Go Pens! Don’t leave us for three months with nothing but the Pirates until the NFL starts.

Our local paper printed cut-out dolls of famous Pens players that could be used to make voodoo dolls. Hockey here in Montreal is serious business.

I took my last final last night. Unless I managed to fail one of the two classes where grades aren’t posted yet, I am now a Master of Accountancy. Yay, me!
Katie5
@J. Michael Neal: Hooray! Congrats!
Comrade Mary
Go Habs! Va t’en chez vous, Pens!
Strandedvandal
Go Habs!
Yeah, my Wings are out, I want the Penguins to go.
montag
Having watched my Sabres shamelessly shuffle off to the golf course, I have to root for the Pens. You got some good western NY boys on your team.
Violet
@J. Michael Neal:
Congrats!
I’ve got zero interest in hockey, unless it’s Olympic hockey because I watch Winter Olympics anything, but I like penguins in general. So I’ll cheer on the Penguins.
Do they ever bring any real live penguins to the hockey games? Like for the entertainment between the periods or something?
sputnikgayle
Congratulations Mr. Neal. I hope you have some time to properly celebrate.

@Strandedvandal: The best thing about a Montreal win tonight is that Leafs fans are going to start going insane at the idea that the Habs might win another Cup. Anything that gets under their skin is good by me.
themann1086
Has anyone made sure John doesn’t have access to sharp objects tonight? That 1st period did not go well…
RSR
Interesting about Versus; seems local broadcasts are RSN (FSP, CSNPhilly for Flyers) with reverse coverage on Versus. Let us know if you get the Flyers/Boston game on Versus if you would.
Strandedvandal
@ J. Michael Neal
I used to travel to Toronto a lot for work, and the best games to see were the Sabres/Leafs games in Buffalo. Man those fans hate each other! Good times.

Non-hockey: I’m currently reading a graphic novel called Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow. It’s a sweet father and son story that traces the sense of wonder around space that begins during the 1939 World’s Fair and moves through the moon launches. I haven’t finished it yet so I don’t know what’s covered past that– a good review is at http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/11/whatever-happened-to-the-world-of-tomorrow/. I recommend it as an excellent Father’s Day present. Especially if your dad loves hard sf.
I’m very cautious with graphic novels–I never did get into the Sandman/V -is for Vendetta Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman kind of stuff. But I do love the (comics?) books that capture the mood/history of a place and require the image and the word working together to tell a story. My favorite is Guy Delisle’s Pyongyang, which captures what I imagine is the surreal life working as a foreigner in N. Korea. I also like Shaun Tan, who completely captures a place without saying a word.
Do others here like graphic novels?
Comrade Mary
@J. Michael Neal: Ah-woo-hoo and w00t! Nice job, man!

Lasagna!
Comrade Mary
@Violet:
Some fans have been known to bring other aquatic life to games. It’s not pretty.
OTOH, octopi are pretty dexterous and have the potential to be pretty good stick handlers. Stay tuned. Evolution is a wonderful thing.

Commenting from San Jose, where we are almost ready to believe that we’re not choking in the playoffs this time around.
And on octopi/sharks:
San Jose sees octopus, raises it with shark eating baby octopus
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
I thought soccer matches were called, well, matches.
I’m off to watch my Padres smack the Giants around again. @jeffreyw: I will see your lasagne and raise you garlic fries and Anchor Steam.
Mumphrey
Hey, the Pirates look like they might not be half bad this year.
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@Comrade Mary: One year at the Big Freeze (Cal vs. Stanfurd hockey game) we managed to get several whole fish and a large frozen turkey onto the ice.
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@Mumphrey: cincy just swept them after they swept us. They often start out good but always fizzle soon, but then so have the Reds the last 8 or 9 years.
Comrade Mary
@Comrade Colette Collaboratrice: As God is your witness, you thought turkeys could skate?
(Insert [team of your choice] joke here.)
The Grand Panjandrum
It was actually below freezing last night and may be again tonight so hockey in mid-May isn’t quite as irritating as it usually is. But, hey, they play hockey in TX and AZ now so what the fuck do I know. I’m just waiting for some crazy wingnut to bitch about the Canadians taking all the zamboni driving jobs away from “real” Americans. (Or something similarly crazy.)
Katie5
woo hoo!
The game may not be in the Bell Centre, but the place is packed to the rafters with people watching the game on a huge screen.
Comrade Kevin
3-0 Habs!
PaulW
Go Rays!
Also, I have my book in ebook (Kindle, eReader, Nook) format. Anyone want the links?
The Grand Panjandrum
OT: Even right leaning milbloggers support repeal of DADT. In my last comment I said it was below freezing last night … hhhhmmmmm ….
PaulW
You seriously want to see the Steelers? Given the circumstances I’d be a bit wary and weary with them
J. Michael Neal
@jeffreyw: I think you’re going to have to provide us with a good recipe for penguin, because these birds are done.
Katie5
unbelievable! 4-0
torrentprime
@The Grand Panjandrum:
The comments to that post, however, are a little disheartening.
Comrade Mary
4-0? Jesus.
Is Crosby losing his cool like he did in the last game? That kid is usually so cool, and he did bring home gold for us, so I feel pretty bad if he’s just struggling out there.
Katie5
4-1
Comrade Mary
ARGH!! 4-1 after the puck bounced off a ref.
I really should have learned not to gloat or sympathize from the Olympics thread. Shutting up now.
ellie
Allons y Habs!
Sirkowski
You failed me again Pittsburgh… :-/
Katie5
Noooo. 4-2
daverave
Go Pirates!
Comrade Bukharin
I always thought the Pens had the coolest uniforms of the 1967 expansion class.
J. Michael Neal
Though I’d be okay if Pittsburgh manages to come back. They have an all-Gopher defense pairing in Leopold and Goligoski. Come to think of it, we haven’t had a really good d-man since Goligoski left.
Pooh
Shit’s poppin off now! Period can’t end soon enough for MTL.
Davis X. Machina
Habs/Bruins. Pissah.
Party like it’s 1970
someguy
I used to like hockey until I found out that roughly 20% of the players on the ice at any time are right wingers.
jwb
@someguy: If only we could get them odds in the real world!
Katie5
woohoo! Let’s hope no cars get burned tonight!
Cat Lady
@Davis X. Machina:
That was an ionic moment in Boston sports.
Comrade Mary
You see? I had to go and, like, do actual billable work, then fix the mystery flat in my front tire tube. (Pro tip: if you can’t see or hear a leak in a semi-inflated tube, and you can’t feel it blowing against your cheek or lips, submerge the tube in sections in a sink full of water and look for the bubbles.)
Then I tuned in to the CBC, was in AGONY as they failed to show the score for 30 whole seconds, then found I was looking at the last 10 seconds of a 5-2 game.
Sorry, Pens and fans. You’re good guys, but we were way overdue for a chance at the finals.
Crza
What the hell! Jaroslav Halak is just ridiculous right now. He could single-handedly win the Cup for the Habs. Insanity.
montag
@Strandedvandal: The Toronto fans that made it to Buffalo were the ones not allowed in the Toronto arena anymore
jackmac
Too bad about the Pens. On the other hand three of the four Stanley Cup finalists could be Original Six teams: Canadiens, Blackhawks and Bruins (if Boston beats Philadelphia in Game 7).
Thoroughly Pizzled
@someguy: That’s better than 27%, though.
Skippy-san
I guess its time to sing the Bucco’s theme song.
“The Bucs are going all the way-down the drain this year!”
Ed Drone
@someguy:
Look at it this way — that’s the upper limit, too! With the possible exception of power plays and empty net/extra attacker/desperation part of the game.
Ed
Ed Drone
@someguy:
Keep in mind that that’s an upper limit, too, except in power plays or empty-net/extra attacker/desperation plays.

Brutal showing by the Pens.

penguins suck, glad they lost

the good guys won.

Bummer, I take it the coward Matt Cooke still has licorice chicklets in his mealy mouth? I was kind of hoping that he’d keep playing until his nickname was Gummy Bear. Oh well, maybe he’ll lose the rest riding around on Big Ben’s Hog this summer.
Very depressing to watch the Canadians doing one of those ‘riots’ in the streets. The entire planet is populated by cretins these days. Can we just call the whole thing off, it’s May and nobody should be playing hockey this time of year anyway.
Djee-S
Only a tiny minority of people went Downtown to break shop windows… Not the fans who were attending the game. Most of the “rioters” were arrested either on the spot, or later, thanks to the fans that video taped them on their cell phones and turned them over to the cops.
Go Habs Go!!!
