Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Didn’t expect this happen??, for those asking, he is currently on pain relief and the vet said he should be healed within a week, this is him on the 2nd day. He is super happy and there is now movement from side to side but he is struggling to lift it up in the air. pic.twitter.com/dY0o96HOpj

— Emma smith (@Emmasmith77xx) March 21, 2020

i am a vet assistant and i can confirm that we have dogs come in for happy tail fairly often. usually they hit it against something too hard which causes the injury

— boo guy ?? (@vsbuzzell) March 21, 2020

Hi, sausage dogs are prone to spinal disorders and sadly my last one died from it. When his tail wasn’t wagging we thought he had slipped a disc and trapped a nerve in his tail which can lead to paralysis. He is part of our family and therefore his health is also a priority??

— Emma smith (@Emmasmith77xx) March 22, 2020

When I was a vet tech, we treated a friendly great dane (Zeus) who would repeatedly sprain his tail. We put a sign on his kennel that said, “Please try to avoid making Zeus happy.”

— Midlife Crisis Actor (@ScottAtHomeToo1) March 21, 2020

Thanks for everyone’s concern, im sure he will be back wagging like this in no time ?? pic.twitter.com/xyt3qR9KjI

Sea change in the ads on MSNBC.

“You can now order a Lincoln remotely.”

So today I didn’t realize I was off mute and told the Democratic Caucus (including a couple recent presidential candidates) that “…mommy is working honey, please go potty and wash your hands then mommy will come downstairs.” How’s your working from home going? ??‍♀️— Tammy Duckworth (@SenDuckworth) March 25, 2020

@Jay: Tammy Duckworth would make an *awesome* VP (backup) to President Biden, except that she’s probably too busy being a mom to risk stepping into a 24/7 job.

(If you didn’t see it, when Rand Paul was posturing about how he needed to use the Congressional pool while awaiting his coronavirus test results  ‘for his health’, she tweeted that she does her workouts at home because the Congressional facilities aren’t wheel-chair accessible.

Can’t remember who tweeted in response: So kind of Rand Paul to take Ted Cruz’s place as the most hated man in the Senate.)

Hey Alabama, hold Mississippi’s beer, would you?

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) “signed an executive order early this evening superseding a patchwork of local bans on public gatherings in Mississippi and other heightened restrictions that several municipalities across the state have ordered or considered in the wake of COVID-19’s spread inside Mississippi,” the Jackson Free Press reports.

“The order seems to declare that most types of businesses in Mississippi are ‘essential’ and thus exempt from social-distancing requirements suggested in the order.”

Reeves, Reeves, brings in the sheaves.

@HumboldtBlue: That story is horrifying. The ER doc shows the refrigerated truck they had to order to hold bodies because the morgue was full, then the hospital says, oh no, we’re fine with our morgues. She’s whistleblowing with film and pictures and may get in trouble for telling the truth to the FTFNYT.

Heard that. Terence McNally the same day I think. People of such good cheer.

True, they were both in multiple high risk categories, but still … I fear this thing is far from through hurting us.

    @Mary G:

I sort of understand the hospital’s position, because people are already freaking and hoarding shit and they don’t want to cause a total panic. But if it’s happening, concealing it will only make matters worse in the long run (and probably the medium run as well).

Why are state lotteries still operating? The California Lottery has closed its claim centers, as have some other states. So if you won something, you might have to wait for weeks to get your money. People shouldn’t be getting out just to buy lottery tickets, let alone stand around the 7-11 scratching tickets.

    @Origuy:

Why are state lotteries still operating?

States cannot coin money, and most of them are required to balance their budgets, at least nominally.   They’re paying out enormous sums in pandemic response, unemployment compensation, etc.   They need every bit of revenue they can get …

and Trump, in his characteristic transactional asshole fashion, is slow-walking the financial help to the blue states that should be the normal consequence of declaring a national emergency.  The federal government does create fiat money at will, and is supposed to backstop the states in this situation.  Trump is complaining that the governors are not “being nice to us”, so he’s disinclined to help.

    March 26, 2020 at 3:22 am

@joel hanes: Yeah, states are going to need money, but lottery money is usually earmarked for specific purposes. In California, it’s schools, in other states, it’s seniors or some other purpose. They can’t start paying MedicAid with it.

@Origuy: up here in Ontario, the premier declared a state of emergency, allowing the government to force non-essential businesses to close. Among businesses to be declared essential and so allowed to stay open are liquor stores- they are government run here and one of the biggest revenue producers for the province

@Just One More Canuck:   Liquor stores are considered essential business here in Harris and Galveston counties in Texas–because otherwise, people who are heavy or daily drinkers could go into acute alchol withdrawal (a very serious illness) and end up adding to ER/ICU patients.
