I love that picture.
When does it start?
Oh and if I didn’t mention it: Dad was in the hospital for a couple days. He had severe tachycardia seemingly out of nowhere. We sent him to the worst hospital in the area so they just kicked him back home. He seems okay but we’re watching him.
TaMara (HFG)
@Yutsano: Any chance he got a covid test while he was there? Because tachycardia seems to be one of the symptoms for some.
Llelldorin
Looks like they’ve started a new 30m countdown, so.. a bit after 3pm EDT/noon PDT?
TaMara (HFG)
@Llelldorin: I’ve now updated the post to reflect that. Thanks.
waspuppet
Sorry; I can’t watch because I’m far too busy finishing up my “Why is Biden hiding in his bunker and not out there campaigning or releasing plans?” piece.
If Trump tweets about it, I’ll be sure to quote him. I’m not COMPLETELY out of the loop, after all.

@TaMara (HFG):
Thanks for this post, TaMara. I turned on MSNBC and waiting with anticipation.
dmsilev
@waspuppet: Very insightful. I trust we can see you expound on these views every Sunday morning on TV?
TaMara (HFG)
@pamelabrown53: Oh, good, they’re going to show it? Because I really need to lie down, get away from the computer and rest a bit.
Chyron HR
Postponed?? Bernie’s campaign staff were right, Biden is secretly dead!
Yutsano
It’s 1500 EDT. No stream yet. Guessing technical issues.

Peter Navarro is pissed because he had a Buy America proposal 3 months ago and Jared has it on hold. Insert Nelson Laugh
That picture is awesome.
dmsilev
@Yutsano: It’s live now.
pamelabrown53
@TaMara (HFG):
Yep! MSNBC has had it on their breaking news bottom screen. So far,both CNN and MSNBC have carried Biden’s speeches live. I like being able to step away from the computer and watch it on my big screen (while reclining)!
P.S. Hope you’re getting much needed rest and feel your energy returning.
P.S.S. FYI, apropos to nothing significant, my grand-daughter’s name is Penelope.
SiubhanDuinne
Just started. MSNBC is carrying it live.
Yutsano
@dmsilev: Yep! Watching! He’s talking about his hometown roots right now.
EDIT: the ASL translator is very emphatic. It’s a joy to watch.
germy
@Yutsano: He’s on right now. Only five minutes late.
Trump is usually much later. Trump is the mick jagger of politics.
Yutsano
“Not just created, but entitled, to being treated equally. ”
Oh he’s gonna get flak from the Republicans for that! But I like it.
pamelabrown53
Okay, so far I love what he’s saying, although I’m a little distracted by the echo. Really, really hope he talks about a safe, return to school plan.
dmsilev
I disagree with Biden. In addition to incompetence, malevolence is also a possible explanation.
pamelabrown53
@pamelabrown53:
“Trump has simply given up”. Stressing incompetence, incompetence, incompetence and touting his experience of handling the disbursements of $$$ (with oversight) during the financial crisis.
Sounding super populist without the racist dog-whistles.
Yutsano
@pamelabrown53: I love the emphasis on unions and how we built the country not Wall Street.
EDIT: he’s going after big corps. Every one of them is going to pay taxes. The Republicans are going to seize on this as “HE’LL RAISE YOUR TAXES!!!” but it’s not going to work if we counter with what he actually said. But they have their talking point. We need to be ready.
pamelabrown53
@Yutsano:
end “shareholder capitalism”!
dmsilev
Shareholder value isn’t everything.
I believe the entire staff of Fox News just had a collective apoplectic fit. Good.
cain
@dmsilev:
Hey they agree somewhat – it’s not just about shareholder value, it’s also the grift value.
pamelabrown53
@dmsilev:
I’m sure there’s some confusion at FOX because he’s highlighting WC populism without the “white” part while emphasizing areas we need to engage globally.
Roger Moore
@cain:
Shareholder value is just an excuse. The real thing companies are after is CEO compensation.
Yutsano
@pamelabrown53:I heard that one! I’m really liking how this speech is going so far. Nothing on schools yet but he’s attacking Drumpf on ignoring Covid. But that led into a segue on climate change that was a bit awkward. Let’s see where he goes. He’s on child care right now.
EDIT: oh man. He actually hit every single mom with a story about him and his two boys while he was Senator and how tough it was. He just told all of them HE GETS IT.
cain
CEO and their cronies – other executives. It’s amazing in the past 30-40 years how much CEO compensation have gone up but worker compensation have not.
I don’t know what’s soooo special about CEOs that we have to bankrupt the company to pay them even when they fail. It’s kind of a mirror of the “unitary executive” principle.
BTW why is the sound so bad on this?
SiubhanDuinne
@Yutsano:
He does. The contrast with Trump couldn’t be more pointed.
Mallard Filmore
Since this was brought up when Trump speaks from a podium, I am watching how Mr Biden uses his arms. Trump mostly keeps his left arm/hand on the podium and lets go for grand gestures.
Biden uses both arms easily and at about the same rate.
cain
I’m not interested in coming together – been there – done that. I’m ready for the witch hunt, prison sending journey – that’s how we come together – jail the fuck out of Republican grifters and traitors.
pamelabrown53
@Yutsano:
I love how he’s integrating workers concerns with our global concerns.
Doesn’t look like he’s going to unveil a COVID opening the schools plan. Hopefully, enough of us will offer the feedback that will propel him to an “education only” plan.
This speech is more general and I’m not only okay with that; I’m impressed with his love, empathy and inclusiveness.
Jeffro
@cain: seeeecccccconded here!
pamelabrown53
@cain:
JFC, Biden’s speech isn’t about your hatred. It’s about presenting a positive vision of both Americans and America as striving to appeal to our better angels.
Leto
@Yutsano: It’s because he does get it. He’s been through all the same shit as the rest of us, he just happened to be serving in one of the highest offices of the land. Plus he has the empathy/humanity to recognize the toll it takes to keep moving forward because that’s the only thing you can do. It comes through and it’s part of the reason he’s doing so well.
Hey, thinking about you and your dad. Posi-vibes heading your way :)
Yutsano
@pamelabrown53: The whole speech was meant to be a contrast with Dolt45. He started with Scranton stories (I believe he was there from a couple things he said) and throughout he woyld drop personal anecdotes from his time as Senator and Vice President that detailed how he managed to stay connected with the people. Not the corporations, not the oligarchs, but the actual people of the US. But the single dad story really hit me. He really should bring that up more.
SiubhanDuinne
@cain:
That’s not for a campaign, though. That’s for first thing the morning of January 21, 2021.
Ella in New Mexico
@Yutsano: that happened to my 83 year-old mom last year, and it turned out that she had been having what’s called paroxysmal tachycardia and atrial fibrillation intermittently for the past year or so, just never saw anyone for it.
The underlying culprit was an elevated thyroid level (she’d been taking too high of a dose) and also, she was using energy drinks because she felt so tired all the time”.
Because of the hormone aspect, It took us a while to straighten things out and she had quite a few repeat afib episodes causing her enough chest pain she was hospitalized before it was all over. She also didn’t tolerate her blood thinner and had a small GI bleed requiring transfusion to correct. Now she’s on antiarrhythmic meds and aspirin, and a much lower dose of thyroid meds and seems to have stabilized. I’m really not so sure that at some point she didn’t have a small stroke from the episodes of afib because she is definitely not the same cognitively as she was before this all started.
Lesson in all of it: find out the underlying reason he had the symptoms, because it could turn into something more serious like Afib, which if not corrected quickly, can snowball and become a chronic condition
@TaMara (HFG): yes, you’re absolutely right! Cardiac symptoms out of the blue can be an atypical COVID-19 presentation.
mrmoshpotato
@cain:
A thousand percent with you on that, cain. None of this “moving on” bullshit that let the Bush regime off the hook and let the Rethuglicans get away with murder.
ETA – ok fine, not for the campaign, but come January 20th’s afternoon…
Leto
@Mallard Filmore: One of the things that the Air Force Basic Military Instructor course teaches you is limiting non-verbal distractions. Teaching people how to use body movement in a natural way as to not distract from the message you’re trying to present. Biden would get a good grade in that column. Trumpov… well everything that he does (hanging on the podium, crazy arm movements, sitting with his arms crossed looking like he has to shit himself…) is just failure.
Kay
It doesn’t get covered but Biden has a school reopening plan.
Democrats more broadly have been working on this for months in the US House.
There’s been no coverage of it so I don’t blame people for not knowing but I have been following this and am (obviously) interested in it and Democrats have done a really solid job on that score- I have no complaints.
I had hoped they would get ahead of Trump in only one way- media attention to their plans. I have no issues with their work on it, either the quantity of the quality.
Their plans are in-line with the better states and district plans but there’s a different focus. They won’t be specific and rule-bound because they have very limited power over schools- what they CAN do is fund and they are attempting to do that. Republicans in the US Senate are blocking it.

@Leto:
Yes, exactly. The Shitgibbon is used to tv, where they can edit out the crazy, or expounding endlessly while acting out the “good” parts in the privacy of his office where his minions obediently laugh at all his “jokes.”
Yutsano
@Leto: Thanks. He seems to be doing well right now but we’re watching him. Something like that doesn’t come out of nowhere. And someone asked earlier but it’s definitely not Covid related. He almost never leaves the ranch and the rare times he does he’s masked. He also has no other symptoms and I don’t think he was tested because of that.
The more I hear from Biden the more I thank black women. They sure picked the right hoss for this race!
pamelabrown53
@Kay:
Thank you, thank you, Kay. You’re a treasure. I’m hoping Biden does a separate address on schools re-opening and I hope it’s next week.
Another Scott
@Kay: The linky:
https://joebiden.com/reopening/
Scroll down to “Reopen Schools and Child Care Programs:”
It’s good, as far as it goes, but the timeline is too short to implement those things in a meaningful way (especially with Donnie and Mikey in charge) for this fall.
Cheers,
Scott.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@pamelabrown53: also, I know to some extent people are just wishfully venting, but the odds of anyone, at least anyone whose name we recognize, going to jail are probably pretty slim. The first step shouldn’t come from the executive, it should come from Congress, a full on investigation that will turn up facts, then those facts might lead to evidence of criminal offense.
I don’t want to listen to another four or eight years of the Biden version of “Obama didn’t even put any banksters in jail!”

@Leto:
Same with the IRS instructor course. I can’t do that. I’m Jewish, we talk with our hands. It’s funny how my evaluators think that it’s not distracting but the way I do it it enhances the instruction experience. It’s just my style.
pamelabrown53
@mrmoshpotato:
It’s NOT “phony coming together”. It’s a clarion call for Americans to shed their selfishness, grievances and vitriol to uphold the ideal of America before it’s too late.
Kay
@pamelabrown53:
The group of congressional Democrats who focus on schools are quite good. Biden’s approach runs thru Title 1, which is the federal program for lower income students – who will be harmed the most by schools being closed. What DeVos has been trying to do her whole tenure is change how funds are allocated- detach them from income and demographics and she has pursued that with emergency covid funding. That’s (roughly- it’s complicated) why 5 states are right now suing her:
Martin
As a fan of communist propaganda art, that Biden poster makes me pucker a bit. I know it’s Mt Suribachi, but it’s got a bit of a ‘we will crush the imperialists by growing wheat’ vibe to it. That aside, I love the sentiment being expressed by it. I love the fact that we can now lead campaign materials with someone in a hijab or a pride shirt, and not just signal silently that we’re with them, but let’s not say that too loudly lest the white people hear.
Honus
@germy: you mean Sly Stone. I know, I was there back in the day. Mick is a pro, usually right on time. He even came back on to finish his show in Charlottesville an hour after it was interrupted by a bomb threat.
Honus
@Martin: I’ll take a little socialist-realist art over the confederate flag waving of the other side.
Ella in New Mexico
OMG the artwork in that poster above was so inspirational I ordered 3 yard signs just now.
His other stuff is fantastic and very in your face on important issues, too.
dmsilev
@Martin: At my previous school, there was one building which had a statue of the donors (husband and wife) who paid for the thing, ostensibly welcoming people in to their namesake building, but the style of the sculpture really had a “People’s #4 Tractor Factory of Greater Smolensk” vibe to it. I can’t even remember who the donors were, but I figure I’m on safe ground assuming that they were/are fully paid-up capitalist running dogs.
cain
co-signed on that. Feed them the unity story – but after that….
Roger Moore
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
I think there’s one big thing the executive can do to help matters along: appoint some Inspectors General who are dedicated to rooting out corruption. Once it’s clear the IGs are really going to go after Trump-era corruption, you’ll be amazed at all the stuff long-term staff have kept.
Leto
@geg6: His past couple of Klan rallies, he’s essentially had multiple Jeb Bush moments: please clap… he’s been that low energy! (Jeebus, I feel dirty for even writing those words together…)
@Yutsano: I was the same way! The amount of re-education I had to go through, to learn to keep my hands down by my side… lets just say that I had multiple comments of, “Overall did very well, but remember natural arm movements” on a number of evals! I got it under control but man, when I moved to Italy??? I FOUND MY PEOPLE!!!! :)
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: If the time frame to implement the plan is too short, that is not necessarily the fault of the plan. If there’s not enough time to do what would make it safe, there is simply not enough time.
One zillion dollars tomorrow will not make school safe for August
edit: I’m not saying you don’t know those things, just sharing my thoughts after reading your comment.
Roger Moore
@Martin:
I kind of wish they had included a straight white woman or something just to show that the Democrats actually do have support from straight white Christians. And it would be subtle, but a flag with 52 stars would be nice, too.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Roger Moore: good point, I just start fearing deja vu all over again when I think about not just Mueller, but the Fitzgerald/Rove/Libby case before him. Get facts, make them public, then start talking about criminal prosecution.
BruceFromOhio
That Biden graphic – there’s only one white guy, and he’s presented wearing Gay Pride colors! How can the Biden campaign so willfully abandon the snowflake nationalist homophobe white dude of ever-present racist privilege vote?? Cut to the interview of a Trump voter to get a reaction in three … two …
@waspuppet: oooh, I like yours better.
cain
I agree!
BruceFromOhio
@cain: gotta the horse and cart lined up first, then comes the guillotines. Patience, young paduan.
mrmoshpotato
@pamelabrown53:
Never said that, or anything close to that.
Fine. GOP and 2016 3rd-party and non-working, selfish children first.
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
Fuck over the vast majority of the people in this country for 40+ fucking years and then want compromise? Fucking crush them with our ballots.
Marcopolo
@dmsilev: Did the statue look at all like this? Several photos in the article.
Melania Trump statue set on fire in Slovenia

@Leto:
LOL! I’ve stopped using the word “fake” to refer to imitation things, etc.
Roger Moore
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
I absolutely agree: facts first, prosecution after. Nothing will look worse than promising prosecutions that aren’t supported by available facts. But any search for facts will go a lot better once there are people on the inside dedicated to getting the facts out, and that means getting a good bunch of IGs on the job.
cain
@mrmoshpotato:
You notice that it’s always Democrats who have to be doing the ‘unifying’. Where was the unity when Trump took over? Meanwhile – unity after 2000 elections, unity after 2008 etc etc. Maybe not conservative folks, but the GOP politicians depend on us doing the forgive and forget routine – the entire schtick depends on that behavior.
A campaign should be aspirational, and my comments above is just my personal conviction that I have expectations once that there is a Democratic congress and President that the last 4 years of clear law breaking and sedition is properly investigated and the light is shed on what has happened and that all legal avenues are pursued – otherwise the clarrion unity call will simply be used against us to bury past misdeeds.
More than that, the nations of the world – our allies will be watching – and if we want to be a trusted partner in their eyes we need to pursue this because our reputation is at stake.
mrmoshpotato
@mrmoshpotato: *non-voting, selfish children
Oh autoincorrect!
cain
Right wing media/circus is going to go nuts and well we start investigating them too because we know the grift machine is all corrupted. I expect a shakedown of low level people to get to the higher level people just like we take down a mob. Church leaders, foreign agitators, militias.. there are a lot out there.
Coming down hard on Russia will also be part of job #1. It needs to be vindictive.
cain
Promising investigations though is exactly what we are all looking for – and it needs to be “by the book” – independent prosecutors, courts etc. We clean up our own party too. That’s real unity :)
mrmoshpotato
@cain:
I have eyes, ears and a functioning brain. :)
You didn’t find Dump’s American Carnage speech unifying? /s
Oooooh yeah. Biden and his VP will have to have an Apologize-for-Dump tour.
Patricia Kayden
Roger Moore
@cain:
I think the best way to keep the media circus under control is to have the investigations be low key. This is another reason I like the idea of giving a lot of the job to the IGs. They’re used to doing investigations quietly in the background and only coming forward when they actually find something, which is exactly what we want. It’s much easier for the Republicans to fight this kind of thing one fact at a time rather than being confronted with a complete case.
WaterGirl
@Marcopolo: If someone carved a statue of me, and it looked like that, I would set it on fire myself!
Kay
The two men are around the same age but Biden can progress and Trump cannot. Trump was wholly insulated, really, because he never had a competitive job before this one so he could remain in, say, 1976, and just never grow at all. It’s a luxury that almost no one has- never learning anything.
Calouste
@mrmoshpotato: I wonder what Biden’s answer is going to be when say Merkel asks him what is going to happen so the US doesn’t elect shitgibbon 2.0 in 2024.
Because it is clear to the rest of the world that you can’t trust the US further than the next elections.
Kay
That’s the fight that’s been going on for months. It is not, actually, “the federal government” that is not doing anything to open schools. It is specifically and exclusively the Trump Administration and Republicans in the Senate.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Calouste: “Und so, whattaya got about trump and Deutschbank? just have somebody leave a folder on a park bench in Zurich at exactly 15:20 on 22 July. Danke schon, my darling….” (he’s Joe, he’d end that way) //
or just freaking leak it do Der Spiegel already. //
Marcopolo
@WaterGirl: Yeah. I actually should have linked to the BBC article about this, it included a separate photo of a statue of Trump also constructed in Slovenia.
That statue was torched in January!
mrmoshpotato
@Calouste: Good question. Ugh.
Yutsano
@cain:
Republicans do not care about unity. Republicans only care that they can dominate everyone now. Unity is having Democrats bend the knee and offer only token opposition that can be safely ignored. Republicans only care about their voters. Everyone else is completely unimportant.
WaterGirl
@Marcopolo: Oh my god, that statue of Trump looks like a King on a deck of cards.
