So over the weekend, Donnie Douchebag apparently went mental and decided he did not like the Constitution and publicly stated so out loud:
This, of course, will not even be considered disqualifying, and right on cue, here is some fascist bootlicker ready to confirm what we already know:
Joyce initially declined to respond, saying he didn’t know what Trump said on social media and that the public wasn’t “interested in looking backwards.” But Stephanopoulos pressed further, and Joyce ultimately said that Trump’s comment should be taken “in context” but that it wouldn’t prevent him from supporting Trump if he ends up winning the nomination.
“It’s early. I think there’s going to be a lot of people in the primary … [but] I will support whoever the Republican nominee is,” Joyce said while noting he didn’t think Trump would manage to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination because there are “a lot of other good quality candidates out there.”
“That’s a remarkable statement,” Stephanopoulos said. “You just said you’d support a candidate who’s come out for suspending the Constitution.”
Not only will this not be disqualifying, I am betting that in some quarters of the MAGA right, this will be a litmus test.
Republicans treat the constitution like they treat women. It’s there to use to get what you want but when it gets in the way, you just discard it.

Yep. Exactly the same energy.

Republican Governance Group? Lol.
Under what authority would this group govern, once their leader has tossed the Constitution?
Never mind. They have no interest or intention of governing.
Steeplejack
@Hitchhiker:
Also “centrist” LOL.
Yutsano
@Spanky: I’m shocked!
SHOCKED!!!
…
Well not that shocked.
Citizen Alan
@Steeplejack: There are no centrist Republicans. There are no moderate Republicans. It’s fascist, white supremacist death cult, all the way from to bottom.
jonas
Republicans have never believed in democracy and the Constitution. They’ve only ever been a means to an end, namely achieving authoritarian theocracy. The only thing wrong with Iran in their eyes is that the mullahs are the wrong religion.
Trump’s just finally saying — as he has so often — the quiet part out loud.
Kelly
It’s been said many times but Donnie Douchebag wrote terminate the Constitution which Stephanopoulos and a bunch of other press softened to suspend.
different-church-lady
@Sasha: When someone tells you who they are, believe them the
firstnine-hundreth thirty-seventh time they tell you.[GOP: “Naw, screw it, not even then!”]
UncleEbeneezer
I mean this is just saying the Republican quiet parts out loud. They’ve always operated under the premise that the parts of the Constitution that they don’t like, shouldn’t count and that it never should prevent them from having absolute power.
Related:
DeSantis’ lawyers were forced by the court to define “woke.” The lead lawyer described it as “The belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.”
This is what the whole war on CRT and banning of Black, LGBTQ etc. books. They are desperately afraid that their children will wake up to the reality of Systemic Oppression and act to dismantle it. This is also why they don’t want their kids going to liberal colleges.
UncleEbeneezer
@jonas: Exactly.
Omnes Omnibus
What fucking context? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and a fascist is just a fascist.

@UncleEbeneezer: I’m amazed he actually tried to “define” it, instead of just saying that it was very liberal and criminal and quite likely unwhite as well.

Fuck you, you Trump trash shitstains. Get eaten by gators and then vomited back up.

What a load of BS sugarcoating. Trump said Terminate the constitution. Order of magnitude difference.
Wapiti
So have you ever seen a video of a snake swallowing an egg or something bigger than their head – that trick where the jaw joint detaches?
Republicans can do the same trick, when they need to swallow another Republican’s lies, or bullshit, or in this case, a suggestion by a Republican that the US Constitution be terminated. They can swallow all of that. Because they’re like human snakes.

@Grumpy Old Railroader: You obviously never saw Arnold Schwarznegger as The Suspenderator.

Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus:
Also, if Joyce didn’t know what Trump said, how would he know the “context,” or even if there was any?
Mike in NC
GQP motherfuckers will nominate this megalomaniac again in 2024 and we will need to turn out in record numbers to bury him once and for all.

@Omnes Omnibus: The context is that he’ll get primaried out if he goes on record attacking Dear Leader.

Nice try, Trump. Kanye is the chief fascist now.
I initially thought Kanye was nuts when he asked Trump to be his running mate, but now I think it was shrewd.
It’s going to be hilarious when Joyce and Bill Barr and Mike Pence and Chris Christie are forced to admit that they’ll vote for Ye instead of Joe Biden.
different-church-lady

Yeah.
And it will be even funnier when Ye wins.

They use it as a shitty, shallow status marker. When it serves them, they pretend to care about it, and try to shame others as insufficiently American. It’s an attempt at a flex.

Is the oath the Oath Keepers are all about the oath to the Constitution that the military takes? Am I missing something?
Here is Mr. Rhodes in 2008 describing the rationale for the organization “It’ (a full-blown totalitarian police state) cannot happen here if the majority of police and soldiers obey their oaths to defend the Constitution and refuse to enforce the unconstitutional edicts of the ‘Leader’.”[41]

OK, Stephanopoulos did a couple follow ups. But Fail-potus didn’t say he’d ‘suspend’ the Constitution, He said it should be terminated.
I really think there’s something in the wiring of many in the press that they cannot actually hear and read the literal words this man (and many other Republicans) say. It’s ridiculous. Words mean the things people say! Tr**p in particular.
Wyatt Salamanca
As usual, the MSM disgraced themselves by burying this story.
This wasn’t even the third story mentioned during CBS radio’s top of the hour World News Roundup in the early afternoon.
CNN’s Inside Politics didn’t cover Trump’s insane suggestion until the middle of their program following a segment about Biden’s proposal to change the Democratic primary calendar.
Later in the day, I tuned in to NPR’s All Things Considered which led off its broadcast with the proposed change to the Democratic primary calendar. This was followed by a segment about the musical score for the latest film in the Black Panther franchise. At this point, I tuned out of NPR because I don’t give a fuck about some stupid musical score when our goddamn house is still on fire.
Trump is saying the quiet part out loud. He’s proving once again that he’s a clear and present danger to our our republic and our mainstream news outlets don’t give a flying fuck.
What goddamn difference does it make when Iowa and NH residents cast their primary votes if one of the likely nominees openly suggests gutting the Constitution?
cain
They aren’t taking him seriously. A former president of the United States who has announced his candidacy for a 2nd term is demanding to terminate the constitution and his party says nothing.
The scandal is the media and we should be talking nothing about them in every social media outlet.
Mr. Bemused Senior
@Citizen Alan:
There is no bottom.
Amir Khalid
@Kelly:
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a moderate, as Republicans go. I doubt he would support a call to terminate the US Constitution.
More seriously, I was struck by how overtly selfish Trump’s demand is. And how nonsensical: if there is no Constitution, who — if anyone — will have the power to declare him POTUS?
Jackie
@Mike in NC: Oh, we will!!! We weren’t fooled 2020, and we sure won’t be fooled in 2024! I predict another record breaking Democratic voting record.

Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.
Opening a Truth Social page seems like the digital equivalent of sticking your dick in a fleshlight that’s been marinating in a brine of syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes for the past nine and a half months – i.e., ever since Truth Social (aka Prevarication Personal) launched in February 2022.

The Republicans haven’t *always* been like this, but they’ve been sliding downhill since Garfield.
trnc
A fine question. You’ve just torpedoed your career in the MSM.
The go-to response to “Wellllll, I don’t know what he said” should be “I just told you what he said.” Asking for context would be fair, but acting like the statement doesn’t exist because you didn’t see it is a ridiculous thing for interviewers to allow.
lowtechcyclist
Dems should start calling the GQP ‘un-American.’ Sure, that will rattle the MSM’s teacups and have them clutching their pearls, but dammit, the Dems can back this up.
There’s no fucking daylight in between the United States of America as we’ve known it for the past two-plus centuries, and our Constitution. If you are willing to put up with leaders who advocate terminating the motherfucking Constitution, then you don’t belong in our government, and you’re a fucking traitor. That’s what the Dems should be saying.
Geminid
@Mimi: Don’t forget how the American (“Know Nothing”) Party dissolved itself in 1860 and its numerous Northern members joined the new Republican Party.
The ideological descendents of the “Know Nothings” remain a powerful element in the Republican Party to this day. Their alliance with the descendents of the 1860 Breckinridge Democrats now dominates that party.

It’s on brand that ABC describes Joyce as the chair of “a centrist group in the House”, in the same article that he’s shrugging off TFG demanding we suspend the Constitution.
RevRick
@Citizen Alan: You got that right! When you read Umberto Eco’s 1995 essay on Ur-Fascism, the GOP checks off all the boxes on the fascist ticket.
RevRick
Fascism seems to recur on a 60-80 year cycle in the modern world, mainly in response to shifts that unsettled the old order. The South kicked it off in the 1850s with increasingly virulent defenses of slavery and white supremacy, then it reappeared in the 1920s here with a racist backlash to immigration, and overseas in Germany, Italy, and Japan. And now it’s rearing its ugly head here, and overseas in Russia, India, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
Of course, our Southern brand never really disappeared, living on as Jim Crow and the white supremacy of Christian Nationalism.
artem1s
I wonder how much of this is designed to force the other 1/6 conspirators to reaffirm their loyalty to TFG (McCarthy, Graham, etc). Garland appointing the Special Prosecutor has completely undone him. Now that he knows his SCOTUS butt buddies won’t save his ass, he’s just flat out calling for the GOP to say the next thing out loud – they never did intend to uphold their oaths and only care about the Constitution when they can manipulate the system to enrich themselves and retain power.
tokyokie
@Amir Khalid:
It’s worse than that. tfg, who has spent his entire life avoiding the consequences of his unceasingly vile conduct through wealth (real and supposed), prevarication, and abuse of process, has now determined that if the only way for him to continue to do so is to terminate the country’s foundational legal document, then nearly a quarter-millennium of legal tradition must fall, thus rendering the lives of millions of people who have gone before him meaningless, all for the preservation of his ego. He is, literally, the worst person this country has ever produce.
(Yes, I know this is way late to the thread, but I haven’t heard it expressed in such terms and I needed to get it off my chest.)
