Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

We still have time to mess this up!

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

I am waiting to sing along to NaNaNaNa Hey Hey  Goodbye to Orange Dbag on Jan 20th. I think they should have some massive zoom event done early in the morning to send to him and all his enablers  via Twitter in the afternoon. Kind of like the HS graduation deal they did. Just to see that many people is going to needle him.

Can’t really share them (as they were a live thing), but last night I attended the Virtual gala for Blue Heron Renaissance Choir.  A group that specializes in music of the 15th century and earlier. (they are in the middle of recording the works of Ochegeim) Of course they had to do something a little different than their usual fare, especially since they can’t gather in large groups to take on their 5 -7 part polyphonic repertoire .  So they all got to do solo’s or a few duets.  Their choice: Broadway show tunes.

    It was great fun.

Just need to share some awful news. The OC sheriffs shot and killed a homeless black guy here; my troubled teen housemate was friends with him, and is devastated. He bought some flowers to take to the spot and was on the ABC news in LA. There were already protesters there and he was resentful of them, because they wouldn’t have had the time of day for the guy when he was alive. This is so awful. I thought I understood this stuff, but it’s different close to home. Please send light or prayers or whatever you have for our boy

I’m part of a zoom group of guys who meet on Wednesday nights. We’ve been working through a book on white privilege, chapter by chapter. But this week, post-Breonna, we  set the book aside and just checked in. Part of the talk was about arts as a method of self care.
This Brother Ali song was offered up. (He’s a Minneapolis based hip hop artist, started with Rhymesayers Collective). Enjoy.

@Goku (Amerikan Baka): They were using stimulants back in their Hamburg days.  Dylan introduced them to pot and, of course, Dr. Robert gave them LSD.  By today’s standards, their tour schedules were brutal.  They toured every year from 1963 to 1966, and these were international tours: US, UK, Europe, eastern Asia, and Australia.  Harrison probably hated the 1966 tour the most since he got married in early 1966 to Pati Boyd.

Recently stumbled on a new version of an old favorite Cuban song. The one on ytube that I already knew is an impromptu version from the documentary Cuba Feliz. Is that Compay Segundo and a couple other of the Buena Vista Social Club?
    “Lágrimas negras”

The new one is with Bebo Valdés (father of Chucho) and Diego El Cigale, Pacquito D’Rivera sort of on the down-low:

Love – You Set the Scene

Arthur Lee and Love are always good for a pick-me-up, especially “You Set the Scene”.

1967 had a bumper crop of great albums, but over the years I’ve been leaning more and more to the opinion that Forever Changes is the best of the lot.

Pogues – Turkish Song of the Damned

The Pogues are another band that’s always there to make me feel better. “Turkish Song of the Damned” is about the dead returning to drag a man who betrayed them down to hell. This might be considered topical if one were inclined.
