… The suspected source of the outbreak is a student’s father who tested positive for the virus on 10 September – 38 days after returning from Singapore on 4 August.

He had served 21 days in quarantine, during which he had taken nine nucleic acid and serologic tests, all of which were negative, said a report in the state-run Global Times newspaper.

It is not clear if the student’s father was indeed infected overseas, as such a long incubation period is very unusual…

Some 32 virus cases were identified in Xiamen on Monday, with most of them traced back to Putian. According to the Global Times, primary studies suggest the cases are that of the Delta variant.

The cases come ahead of a week-long National Day holiday on 1 October, known as Golden Week that sees millions travel across the country.

The Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which runs for three days, is also set to begin on Sunday.

IIRC (from a link some weeks ago), Betadine as a nasal spray *is* actually being investigated as a weapon against COVID infection. Dilute, buffered iodine is cheap, easy to produce, won’t cause germs to become immune, and is safe to handle — but not to gargle!

It’s also used (like bleach) at very low concentrations to purify water during emergencies, which may have given some covidiots the idea:

    NYS Dept of Health says 143 new cases for 9/12, Monroe County website says 128. Most of the cases over the last week were women in their 20s, followed by women in their 30s. Of the total of 1129 cases 23% were children 0 – 19.
    Still at 1379 deaths.

    I may get my third Covid vaccination today – they are indicating that for people over sixty it makes sense; I guess if they (the pharmacy) say’s yes, I will. Otherwise, I will get the flu shoot but I can’t do both – not because that is an issue in general but I have only one arm I can risk – so it isn’t because mixing might be an issue, per se; however, I suspect mixing might even be beneficial but that is certainly not based on any scientific studies to date. So, if I delay the flu shot I guess I’ll go as per our BJer suggested Oct. 1st or there about.

    I’d like to take this opportunity to make it absolutely clear that no UK Government Minister has physically seen, with their eyes, any complete, ring-bound and properly titled plan to bring Great Britain back under Lockdown over the October school holidays. Therefore, it’s very important to understand that no UK Government Minister can be held responsible for lying to their chums in the Press about the UK Government’s plans when we go back into Lockdown in October, because, as has been made clear, that wasn’t the question any UK Government Minister chose to answer.

    The simple fact that they’ve leaked the story this far in advance is testament to how bad they’re expecting things to get leading up to Winter. Never mind, though, not their fault, is it? They told us all to be ‘careful’, we obviously didn’t listen. Shame on us!

    @Tony Jay: The epidemiological modellers are predicting a Flu Season From Hell this year since we missed out on influenza last year. Couple that with a predicted rise in COVID-19 cases (including some people who will be getting their second or third case) then the NHS is going to get hammered.

    Most new COVID-19 cases in the UK will be “mild” because of vaccination levels and immunity from previous infections but there’s going to be a lot of them, maybe as many as last winter, filling up a lot of hospital beds. Fewer deaths, I can only hope.

    Fujian Province reporter 59 new domestic confirmed (12 previously asymptomatic) & 1 new domestic asymptomatic cases. There currently are 102 active domestic confirmed cases & 21 active domestic asymptomatic cases.

    • Putian reported 24 new domestic confirmed (12 previously asymptomatic) & 1 new domestic asymptomatic cases. There currently are 59 active domestic confirmed cases (40 mild & 19 moderate) & 21 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city, all at Xianyou County, most in Fengting Township. Positive cases include 28 elementary school pupils (w/ at least 17 cases at 1 elementary school, a cluster seeded by the child of the presumed index imported case) & 8 children in kindergarten, as well as at least 17 workers at a shoe factory (a cluster seeded by the wife of the presumed imported index case). Fengting Township at Xianyou County is currently at High Risk & all residential compounds & villages in the township are under lock down. 1 village was elevated to Medium Risk. 4 villages are currently at Medium Risk, all at Xianyou County. Xianyou County has completed the 1st round of mass screening & will commence the 2nd round on 9/14. Putian will conduct city-wide mass screening from 9/14. All residential compounds & villages in the city are under restricted access management.
    • Quanzhou reported 3 new domestic confirmed cases (2 had been fully vaccinated), 1 works at the shoe factory w/ outbreak at Fengting Township, 1 had visited Fengting Township in recent days & a child who had returned from Fengting County w/ family 9/8. There currently are 10 active domestic confirmed cases in the city, 6 of whom work at the shop factory w/ an outbreak at Fengting Township in Putian, & the others have travel history to Fengting Township in Putian. 1 village is currently at Medium Risk.
    • Xiamen reported 32 new domestic confirmed cases (11 mild & 21 moderate), all traced F1/F2 close contacts (coworkers & their families) of the 1st case reported on 9/12 at an arts & crafts factory. The 1st case had traveled from Fengting Township in Putian, & has been established as a close contact of a positive case there. The preliminarily positive case reported on 9/12, a logistics contractor at a local hospital, has been diagnosed as a confirmed case on 9/13. The case had previously tested negative on 9/3, 9/5 & 9/9. By evening of 9/12, 10,355 staff, patients & caretakers at the hospital have been swabbed & 434 environmental samples collected, all have tested negative.  There currently are 33 active domestic confirmed cases (12 mild & 21 moderate) in the city. All residential compounds & villages in the city will go under restricted access management, all non-essential businesses closed, & all schools moved to online instruction. The city has commenced mass screening of all residents from 9/13. 1 zone has been elevated to High Risk.

    Guangzhou in Guangdong Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 3 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city, all associated w/ leak at a quarantine hotel for overseas arrivals.

    Yunnan Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 7 active domestic confirmed & 1 domestic asymptomatic cases there. 1 village in Ruili remains at Medium Risk. 

     

    At Jiangsu Province the remaining 3 domestic confirmed cases have recovered.

    Hunan Province did not reported any new domestic positive cases. 1 domestic confirmed case recovered. There are currently are 53 active domestic confirmed & 1 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province.

    • At Zhuzhou 1 domestic confirmed case recovered. There currently are 5 active domestic confirmed cases.

    Overall in China, 33 confirmed cases recovered (24 imported), 13 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (11 imported) & 17 were reclassified as confirmed cases (12 imported), & 639 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 810 active confirmed cases in the country (606 imported), 4 in serious condition (all imported), 401 active asymptomatic cases (362 imported), 0 suspect cases. 14,601 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.

    As of 9/13, 2,152.52M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 4.4M doses in the past 24 hrs.

    On 9/14, Hong Kong report 2 new positive cases, both imported (from the Philippines & Qatar, both had been fully vaccinated).

    Based on cases reported yesterday, Malaysia’s nationwide Rt is at 0.98.

As of midnight yesterday, the cumulative total is 38,990,335 doses administered: 21,573,348 first doses and 17,480,766 second doses. 66.0% of the population have received their first dose, while 53.5% are now fully vaccinated.

    @Geo Wilcox: My healthcare clients have switched from normal bleach water for disinfecting surfaces to these healthcare-only super-concentrated wipes sold by Clorox that have bleach and other stuff. One of my clients calls them “death wipes” because they absolutely destroy surfaces…. tabletops, upholstered chairs, wood, plastics…… they should use those to make sure they don’t get the Rona!

    Happy to report that the 16 year old in our family who caught Covid at school is much better. Her mother wouldn’t let her get the vax, and her school had masks as optional. She was among the 30 % masking. Brought it home to her 8 month old baby brother, who ended up in the hospital on oxygen. He is home too now.

    Everyone is so far okay, but why the hell put your family through that?

    @Wvng: One possible explanation: The Moderna vaccine uses a much higher dosage than the Pfizer, around 3x as much active ingredient. The disparity has certainly been mentioned as a likely cause for the stronger reactions that people have tended to have to Moderna, and maybe it also helps with longevity of the immune response?

    (I am in no way an expert. Wild amateur speculation)

    Last Saturday I learned that my sister had tested positive for covid. She’s fully vaxxed, and reasonably careful with masking. She’s also quite knowledgeable, having worked as a contact tracer off and on for more than a year, and also having a doctorate in medical anthropology, which is basically epidemiology.

    However, she lives in a small town in intensely red rural WI, with a low vaccination rate, a correspondingly high infection rate, and very few people willing to mask or socially distance. Like a lot of other vaccinated people my sister didn’t resume limiting her activities when the delta surge started to the extent she that had during previous surges. She started wearing masks again but continued to go out with friends, volunteering, going to church, and traveling. Probably most significantly, she joined a gym and worked out without a mask.

    She got her diagnosis within the window that allowed her to get a monoclonal antibody treatment, and so far she’s had a reasonably mild case, just a bad head cold and some mental fuzziness.

    This story will probably end well, but we were a little worried for a while, as my sister is 71 and has underlying lung problems. I’m focusing on her activities not to apportion blame but to harp once again on the fact that people deciding how much risk to take after they’re vaccinated really should weigh heavily the level of community transmission in their locality, certainly at least as much as they think about the statistics for overall risk in the vaccinated.

    Scotland — There were 3,375 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday (Monday) with 21 new reported deaths of someone who had tested. Test positivity rate is 11.4%. ICU bed occupancy numbers are 89, down one from yesterday while hospitalisations are 1,064, up 18.

    There were just under 5,500 vaccinations carried out in Scotland yesterday with about 40% of them being first-doses. This brings the total in the adult (16+) population to 90.9% first-dose and 83.3% fully vaccinated. The first-dose vaccination rate for 16 and 17-year-olds is now 64.6%.

    Information about the planned rollout of vaccines to 12-15 year olds in Scotland is expected imminently as the First Minister is going to be speaking to the Scottish Parliament in a few minutes. It’s likely to involve a single dose of Pfizer vaccine with a decision on a second dose delayed until next year at the earliest. There’s also going to be a booster vaccination program for those over 50 and people at higher risk, a single shot which may accompany the annual influenza vaccination program if the schedules align. This is again likely to be the Pfizer vaccine but it’s not yet clear.

    England – 21,077 (up 1164)

    Northern Ireland – 1199 (up 168)

    Scotland – 4241 (down 1671)

    Wales – 4308 (up 1991).

    Deaths – There were 61 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is an increase of 25.1% in the rolling 7-day average. 32 deaths were in England, 8 in Northern Ireland, 0 in Scotland and 21 in Wales.

    Testing – There were 1,079,196 tests conducted on Sunday, 12 September. This is an increase of 16.9% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity reported by labs on that date was 771,562.

    Hospitalisations – There were 8256 people in hospital and 1055 people on ventilators on Friday, 10 September. As of 7 September, the rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was up by 4.7%.

    Vaccinations – As of Sunday, 12 September, 48,439,272 people had had 1 shot of a vaccine and 44,048,093 had had both. This means that 89.1% of all UK residents aged 16+ had had 1 shot as of that date and 81% were fully vaccinated.

    General – AL has already reported that the government plans to offer 1 shot of vaccine to 12-15 year olds in England. They also plan to start booster shots for the over 50’s and some other vulnerable groups from next week. Other national governments are expected to follow suit. In addition, they have unveiled contingency plans for England during the winter if hospitals begin to be overrun. This involves re-imposing the mask mandate in certain settings, returning to WFH, actually introducing the vaccine passports they shied away from yesterday and, as a final resort, lockdowns. His reference to re-introducing mask mandates (possibly) was jeered by his own backbenchers. What happens in the US Republican Party happens in the UK Conservative Party about five years later and here we have the first signs.

    @Wvng: I certainly had a reaction to the Moderna vaccine – both times! (out for a couple of days with extreme fatigue, some muscle aches, and fever). It wasn’t horrible, kind of like my flu vaccine reactions, but hoping that that means I got a good strong immune reaction going on. (I *really* hope so, because getting that third shot seems extremely unappealing to me for some reason).

    I had a really strong reaction to my second Moderna shot back in March. Slept for two days, was OK, then woke up with total muscular cramps all over my body. Still wake up stiffer than before. Got the third shot at a local Health Department which needed to use up vaccine doses nearing their expiration date.

    No severe reaction to that third shot, much relief to be more resistant to the the TrumpianPlague, though… I hear that local health dept caught a lot of static because the FDA/CDC haven’t approved those third shots.

    I must admit I’m totally disappointed by the FDA and CDC both acting as if their standard operating procedures, added to and made more complex every year since their founding, are still completely appropriate now that we have a real plague going on! At least they had a [ really slow and overly complex ] emergency approval process… but couldn’t speed typical approval even though a hundred miliion people were vaccinated with like 100 dangerous reactions. Just Sad!
