Looks like we could use an open thread!

What’s everybody up to?  (Besides being mad at Biden, I guess?)

I’m eating leftover pizza and watching the final episode of Season 2 of Will Trent.

Wait, Really?? How Blonde Bombshell Farrah Fawcett Inspired Gladys Knight’s Biggest R&B Hit. The icon tune didn’t start out as an R&B song, but as a phone call.

Michelle Obama’s mother passed away today.

Statement on the Passing of Mrs. Marian Robinson from Barack and Michelle Obama, Craig and Kelly Robinson, and their children

Marian Lois Shields Robinson — our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother — had a way of summing up the truths about life in a word or two, maybe a quick phrase that made everyone around her stop and think. Her wisdom came off as almost innate, as something she was born with, but in reality it was hard-earned, fashioned by her deep understanding that the world’s roughest edges could always be sanded down with a little grace.
    Don’t sweat the small stuff.
    Know what’s truly precious.
As a parent, you’re not raising babies — you’re raising little people.
Don’t worry about whether anybody else likes you. Come home. We’ll always like you here.

Spent the last 3 days at my son’s.  On Tuesday he was informed he is having out of country guests for this weekend.  Fortunately, his teaching ended last week so he has time available.  I and Mrs Japa spent our time doing major weed pulling and other gardening cleanup duties while he worked in the house for the most part.

All worth it as today his yard was visited by a doe and her very young fawn.  The fawn came to within about 3 feet of us before scampering back to mom.  Mom, BTW, was keeping a very close eye on us.

Son lives 4 blocks from one of Cook County’s wonderful forest preserves, so this does happen occasionally.  Son believes it is the same doe that stopped by several times last year.  Unfortunately, lasts year’s fawn was taken down by a coyote despite mom’s best efforts.

CNN    Donald Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani is one step closer to being disbarred.

The professional responsibility board in Washington, DC, recommended Friday that the ex-New York mayor and federal prosecutor lose his law license because of his involvement in a bogus 2020 election fraud lawsuit.

Giuliani’s law license had already been suspended due to his work boosting Trump’s false assertions about his electoral loss. It is up to the DC Court of Appeals to decide whether to permanently disbar Giuliani.

Geminid, didja see this: trump campaign tells Bob Good to cease and desist!

(even though Good’s website and materials clearly note that trump has not endorsed Good this cycle)

Former president Donald Trump’s campaign on Friday demanded that the campaign of Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) stop displaying signs and other material that suggest Trump has endorsed the congressman for reelection, noting in a letter that Good’s primary opponent, state Sen. John McGuire (R-Goochland), has that support.

“Producing and displaying materials that give the false impression that President Trump is supportive of your candidacy is a fraud on the voters of the 5th Congressional District,” a Trump presidential campaign attorney said in a cease-and-desist letter emailed to Good and his campaign that included a photo of a yard sign with Trump’s name prominently over Good’s.

Folks, Good is pathetic enough that his yard signs do indeed say

    TRUMP
    _____
    GOOD

as if he’s been endorsed!  But Good’s website, even though it prominently features a pic of trumpov and Good, notes in tiny type at the bottom that trumpov “hasn’t endorsed Good this cycle”
What’s more pathetic than pathetic?  BOB GOOD

NBC  — Conservative gadfly Dinesh D’Souza’s film and book “2000 Mules,” which pushes false conspiracies about voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, has been removed from distribution by its executive producer and publisher, according to an announcement Friday.

Salem Media Group’s announcement that it had yanked D’Souza’s film and book also apologized to Mark Andrews, a Georgia man falsely accused in “2000 Mules” of ballot stuffing.

Andrews in late 2022 filed a federal defamation lawsuit against the company, D’Souza, and the non-profit advocacy group True The Vote, which contributed to the “2000 Mules’ project.

“If you don’t want to be held liable
for rape, as Donald Trump has, don’t grab the woman’s genitalia. If you don’t want to be held liable for defaming the woman you raped, don’t keep lying about what you did and calling her a nut job.

“If you don’t want to be indicted for overthrowing the Constitution, don’t start a self-coup. If you don’t want to be indicted for stealing classified documents and obstructing justice, don’t take the classified documents. When the government asks for them back, give them back. If the FBI serves you with a search warrant, don’t hide the documents and don’t lie about it and don’t have your lawyers lie about it.

“This isn’t that hard. Donald Trump is not the victim here.”

    This is interesting.

The Florida federal judge  judge overseeing the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump has been the target of more than 1,000 complaints in just one week this month raising allegations of her handling of the case, a top appeals court judge revealed in an order.

The complaints against Judge Aileen Cannon have come to light amid renewed criticism by some legal observers and Trump opponents that she is slow-walking the criminal case against the former president to ensure it does not go to trial before the presidential election.

“Many of the complaints” against Cannon filed with the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals “request that the Chief Circuit Judge remove her from the classified-documents case and reassign the case to a different judge,” Chief Judge William Pryor wrote in a May 22 order posted on the appeal court’s website.

    . . .

Pryor, in his May 22 order about the complaints, wrote that he “has considered and dismissed four of those orchestrated complaints as merits-related and as based on allegations lacking sufficient evidence to raise an inference that misconduct has occurred.”

He also wrote that neither he nor the appeals court’s Judicial Council has the authority to remove Cannon from the case under the Rules for Judicial-Conduct and Judicial-Disability Proceedings.

“Although many of the complaints allege an improper motive in delaying the case, the allegations are speculative and unsupported by any evidence,” Pryor wrote.

“The Complaints also do not establish that Judge Cannon was required to recuse herself from the case because she was appointed by then-President Trump.”

The chief judge also wrote that before May 16, “multiple Complaints of Judicial Misconduct or Disability” were filed against Cannon, who sits in Fort Pierce, Florida, federal court, “raising allegations in connection” with Trump’s criminal case.

“Some of those complaints have been acted upon, and others will be acted upon in due course,” Pryor wrote, without revealing the nature of those actions.

Then back to partying. I’ve had it on as background all day: sometimes I join the party!😁🥂🥳

I just had a cool shower. For some reason the pilot light on our gas water heater went out.

I had to relearn the process to ignite it. Hopefully it stays lit, and is not a sign and portent about a failing water heater.

The usual suspects confidently predicted dire consequences if our legal system had the temerity to convict the newly-fledged Felon — bloody riots in the streets, the stock market crashing, plagues of frogs and locusts…

The Dow is up almost 600 points today, and stepping outside, I can’t see any riots or plagues, but miraculously, the cicadas have fallen quiet.

    @WaterGirl:

I took the FP for granted too. Our “local,” if you will, was Thatcher Woods, right on the boundary of Oak Park and River Forest. There was a woman named Virginia Moe who was in Zonta with my mom. Miss Moe was in charge of all the animal rescue and rehab projects at Thatchers Woods. People would bring in orphaned bunnies, injured birds, limping foxes, etc., and she would care for them. The ones who got well were, I think, re-released into the forest, but some stayed at her (fairly primitive in those days) visitor-center-cum-hospital-cum-educational-facility/museum if they were too damaged to fend for themselves in the wild. She was a cool woman. Wrote an autobiography called something like Animal Ark. My sister and I used to love visiting her and the animals.

ETA: Animal Inn, not Animal Ark.

@Miss Bianca: It’s a pretty simple recipe. I found it in Better Homes & Gardens (yes, I still get magazines) but I can’t find it on their website.

Anyway, you roughly chop up a red onion and 3-4 green onions and pour boiling water over them. Put these in a pint jar. Then mix up 3/4 cup vinegar, 1 Tbsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp caraway seeds and add this to the onions and put it in the fridge overnight.

I was really pleased that the caraway seed flavor came through even though the caraway seeds I used I have had forever.

@Jackie: The 5th Virginia CD is rated about R+9. It covers counties from Albemarle (surrounding Charlottesville) south to the North Carolina line. I would not say it’s gerrymandered red because it would take some creative redistricting just to make it purple.

Anyway, a couple of court -appointed Special Masters drew it after the new Redistricting Commission deadlocked. I think the sprcial masters did a wonderful job because they moved my county into the 7th CD. I went from having Bob Good as my representative to having Abigail Spanberger.

Thinking reducing the vinegar to ½ cup and adding ¼ cup akvavit would intensify the caraway punch, but not overwhelmingly.

Suppose when all mixed together it could be simmered to cook off the alcohol if teetotal is your thing.

@WaterGirl: My wife and I are now watching the third seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil. The setting for both of these is in Hell’s Kitchen, following The Avengers battle of New York. Jessica has a super power of strength. Matt Murdock (Daredevil) is blind, but has super acute hearing, but his real power is the ability to take a punch. His nemesis is King Pin, played by the incomparable Vincent D’Onofrio. Jessica is what you get when a superhero has experienced great trauma.
