I know this will get me kicked out of the good Republicans club, but I have no desire to watch the President gie the SOTU tonight. The whole event is so damned predictable- Republicans will gush, Democrats will groan, pundits will pedantically pick apart the speech and alternately gush and groan.
Plus, let’s face it- I hate listening to Bush give speeches.
I intend to watch Ray instead.

Can’t say it too often…
“Man is earth’s Choicemaker. Psalm 25:12 He is by nature
and nature’s God a creature of Choice – and of Criteria.
Psalm 119:30,173 His unique and definitive characteristic
is, and of Right ought to be, the natural foundation of
his environments, institutions, and respectful relations
to his fellow-man. Thus, he is oriented to a Freedom
whose roots are in the Order of the universe.” JB

The only interesting thing about SOTU addresses is looking at the bright, red, ugly mug of Senator Teddy and trying to figure out how many Jamesons he had before he got there.
Mikey
Got other things to do myself. I’ll pick the text up on the White House website later.

Geez, I forgot it’s tonight. I share your sentiments exactly.
Enjoy “Ray”–the opening sequence is freakin’ cool, greatest in recent memory.
jason
please turn in your ‘good republicans’ magnetic door swipe to the receptionist by tomorrow am. thx.

Sometimes evening classes are great!

I’m confused. I’m a little new around here too. This is basically a right wing site that specializes in politics. Tonight, a week after inauguration, days after elections in Iraq, with SS in the gunsights… no one wants to watch the SOTU?
I sometimes think most of the right wing really doesn’t care for Bush at all, it just hates the alternative so much that it carries on accordingly.
M. Scott Eiland
I’ll be watching it, since I’m on the West Coast and it starts at 6 PM my time, but if something was on opposite it that I preferred to watch, I’d simply read the text online or in the morning papers. As John notes, the partisan static from both sides in SOTU addresses is a bit irritating, and if you’d prefer to avoid it, the text of the address is readily available.
Mason
Zap, I think it’s more along the lines of political burnout. I feel like I ought to watch the SOTU since I skipped the Rice hearings and some other recent stuff, but frankly, I will probably just go to bed early tonight. Tired.
John Cole
Mason nailed it.

Speaking just for myself, Zap, I think Bush is the greatest president since FDR (how’s that for a comparison on a basically right wing site?), an unusually brave politician willing to take a tough challenge head-on, rather than punt and try to look good, not that I am in any way thinking of his predecessor.
He is, however, sometimes a fine speaker, often a bumbling one. If I watch this speech, he will either meet my expectations or make me cringe.
And if he makes me cringe, I will still think he’s basically doing the right thing in the war on terror, despite huge political risk and a distinctly unhelpful domestic opposition. He’ll simply be, as he’s been before, an admirable leader who spoke badly.
Either way, I’d rather save myself the time and stress, and read the text tomorrow.

Actually it was pretty damn good. Bush is on a roll. I’m glad I watched.

Mercy! Two posts in a row with which I heartily agree. Maybe it’s got something to do with Groundhog Day.
