A note from Bad Horse’s Filly:
So it’s Friday and I totally forgot to send you the link for last night’s menu. It is one of my favorite recipes, Garlic, Garlic Chicken… I forgot yesterday was Thursday until I saw on my own blog this morning that it posted.
On the board tonight:
(1) Garlic, Garlic Chicken
(2) Loaf of a good crusty Artisan bread
(3) Sliced Pepper Salad
(4) Hot Apple Cider with Ginger Snaps
Click here for recipes and shopping list.
P.S. I compounded the delay by not reading John’s forwarded email sooner. My apologies to BHF, and I hope she’s been able to dig out from the Denver area’s surprise snowfall(s) without too much pain!
Yutsano
Okay Anne you done did it. I’m making chicken with forty cloves of garlic on my next day off. This should be quite the adventure.
Fulcanelli
BHF, that’s a pretty interesting article about the ‘Lane Cake’ from To Kill A Mockingbird” on yer blog. Who knew?
You find some interesting stuff in these intertubez…
Have you ever made one?
Bad Horse's Filly
Chicken, garlic, wine, how could that be bad? Sorry about the delay – I wrote it during the blizzard and set it to auto post….and then totally forgot about it. I hope anyone who tries it enjoys it as much I do.
Warm and sunny this weekend – I may even be able to cycle.
Bad Horse's Filly
@Fulcanelli: I am not the best cake baker, but a friend has thrown down the gauntlet and asked me to make one for her. Since she helped me throw a bridal shower and I owe her a BIG thank you for that, I’m seriously thinking about it.
Funny thing – Denver has this city-wide book club, this fall it was To Kill a Mockingbird and they held a workshop on how to bake things from the book – one was Lane Cake. If I’d seen it soon enough I would have signed up.
Yutsano
@Bad Horse’s Filly: FWIW my recipe is similar but the sauce is enriched with cream and some herbs. Old classic French dish.
Bad Horse's Filly
Question – has anyone seen Paranormal? Thoughts on it? (and if you all talked about it on an earlier thread, sorry, I haven’t had time yet today to look through BJ – just point me in that direction).
And big thanks Anne, as always, for posting the menus.

mmmm…roasted garlic

I’m on day 3+ of a juice/smoothie fast, and I feel absolutely great.
Green smoothies, yum!

Question: let’s say I had a site interview with a company and didn’t get an offer. If I were to apply for other jobs with that company, do you think they’d ever even give me a phone interview, let alone another site interview? or am I wasting my time?
Bad Horse's Filly
@Yutsano: Do you add the cream while cooking the chicken or after, like making a sauce? ‘Cause that sounds good.
Yutsano
@amorphous: More than likely they have different hiring managers and the skills that got you a consideration will translate better to the other position. If you mention that you applied there before (most companies ask that on an application) they may get the hint that you want to work THERE and might just give you a second and better look.
icedfire
That Denver snowstorm canceled a trip I had planned to San Francisco.
Had to get there for 9am PDT this morning…Southwest couldn’t get me there until nearly 11am.
Instead I get to watch snowflakes in the Twin Cities.
FML.
Yutsano
@Bad Horse’s Filly: The cream goes in at the very end. Makes a rich sauce that goes over the chicken. The real trick is to NOT cook the garlic too fast or too hot.
icedfire
@Bad Horse’s Filly:
I loved Paranormal Activity, about to go see it again.
It won’t work for you if you’re not prone to scaring yourself…the entire mechanism for 98% of the film is to build up the suspense and let the audience imagine the rest.
Bad Horse's Filly
@icedfire: My favorite horror movies are like that…I’m big on tension, less on gore. More Hitchcock, less Saw VI. I really like Nightmare on Elm Street and The Ring.

@amorphous: And I’ve heard that some companies play the game of making you apply several times before they will give you an offer (the logic is that you have to prove that you really want to work there). I don’t know whether that was ever really in place at any company, nor whether if ever done, if that’s still in place now.
mclaren
Can anybody explain why chicken costs more than steak now? Over the last 6 months it’s skyrocketed in cost by about a factor of 3. It’s insane. Pound for pound, chicken is literally now more expensive than steak.
Yutsano
@mclaren: Maybe that’s a regional thing cause here it’s still pretty affordable.
@Tattoosydney: And you didn’t invite me you biznatch LOL. Guess we know what your Saturday will be like!
Mark S.
God, I hope this isn’t true:
If only 6 million people (2% of the country) are going to be in the public option, why is everyone shitting a brick over it?
Martin
That recipe is more traditionally known as 40 Cloves and a Chicken. It’s an old (and very good) recipe.
Alton has a show dedicated to garlic that features it which is very, very good and funny. Dracula is his guest on the show. Should be on this weekend.
Here’s his recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/40-cloves-and-a-chicken-recipe/index.html
Linkmeister
@mclaren: I have not done a per-pound survey, but the price of boneless skinless chicken breasts is darned close to the price of steak out here in the tropics, and prices are already much higher here than the mainland.
Example: 1/2 gallon milk — $3.49
Linkmeister
Oh, the feast we had for my sister’s birthday meal this evening: 5 people, 20 lamb loin chops (1-in thick), baked potatos, asparagus.
Martin
Changes in buying habits. People are buying less steak because fewer people can afford it. They buy more chicken instead. Supply and demand. When people get less choosey, the prices of different kinds of meats all hit a common floor.
You’ll also notice that the cost of wings in particular climbs every year during football season. Goes up by about 1/3. That drives up the cost of whole chickens as well by a little bit.
Yutsano
@Martin: I’m sure our whacked-out farm policies are coming into play here somewhere.
Mark S.
@Yutsano:
That’s for sure. Of course, I had a hard time believing this part of the article:
I sure as hell haven’t been paying that little for milk.
Yutsano
@Mark S.: I’d pay $1.50 for a quart or a half-gallon maybe, but the lowest I’ve seen for a gallon in YEARS was $1.68 on sale. And that was at the store that every now and again has great sales. Hell it ain’t even that cheap at Wal-Mart.

I’m a USF alum. When I was there South Florida didn’t even *have* a football team — or for that matter, any athletic program except golf. I’ve never been much of a sports fan except for baseball, FTFY, but I have to admit I might begin paying more attention to college football since USF seems to be doing pretty well this year.
Poor John, though. Nobody loves a loser.
linda
oh hell… even i can make this. and i can tell it’s already my new favorite recipe.
burnspbesq
@SiubhanDuinne:
Every study that has ever been done has shown a strong and statistically significant positive correlation between success in football and alumni financial support. And it’s equally true at big state schools and small, academically hoity-toity liberal arts colleges. I worked the annual fund phonathon for my undergraduate school the year we made it to the Division 3 football national championship game for the first time, and it was amazing how eager people who had never given before were to write checks.
I’ve never been convinced that that’s a healthy thing, but it is what it is.

@Tattoosydney: You.Bitch. You have a bachelor’s party, and you don’t invite moi, your fake wife? Harumph.

@asiangrrlMN:
Need a fake divorce lawyer?

Wish me luck….the next time I post here I should be married, should everything go as planned.

Baby blue Beelzebub links to watertiger who links to huffpo who has a story quoting Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network as saying that “most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches.”
To whom do I apply at M&M Mars(bitches!) for the job of saying evil prayers? It sounds like a cushy gig.
Demo Woman
@Punchy: Congrats
demkat620
@Punchy: Good luck Punchy! Just remember to breathe.
demkat620
@MikeJ: I know right? Bet it pays well too.
Goddamn witches get everything.

@Punchy:
Yay, Punchy! I hope everything goes absolutely beautifully for you and that, 50 years from now, you and your wife look back on your wedding day with smiles and good memories.
BTW, if you ever get the chance to see Blondie in concert, GO! It was a phenomenal show, and Debbie Harry looks freaking AMAZING.
I’ll be putting Sam in his Halloween costume later, and will email John a picture of it to post. :)
Demo Woman
@RedKitten:
Did you wear your boots?
Is Cole back in town yet? Lily in costume would be a special treat for this day.

Okay, folks. I survived the winefest last night only slightly worse for the wear (+10!! Holy crap). I just want to send best wishes to Punchy and his bride (?) for a happy life filled with love and contentment. Oh, and to say that garlic chicken sounds like heaven.
Svensker
@Punchy:
Wishing you luck. A festivities! And sparklers! And congrats!

@Punchy:
Enjoy the day, and have a long and loving life together.

@Demo Woman: Nah — I waffled back and forth for awhile, and wound up just wearing a casual dress and some comfy heels. The drive back home was great, too — my throat was sore from cheering, so we stopped at McDonald’s for a thick shake. I hadn’t had one of those in years and years, so it was a delightful treat.
On the way back, the cops were doing spot checks for drunk drivers, up-to-date registrations, and driver’s licenses. So this (rather attractive, young) cop asks to see my license, examines it, and says “Looks good!” I gave him a big smile and said, “Why, THANK you!” He turned about 40 shades of pink, which was quite entertaining.
Demo Woman
@RedKitten: Sounds like fun. Hopefully Sam slept peacefully during the night.

@Zuzu
I have a brand new juicer just waiting for some good recipes so I think I will try it. I totally need some cleansing for my innards. Thanks!
Right after, of course, that yummy garlic chicken recipe! MMMM! I could take a bath in garlic and be happy. Will it keep all the goblins away, you think?
Shell
Wow, a lot of Halloween weddings today.
Zuzu's Petals
@MysticalChick:
Have fun !
It’s nice that I’m doing smoothies as well as juice. Adds the fiber, is more filling. And I’m still getting the “cleanse.”
asiangrrlMN
@burnspbesq: YES!
@Punchy: Congrats, Punchy! Good luck! Kiss the bride for us!
