Via commentor RikyRah, because this thread does indeed deserve wide circulation:
Just spent the last 2 hours phone banking here in Texas. I called a grandmother. She’s 91. Black. She answered so sweet. I told her who I was, and asked if she was registered to vote for November. She said YES MAAM! I said, “wonderful. I hope we can expect your support…”

“baby, I’m overjoyed. Look at God.” I told her I’ve been emotional all afternoon thinking about my slave great great grandparents, and how I wish they knew it would get better. She told me about her days picking cotton, and about her scarred hands.

She talked about her grandfather being lynched. She told me she hoped Kamala had the best security. She’s afraid someone will try to hurt her. We prayed again.
Before we hung up she told me to dream bigger than my last dream. I promised I would.
Thank you Mrs Ethel. ❤️

@Cheryl Rofer: That’s a lot of money. Just for context, the Biden campaign plus the DNC reported raising $140 million in the entire month of July. To do a bit over a third of that in two days…

Wikipedia biography doesn’t say so explicitly, but suggests that Harris has trial experience. Which makes sense, she can make a case, and put it over like a tsunami.
Also, from Wikipedia, I didn’t know how much wrangling she had to do working up through the Godzilla style brutally grotesque jungle of local San Francisco politics. And she did so without any outrageous and grotesque shit in her record, which is quite an accomplishment. She can handle herself, must have awesome situational awareness.

@Jeffro: Well, OK, then. That inspired me for some reason to look up what Cardi B is up to. She might be on board.
Cardi B says she’s spoken to Joe Biden and told him “we don’t want no false promises”
“What I’m saying is that I know him,” she continued. “I always felt like Biden balanced Obama because I thought he was conservative and that’s what swayed the conservative votes, the ones in the middle. Knowing him and everything, I think he’s getting it and I think he understands the people’s pain. He’s getting what we want. People think we want so much, but we want really simple things if you really think about it.”
Cardi said she told the former vice president that he should listen to the people’s demands: “I tried to let him know like, listen we don’t want no false promises. We don’t want no fake shit to get people voting. This is what we want. Please make it happen.”

Adam L Silverman
@jl: She handled sexual assaults, rape, and child abuse cases. Those were her specialties as a prosecutor before she ran for DA and became as much of an elected administrator as a prosecutor. Also, she was so opposed to the death penalty, which everyone said would keep her from being elected DA, that when a capitol murder case of a child happened, despite overwhelming pressure, including from the liberal portions of the community, she still refused to put the death penalty on the table as part of the prosecution.

@frosty: iTunes is not moribund. What they did was separate out iTunes from movies and TV in the app on your desktop or laptop. So all iTunes does now is manage the music. I just thought of the word to describe what she adds to the ticket: ‘vitality’.
jl
@Punchy: I hope the GOTV people are planning. Vote as early as possible, get as many people out to vote in person for whom it is safe. I wouldn’t worry about public health so much just for one day. If Trump is re-elected, covid-19 and who knows what else will kill more people over next four years than standing in line outside for one day will. And if elected, Biden-Harris with competent experts can get the covid-19 job done in a few months, vaccine or no vaccine.
Standing in line for voting will be mostly outside, Democrats will wear masks, secret ballot means infrastructure at polling place more or less consistent with 6 foot social distancing. If serious chronic disease, or over 40, maybe not. Me, I’ve decided to vote in person.
A possible twist is that I’ve read some GOPers, especially from western half of US are worried that Trump’s criminal sabotage may hurt GOP in some swing states more than Dems. Apparently a lot of GOPers in rural areas rely heavily on vote by mail. I mean, it’s not like Trump knows much about how things work.
But regardless, disgusting criminal plot by Trumpsters, and I’m glad they are so blatant about it so early. We have only ourselves to blame if we can’t figure out an effective response. And… armies of lawyers….
Sab
@Adam L Silverman: In my town there would not even be a position for prosecutor handling sexual assault. Bury it under the rug.
They finally were compelled by courts to process rape kits, and discovered that there were 25 extremely active sexual preadators out there. Word on the street for years had been that Akron doesn’t prosecute.
Always wondered why I was jumpier about rape than my two sisters who live in other states.
FlyingToaster
@frosty: I still buy CDs, usually (alas) from Amazon.
It’s easier for us to use the iTunes app on our laptops and sync playlists for the devices (iPhones/iPads/iPods) if we just digitize the discs ourselves.
Adam L Silverman
@Sab: All of the empirical evidence we have in criminology, from every study done, clearly indicates that there is absolutely no deterrent effect from actually using the death penalty. More executions have absolutely not positive correlation with the murder rate. And this includes the comparative studies between US states, so when you control for the difference in population sizes between a large state like Texas that does use the death penalty and a small state that doesn’t, still no positive correlation between using it and deterring murders in specific and crime in general.
This is obviously different from the moral/ethical just deserts argument that some actions warrant and deserve some responses/punishments.
different-church-lady
@Adam L Silverman:
Which is how it always should have been. Using it as a way to sync a phone was always idiotic, and implemented about as poorly as possible.
That being said, it’s amazing Apple let the “iTunes is dead” thing get so out of hand.

@NotMax: I saw it the day it was reported. There have been rumors for months that something was up. Frankly, I’m still unclear whether this was just the AT&T suits not understanding that DC Comics, in terms of comics publishing, is a loss leader that protects the IP so they can make much much more money from TV, movies, cartoons for TV, and cartoon movies, as well as other merchandise or what they’ve done is cleared out a layer of administrative deadwood that let them get rid of Harras, who has been accused of a number of sexual improprieties, as well as some of the people he’d been protecting who were also doing dodgy stuff. Or some combination of the two. From what I can tell, they’re not getting rid of talent. They’re not going to stop producing individual issues, omnibus issues/graphic novels, or having them set up for digital download. I think this does indicate that DC Universe will be rolled into HBOMax, but they so botched that rollout because they rushed it, that I expect DC Universe will survive a while longer. As you can imaging the comment threads at places like iO9 and the comic book sites have been especially unique since the news broke.
Sab
@Adam L Silverman: That’s what I thought. Death penalty kills random murderers, but deters no one.

I’m going to miss Kamala as my Senator. She’ll help the ticket though. And it’ll help her get to the next level. I think it’ll work out. Just seeing how it is frying righties heads says it was a great move.
Adam L Silverman
@Sab: Most people don’t realize just how hard it it to get those types of crimes prosecuted. Some of it is law enforcement and prosecutor culture. Some of it is it takes special types of people, both as cops and as prosecutors, to be willing to do the work. Some of it is in the nature of the crimes and how those who are the victims respond to the trauma. Some of it is that the law and how it is applied and understood by judges at all levels just haven’t caught up to reality.

Here in MN early in person voting opens 46 days before Nov 3. So it should be fairly easy for many people to distance, take their time, and have the satisfaction of their ballot being processed by live election judges and locked up for safekeeping till counting day.

Me too.
Every CD I possess is, in effect, a license to legally rip into other media, and to make a backup copy for my own use .
Which I do as needed. I have a couple thousand CDs ripped into a lossless format on a USB disk, and a backup copy on another USB disk, and I downconvert to MPwhatever or Apple lossless for whichever device or software I want to load up.
Tedious. But my music collection doesn’t go away if I fail to pay a streaming service, nor is it encumbered by revocable DRM that might expire with the company that imposed it, nor is it likely to be made obsolete by format or technology changes.
And my kids can inherit it. My son will want the classical, and my granddaughters will want the soul music.
Sadly, none of them will be interested in the jazz.

Trump is going to steal the election, we’ll only get crappy fake vaccines that don’t work, and we’re going to be under COVID death watch forever, even after the rest of the world is recovered. We will be a sealed-off plague kingdom ruled by the infinite Trump dynasty, like a big sick North Korea.

@jl: I requested mail ballots but the way things are going, I think I’m actually going to do in-person early voting, like I did in 2016 and 2018. COVID-land means my schedule is flexible, but in my experience, the early voting stations are practically deserted when I go.
But the Postal Service situation has me really bummed. I think COVID-19 + tearing down the USPS basically means we’re checkmated; I don’t think we can get our voters out. Trump’s voters are idiots who think they’re immune, so he wins.

@Sab:
My own argument for opposing the death penalty (very much a minority position where I am!) is that, besides failing to deter other murderers, besides failing to restore the status quo ante, i.e. life to the victim, it is murder committed by the state. I don’t want any state I belong to to be a murderer.
WereBear
@joel hanes: Mr WereBear and I merged a serious collection, and now that I don’t commute in the car, and cars don’t even come with players any more, we need to look into a player for home.
But then, I am fond of Pandora, and so are my cats. RJ programed his own channel:

My god, she’s perfect. I did not support her in the primary and never fathomed the synergy of these two. I even dabbled in Bloomberg for a couple weeks in January (to my eternal shame). But this rollout is making me realize how much I love and respect Kamala!! I’m so proud to be an American and a Democrat.
Steeplejack
What the hell is Andrea Mitchell doing on Morning Joe?! This is way before her decryption time.
Steeplejack
@Steeplejack:
Screw it, I don’t want to wait around to find out. Gonna try to get some sleep.

Redacted.

More of that sweet, sweet racism from Trump.

As usual, I’m the turd in the punch bowl.
The Biden-Harris ticket is a great ticket. But right now Trump and DeJoy are working hard to destroy the USPS, and the one Dem-controlled part of our government, the House of Representatives, is in the middle of a long vacation.
They’re making it hard to be proud to be a Democrat.
“But what can they do?” you ask. They can hold hearings. If DeJoy won’t show, they can take the testimony of outside witnesses and experts, showing the actual and potential effects of what DeJoy is doing. (My wife can testify – she’s suddenly been getting ‘undeliverable as addressed’ returns from verified addresses.) And of course, they could tell DeJoy that he shows up, or gets impeached.
“There goes ltc again, going on about impeachment,” you say. Well, if the Trump Administration consistently goes well beyond the norms, maybe the Democratic response should too? And again, I say it’s smart politics to get all the GOP Congresscritters on record as supporting the dismantling of the USPS. If the Dems can’t make good attack ads out of that, then we need better Democrats.

@Steeplejack: I don’t know but Mika is fucking hysterical.
Geminid
@Kent: There are 60 freshman Democratic representatives. None are as well known as AOC, but that is not because they don’t bring as much or more to the table as she does. If Tom Perez called me up and told me, “Geminid, you have won our Democratic Voter Outreach Lottery, and get to choose a freshman congressperson to speak at the convention,” I would pick Debra Haaland of New Mexico.

@Patricia Kayden: How is it that didn’t lead the news, oh yeah Kamala.

@raven:
Hysterical like Mel Brooks or hysterical like Q Anon?
Quinerly
@frosty: thread be dead but if you pop back, looks like all of her albums are free to download if you have Amazon Prime.
frosty
@Quinerly: Thanks, my wife has Prime so I’ll look into it.
Professor Bigfoot
@James E Powell: Spotify user here, too; and it’s well worth ten bucks a month to be able to stream literally any album I can think of anytime, anywhere, as well as to get new releases and playlists and no commercials.
I haven’t looked back.
something fabulous
@rikyrah: i love how she closes it again behind her, like a *civilized* baby! ???

@frosty: Also OT but I agree about going back to vinyl. I love that the hipsters are all into vinyl and turntables, etc and I know most of the new vinyl collectors buy remastered high quality records but…
The act of playing a vinyl record with a stylus degrades the recorded media every time you play it. So even the most diligent cleaner of records is still going to introduce dust into the grooves and the diamond tip of the needle is internally scratching the groove, so its a self defeating process. The warmness of records versus the clinical sound of digital music soon evolves to the perpetual cleanliness of digital versus the decaying fidelity (including pops, skips, clicks and increasing muddiness) of vinyl. The first I’d do back in the day was make a cassette recording of the virgin spin. It may be hip to be vinyl fan. But not for me. Never going back.
