating and I guess it requires an increased level of vigilance to keep things “safe”. For me it is a matter of integrity and I just don’t feel I can go on under the current circumstances. Maybe it’s for the best since I retired and won’t be chained to the box day-in-and-day out. There are plenty of folks here who I feel a kinship with and I’ll miss that. Fair winds.

@Mnemosyne:  The specific sentences about the US is a Republic and 9 months to go appear in the reporter’s transcription of the tape of Feinstein’s interview.  They seem to fit with patterns of her career as a centrist / moderate.  My observations are speculative but we’ve got to decide if we still believe we can work with the GOP or if they at war with us and will mor be satisfied until we surrender.  Are we going to Weimar / Chamberlain (He had excellent reasons to delay.) or Churchill?  Neither approach is ideal but we should try to thread the needle for now.  Feinstein seems to want to stall on deciding but saying “the will of the people” in 9 months seems like: I don’t want to do my job.  Her second statement was much better.

I’ve lived in Cali my entire life (52 years), and have never voted for DiFi. Not once. And even though she took pains to walk back and clarify, this is exactly why. She’s 125 years old and just got-re-elected in 2018. She’s in the bluest of states. She could be out front in declaiming and knocking town this human centipede of an administration, and calling them out for the dung beetles they are. But no, we mustn’t perturb our well-intentioned colleagues, who always go above and beyond to be civil and cordial and play by the rules as well as the spirit.

These fucking people, all of them. The more one looks at the current composition of the Yew Ass Senate, the more one can see the positives in term limits and maximum retirement ages. If we basically agree that this country and the world face some serious challenges in the decades to come, then maybe the best people to address the situation aren’t doddering centrists who can’t even muster ten seconds of full-throated declamation to the worst set of traitors this country has seen in 150 years, instead of explaining themselves to them.

some people just have way too much time on their hands and work overtime to make other people miserable or stir up shit for no reason. Sometimes I wonder if it was the right call, but then invariably the person banned sends me thirty sweaty emails or in one case about 150 fb messages (FROM TWO DIFFERENT FB ACCOUNTS) and the wisdom of my decision is confirmed. There are a whole lot of you and relatively few of us. When I am getting 100 emails about one person, it’s not ME who is the fucking problem.

isn’t clear enough? And raven, for whatever reason, decided on his own that this was a decision he didn’t like and so took a hike. John gets to decide on the participants here at the shebeen and raven is as entitled as anyone else to take a break, or even decide it doesn’t suit him any longer. He’s a big boy too.

The best way I can put this is that I deeply resent that one of the senators representing my state seems not to have made that decision yet. And I don’t know if a word in the English language even exists to describe how baffling and inexplicable I find such a stance.

We could have set her out on an ice floe with a crate of Matlock DVDs and been done with her a couple years ago, and gotten someone born after Lawrence Welk. This nation has a bizarre fixation on never retiring their politicians, even when they aren’t very good.

She never seems to have any trouble speaking her mind with directness and conviction.

I can promise you that however all this shakes out, whether there is violence or (hopefully) not, whether Dear Leader gets evicted and actually vacates the house, nobody is ever going to say, “Hey, remember when all this criminality was going on right in front of us, and the administration was rubbing everyone’s noses in it on a daily basis, and the Republicans all abdicated their sworn oaths, and Senator X was just really polite about it and never really raised a fuss? Sorry, I should have been clearer that I was being sarcastic. It won’t be in the least bit surprising if it turns out that the casualty count is even higher and worse, and that Trump and SecDef Raytheon have been deliberately feeding low figures to whichever credulous media dupe bothers to transcribe it without checking the facts and figures. And it’s certainly possible that there are and will be more delayed trauma victims to come forward.

Totally agree that there is still an unreasonable stigma regarding brain trauma in general, but it seems even worse in the military and pro sports.

The main thing that annoys me about this story is how fast and loose Trump plays with soldiers’ lives, and then when he gets them needlessly injured, he shrugs it off, calls them pussies and says it’s no big deal. It’s absolutely a big deal. Brain trauma gets terribly underplayed, because you can’t see it and most people don’t know much about it.
