So this is an open thread AND an announcement that CaseyL and Yutsano are going to rendezvous this Saturday in case anyone wants to join them.
From CaseyL and Yutsano:
CaseyL and I are going to be meeting up at Pike Place Market on Saturday the 12th at noon. We’ll be rendezvousing at the fish market where they throw the fish – which is right next to the main entrance. If no one in the area has plans feel free to come join us!
We’ll hang out, wander the market, decide on a food spot (there are lots around there) and probably be done by about 3. No one has any obligation to join us for the whole time.
If you would like to join Yutsano and CaseyL, chime in below or send me an email message and I’ll pass it on.
Otherwise, totally open thread!
WaterGirl
Wordl archive 133 has me totally perplexed.
Dan B
My brother’s birthday dinner is Saturday 7 miles south of Issaquah at 5 PM. This is probably a bit tight but sounds like fun.
Spanky
At who? Whom?
Steve in the ATL
@Spanky: Canadian truck drivers
Kalakal
@Spanky: Avoid the fish markets where they do this

Urza
I might be interested, not sure my plans yet for Saturday.
TheOtherHank
@WaterGirl:
It took me all six turns, but I got it.
WaterGirl
@Spanky: I think there was fish throwing on some TV show or in some movie that I saw. Apparently it’s a thing. All I remember is that it was very dramatic and it had to do with smuggling.
WaterGirl
@TheOtherHank: I walked away from it. Sometimes if i do that it helps a lot.
edit: I am learning that if I really can’t get it that I should widen my thinking to repeat letters.
Almost Retired
Awesome. A Los Angeles meetup would be amazing. We would spend six hours negotiating the location for a one hour event. And then everyone would flake at the last minute. And we’d all be forgiving about that. And we would discuss rescheduling, but everyone would tacitly assume that it won’t really happen, but congratulate ourselves on the effort.
I wasn’t born here, but I’ve gone native.
WaterGirl
@Almost Retired: I always feel bad when people show up but they can’t find the other people.
Baud
BJ Meetup?
Or the start of a convoy?
Almost Retired
@WaterGirl: Maybe we need a Balloon-Juice Grindr-like app, so jackals can identify each other when we are proximate.
Sure Lurkalot
@Almost Retired: And no matter where you are in L.A., your travel time to the not agreed upon location will be exactly and precisely…20 minutes.
CaseyL
Thanks for posting the Maybe* Meetup, Yutsano and WaterGirl!
@Dan B: It would be wonderful to see you!
@WaterGirl: That happened to me, more than once, which is why we try to have something distinctive nearby. In this case, anyone local knows about “the fish place at Pike Market where they throw stuff.” If the Meetup is at a restaurant, we’ll have a balloon or paper lantern or even a sign.
*”Maybe” only because we don’t know who else besides Yutsano and me will be there.
Geminid
@WaterGirl: I saw the other day that you still cannot tell which of the redrawn Illinois Congressional districts you fall in. It might be worth calling your local Democratic party about this. They ought to know. If they don’t, it would be good to give them a nudge. The midterms are less than 10 months away, and those nice new Democratic districts aren’t going to elect Representatives all by themselves.
Mike in NC
Really enjoying a new show called “Reacher” on Amazon Prime.
WaterGirl
@Baud: The message from Yutsano was called, I kid you not:
And I always do what I am told. Okay, I sometimes do what I’m told.WaterGirl
@Mike in NC: How far are you? “some people say” that it’s good until about episode 4. I was about to watch the show when I read that so I will be very interested in hearing what you think of when you get that far.
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Cancel culture has gone too far!
WaterGirl
@Geminid: Good idea. I just wrote to the email the local Democratic party info comes from and asked. We’ll see what they say.
Ohio Mom
@WaterGirl: Just looked at #133. It’s so annoying when I come up with perfectly good words that use the green letters, and it’s still the wrong answer. Once I went through hoist, joist and foist, finally hitting on moist on the last line.
Or is that the magic of Wordle?
Cameron
@WaterGirl: I’ve only seen the first episode. Seems fairly close to the books so far (Reacher isn’t a very nice guy – big on justice, but vigilante-style); and at least the guy looks like Reacher. Tom Cruise didn’t cut it at all in the movie.
WaterGirl
@Ohio Mom: Yeah, that is frustrating. I guess it might help if I knew the relative order of H, J, F, and M in terms of frequency in words, but I don’t. I’m sure it’s online somewhere.
WaterGirl
@Geminid: Wow, they already wrote me back asking for my address, which I just sent them a second ago.
When they write back again I will ask if there are plans to have a lookup on a website at some point.
Abnormal Hiker
@Ohio Mom: in that case try ‘motif’ first
WaterGirl
@Abnormal Hiker: Why motif?
CaseyL
@WaterGirl: A lot of consonants.
Everyone has their own strategy. I try to maximize the vowels on the first try, so I know which ones I have to work with. Then I work through dipthongs (or whatever the proper word is for the Sh, Ch, Fr, Fl, etc., combinations).
SiubhanDuinne
@WaterGirl:
Here:
http://www.rinkworks.com/words/letterfreq.shtml
WaterGirl
@CaseyL: Yeah, I go with vowels at the beginning and then I have a few words that have 4 consonants to help get me there.
MC
Is anyone else following the EARN IT Act? It is a very bad thing.
Mike in NC
@WaterGirl: Just starting episode 2.
WaterGirl
@SiubhanDuinne: Thank you. It does appear that in this example, M is more common than the other 3.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: Here you go.
Abnormal Hiker
@WaterGirl: test for both foist and moist
WaterGirl
@Abnormal Hiker: That’s smart.
Omnes Omnibus
Are Hilzoy and I the last dogmatic wordle resisters?
Dan B
@CaseyL: It would be “interesting” to be seen since we haven’t been to our barber for months. He’s got a tiny room in his house plus he’s got a pacemaker. When I sweat a bit my hair sticks out in a mess.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: I am usually on Team Omnes, but on this one you appear to be on your own. With Hilzoy, of course.
WaterGirl
@Geminid: I remain in IL-13.
At least Rodney Fucking Davis won’t be on my ballot again!

They’re letting Italians into the Hall of Fame – there goes the neighborhood? ?

@Omnes Omnibus: And me
Omnes Omnibus
@Kalakal: Excellent.
Ohio Mom
@MC: Just googled it. My eyes start glazing over when technical subjects like encryption come up. Am I correct in my first impression that this legislation will probably not help exploited children very much but it will entrap internet users who have nothing to do with exploiting children?
I will continue to hold my belief that the main problem with bringing justice to child exploiters is that law enforcement generally is terrible at their job.
David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch
Watching NFL show and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker twice said on air that God helps him kick game winning field goals.
So ridiculous. Everyone knows God only bets on the California Angels.
SiubhanDuinne
@Gin & Tonic:
Oh, yours is a much better LF chart than the one I found!
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Mike in NC: We’ve been watching that too. Mr DAW is a fan of the Lee Child books.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: Wow, I would not have predicted that J would be down at the bottom, hanging out with Q, X, and Z. i like the visual, that’s helpful. thanks.
WaterGirl
@SiubhanDuinne: I appreciated both links, but I think his is easier on the eyes! :-)
Ohio Mom
The thing about my hoist-joist-foist-moist example is that the Wordle WaterGirl complained about, #133, is one of those Wordles where there are at least two good answers, one letter apart. At that point, it isn’t your problem-solving abilities at play, it’s dumb luck.
The main good thing about Wordle is that it ended all the Twitter discussions on the NYT Spelling Bee. By replacing them with grids of colored boxes.
WaterGirl
@Dorothy A. Winsor: Was it Bill Clinton whose favorite author was Lee Childs, or I might be confusing him with someone else.
Whoever it was, I tried reading one of that author’s books and they were most definitely not for me.
Redshift
@WaterGirl: J is eight points in Scrabble, which is a clue to how common it is.
japa21
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: I believe there is a guy named Lombardi already there.
Redshift
I usually start Wordle with “ratio,” which gets me three vowels and two of the most common consonants. It’s worked really well.
Cameron
@WaterGirl: Yes, they can be pretty grim – what makes Reacher heroic isn’t so much that he’s a hero, it’s that the bad guys are worse. You really wouldn’t like John Connolly’s Charlie Parker books and stories.
Cameron
@Redshift: If I’m not feeling sharp, I’ll start with ‘orate.’ That usually works pretty well.
Redshift
I haven’t been around here today, so I don’t know how much discussion there’s been of the latest from the hard-core wingnuts Virginia voters decided saw fit to elect. A deputy attorney general resigned after it came to light that she had posted on Facebook in support is the insurrection. And later that it was Antifa and BLM who were responsible for the violence. And that the Pentagon had evidence that China had interfered in the election. And argued with people at length about every conspiracy theory.
Did I mention that the office she resigned handled election-related matters?
Redshift
@Cameron: Yeah, I’ve thought about switching to that, since it gets you ‘e’. Probably better. I may try it if I break my streak.
ETA: but maybe not, it may be easier to guess where an e goes than an i.
zhena gogolia
@Omnes Omnibus: I did it once. That was enough.
Timill
@Redshift: Remember: RST LNE.
I usually start with AROSE followed by TULIP – all the vowels and missing only N.

@Omnes Omnibus: Et moi aussi. (Pas de dogmatisme; absence de bandwidth.)

@Almost Retired: nailed it.

@WaterGirl:
You could look at the new maps in Dave’s Redistricting App: https://davesredistricting.org/maps#home
Click on Illinois, then click to select the congressional, state senate, or state house map.
In the panel on the left under Overlays you can click to toggle on precinct lines and precinct labels.
Hope that helps.
SiubhanDuinne
@WaterGirl:
I agree!
Spanky
@Omnes Omnibus: I’m also a Wordle objector. Possibly dogmatic, but I’m not going to argue about it.

Well, this is disheartening. A local 4-H club decided that auctioning off a “let’s go Brandon” shirt at their latest Facebook fundraiser was a good idea. 4-H in this region is an outstanding organization and to see Ferndale (although not all that surprising it’s Ferndale) allow this is pretty fucking petty.

@Omnes Omnibus:
No, I’m with you for a change. Seems counter-productive and arbitrary.

Yes… we fired a guy who was downloading porn, burning DVDs and selling them to other employees. The network guys looked into his giant hard drives ( he was supposed to be doing GIS work with giant data sets) and thought there was child porn.
Gave the machine to the city cops, who gave it back later on. Sad!
Don’t believe they could find an image to make their pension.

hotshoe
@Redshift: oh, I like that suggestion.
I’ve had good results always starting with STARE, for a similar reason, most common consonants plus two good vowels.
NYT says that the wordle future choices in its source code is about 2500 words, chosen to be relatively guessable.
But that’s not gonna help when the wordle of the day is “Tapir” ;)
hotshoe
@HumboldtBlue: I’d buy that shirt to burn it in public; I hope it would be possible to burn it on the driveway outside the 4H meeting hall. Show ’em what bullshit it is.

@HumboldtBlue: Disheartening indeed. Before Covid I helped out the Youth department at the Library running summer classes in 3D design for the local 4-H club and I was very impressed by them. Both the kids and their parents were really great and I dropped many points on the curmudgeon scale. It was a really positive experience so it saddens me that that club should be so crass
mrmoshpotato
@HumboldtBlue: Totally.

@Timill: Y is also a vowel.

Ayumu Hirona of Japan deservedly won the gold medal in the men’s snowboarding half pipe but it was his second run that caught the attention of the watching public after commentator Todd Richards called out the judges for what was, in his expert opinion, an abomination of judging.

@ronno2018: Good question! I’ll be the guy in a Wazzu hoodie in a yellow wheelchair. Maybe Casey can finagle a green balloon or two somewhere to tie to my chair?

I’m sorry that we can’t make it. We’d love to see you and everyone else, but we have to hang around to wait for a refrigerator to be delivered.
I’m a little cranky about this. Our “old” one is slowly biting the dust, and we ordered this new one on December 13. That’s really the fastest we could get one that we think will be acceptable.
I don’t want to talk about the price.
CaseyL
@opiejeanne: My house has a drop-in stove. When I redid the kitchen, about 16 years ago, I got a new drop-in stove. I don’t remember what it cost, but around $700 max, I think. Since then, most appliance companies have stopped making them at all, and few who still do want $1400 and up. So my current stove better last for as long as I’m living here!
WaterGirl
@BlueGuitarist: Yay!
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Here’s what I found, but i couldn’t tell which district I would be in from the map so I wrote to the local Dems and asked. They looked me up and gave me my info.

@Omnes Omnibus: I have yet to succumb to the lure of Wordle. The way these things go, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I do…a matter of time with my awareness of All Pop Culture Traditions being, “oh probably 15-20 years from now.”
