Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

You cannot shame the shameless.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

The Oklahoma Ruling

HBO’s Watchmen ended up UNDERSELLING Eastern Oklahoma as the setting where America’s numerous simmering social conflicts would come to a head at the turn of the 2020s. https://t.co/KgQVnfcDwT

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) July 9, 2020

Breaking News: The Supreme Court ruled that much of eastern Oklahoma is an Indian reservation, preventing the state from prosecuting Native Americans there https://t.co/nSpkspLWYW

— The New York Times (@nytimes) July 9, 2020

…It was written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Westerner who has sided with tribes in previous cases and joined the court’s more liberal members”
So good to see Tribes winning at SCOTUS (+ over Trump’s opposition, Admin filed a brief+argued against Tribes)https://t.co/0of6azUfGP

— Neal Katyal (@neal_katyal) July 9, 2020

This was written by Neil Gorusch in this morning’s 5-4 ruling in McGirt v Oklahoma and this SCOTUS is weirder and more interesting in its judgements than I think most people would have guessed pic.twitter.com/7Ms1MLKuCi

— Hayes Brown (@HayesBrown) July 9, 2020

Justices rule swath of Oklahoma remains tribal reservation

And luckily Jackson is dead because if he wasn’t he’d challenge Gorusch to a duel.

— Tom Maher (@BoyDharma) July 9, 2020

The persistent theme of Gorsuch’s Indian jurisprudence is (1) empathy for tribes screwed over by the government, and (2) an insistence on holding the government to its treaties and (broken) promises. Here’s the beginning and ending of his opinion today. https://t.co/8tlfo2uafh pic.twitter.com/8RuDtuNfca

=============

“After a century of #Oklahoma not following our treaty rights, the Supreme Court said no more.”

To learn why #McGirt is so important, listen to all eight episodes of “This Land,” the groundbreaking podcast by Rebecca Nagle (Cherokee). @rebeccanagle #ThisLand #HonorTheTreaties https://t.co/4dSPRRgG9t

IT’S HERE!

The U.S. Supreme Court has narrowly sided with Indian Country in one of the most consequential cases in recent history.#McGirt #HonorTheTreatieshttps://t.co/zxZ89lSdzR pic.twitter.com/c2oR51rdG8

— indianz.com (@indianz) July 9, 2020

mcgirt, who won today, won the right to be retried for child molestation in federal court instead of oklahoma state court. nobody in the creek tribe gets any land back and if congress wanted to it could reverse this decision tomorrow by formally abrogating the treaty.

— Sigh Hersh, Hostile Witness (@Ugarles) July 9, 2020

==============

Neil Gorsuch & the four liberal Justices just gave away half of Oklahoma, literally.

Manhattan is next. https://t.co/Ic9gqqznJp

— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) July 9, 2020

It’s called honoring a treaty, but I wouldn’t expect you to understand honor.

— csd (@csd) July 9, 2020

Maybe Oklahoma should have respected the treaty the USA signed with the Creek tribe instead of trying to pretend it doesn’t exist?

— Pé (@4everNeverTrump) July 9, 2020

I’m not a highfallutin’ lawyer & such, but seems to me that that Manhattan deal being 150 years before there was a United States complicates fine senator’s hyperbole. https://t.co/qJ07XAozor

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) July 9, 2020

ted are you workshopping your parler material on twitter again by turning a big dial that says RACISM and looking back at the audience https://t.co/7IkboHI2zV

— kilgore trout, suburban female understander (@KT_So_It_Goes) July 9, 2020

Someday I’d like to see a definitive break down on the faux stupid populists of the Republican Party and the actually stupid populists of the Republican Party. https://t.co/GCPsYwGg5V

@Baud:  My guess is that the wrong button was pressed.

I still enjoyed reading the post though.

Does this mean we can smoke marijuana in Muscogee?
    @Baud:
I was wondering the same thing.
