I plan on watching a couple of James Burke’s “Connections” with the wife. She’s never seen them, and we’ve got a backlog of “Connections” and “The Day the Universe Changed” in the Netflix queue.

As long as your role in the zoo isn’t being one of the unhappily captive animals, like one of the restlessly pacing cats bored out of your gord being confined to an enclosure. Much better if you’re one of the animals who seems happy with the cozy trade of being put on display in confinement in exchange for free food and a place to live free of predators and pests (except the humans looking at you).

I’m going to behave like an ass, and post this again here; I didn’t get onto the last open thread until 50 comments in. Not to worry; I won’t make this a habit.
Since this is an open thread, I’d like to bring up the fact that I run a small non-profit called Bilingual schooling for Tela, Atlántida (BiSTA). I recruit English-speaking teachers and raise the money to send them to teach at a little bilingual school in Tela, Honduras. I also raise the money to pay them the $200 a month they earn down there. That way, the school gets free teachers, and free the $200 a month they’d need to pay the teacher for other things, like scholarships, paying the Honduran teachers or supplies and upkeep.
I pretty much am the non-profit. I run it from my house when I’m not looking after our 3 year old daughter. My organization is recognized as non-profit by the IRS under section 501( c )3 of the Internal Revenue Code, so any contributioons are tax deductible. Well, as I said, I’m the non-profit here. I don’t pay myself anything, so all the money goes to the teacher I’m supporting right now.
And as you can guess by now, I’m going to ask that if any of you have a little money you can spare, I’d be happy to put it to good use. Also, the teacher down there now is 74, and needs a knee operation, so he won’t be going back next year, so if you know of any young teachers who wouldn’t mind spending a year teaching in a country where not all the children go to school (there aren’t enough public schools; that’s why there are lots of private ones—private school in Honduras is often not a tony place as it is here, but a place a local family sets up in a town to help fill a need), and who wouldn’t mind living in a Caribbean beach town for a year (Tela is right on the sea there), then please, let me know.
My website is http://www.bista.org

My brain hurts from all of the noise. The oil disaster in the Gulf, the stupidity that is Palin and the fact that she gets 12 million bucks for anything she does, and the annoyance of Teabaggers in general; it all makes me grumpy.
So I’m going to finish working on my latest hooked rug. It’s an awareness rug about the African elephants, who are endangered. I hope to display it when it’s all done and get some attention to their plight.

If anyone cares, my fiber retreat was tons of fun but, as I suspected, I was a mere Lady Geek compared to the Queens of (Fiber) Geek who were there. My geekitude just couldn’t compete with the woman who grew her own cotton, processed it, spun it into yarn, and wove herself a vest.
Though I am now the proud owner of a drop spindle and I am going to try to figure out how to handspin some yarn. I came home with a huge amount of dyed roving (like a half-pound, at least) that I won as a door prize, so I think the universe is telling me something.

Now I’m gonna jump in the car and make my one-hour commute back to our little slice of paradise. I’ll take Mrs. P. on a walk, then we’ll eat Chinese carryout. Ah, the joys of a long marriage.

Wait. What? Connections is available via Netflix? Sweet Mother Mary!
Great stuff. As I recall, I particularly liked the episode that connected the aftermath of the Little Ice Age, the Great Plague, the printing press and God knows what else.
It’s not happy hour yet here in California, so I don’t know what I’m going to do later today. But tomorrow, I will probably go see the new Robin Hood movie.

Off to happy hour very shortly.
Tomorrow I pick up my first CSA of the season. According the weekly email letter we’ll be getting asparagus, rhubarb, arugula, chinese cabbage, spinach, green garlic, oregano, chives, radish, and kale. Good eatin’ this week.
And of course I have to sneak in 4 softball games this weekend.

Going to graduation this evening. I am having a sad. I got unusually close with several members of the class of 2010 and will miss them. I haven’t had this sort of closeness with a group of students since early in my career when I was still at the community college and the students were all about my own age. It’s weird and a little disconcerting to get this close with them now that I have 30 years over them. The Beav will seem empty without them. And no, I’m not the Beav. That’s the students’ nickname for my campus of my large state related university.
Then my John and I plan to get drunk. I’ll be the one weeping in my beer.

@Mnemosyne: The roving sounds nice. Have a good time learning to use the spindle. I tried one a few months ago but I haven’t gotten the hang of it yet — been spending my time crocheting. Once I’m working again I hope to get to a couple of fiber/knitting/crochet retreats.

think I’m gonna have to move, people
I gotta move out of my neighborhood
Hey, I said I’m gonna have to move
I gotta get out of my neighborhood
Because you see
The women they tell lies on me
And the men they just don’t mean me
No doggone good
Every time my telephone rings
Some lady trying to play
Some old funny game on me
Every time my telephone rings
Some lady trying to play
Some old funny game on me
And every time my front doorbell rings
Some angry six foot man
With a knife in his hand
They say I’m in love with a woman
That works down at the Chicken Shack
They say Deacon Jones’ wife
Gave me a brand new Cadillac
That’s why I gotta move
I gotta get out of my neighborhood
I tell you the people
They tell lies on me
Hey, they just don’t mean me
No doggone good
My landlady came by my apartment
She came by just to make up my bed
But it took her all night long
Can you imagine what the neighbors said
That’s why I gotta move
Hey, I gotta get out
Of my neighborhood
I tell you the people
They tell lies on me
Hey, they just don’t mean me
No doggone good
Hey, I gotta move
Hey, I gotta move
I gotta move
I gotta move
Hey, the people, the people
Don’t like me here, people
Oh you know they just don’t mean me
No doggone good
Nobody loves me but my mother
Sometimes I think
She could be jiving, too
Hey, nobody
Nobody loves me but my mother

Personally, I don’t care if LeBron stays or goes. I think the Knicks are run by idiots and he’d be a lot farther from a championship if he went there (or New Jersey, who are probably even worse). But I heard some guy on the radio say that this will damage his legacy if he can’t bring a championship to Cleveland. Yeah, just like how everyone thinks Shaq sucked because he never brought a championship to Orlando.

I have no idea why Stuck is so mad at me. I didn’t call anyone out by name, I didn’t link to anyone. I just said my piece, and I let everyone else say their piece. What is the big deal?

Apparently I was doing a good job of preparing the roving and seeing where the fibers were separating from one another. I haven’t actually tried spinning at home yet, what with the cats and all.
@lemma:
Yes, all was well — I met nice people, got my Sonic burger (well, my Sonic grilled chicken sandwich and tater tots — I really went for the tots), and officially canceled the card when I got back. Just got my new one in the mail yesterday.
@Bad Horse’s Filly:
That’s kind of what I’m afraid of, but when the universe hands you a pound of roving dyed in your favorite colors, what is one supposed to do?
I am very fond of needles (except the kind they stick in your arm). I used to do counted cross-stitch, but my carpal tunnels won’t allow it anymore, so now I knit. I learned some very basic crochet at the retreat — I need to practice so I can make some of these guys.
(If Amazon is still showing Amigurumi Knits as a related item, I highly recommend it. I already made an anglerfish and I have the yarn to make a lovely kraken.)
FlipYrWhig
@John Cole: I thought it was that he thought you weren’t fighting fair: one post about how all people of sound mind agree that X; commenters on that post showing that some people actually _do_ disagree about X; then a further post about how those who disagreed about X were taking an indefensible position. I don’t think that happened any worse on this issue than happens on many issues on many blogs, but that was my sense of the core gripe.

Are you in my neck of the woods? Because no one here in my little pocket of Western PA can remember a damn thing Specter has ever done for us. But then, we say the same about Rendell. And I’m big on Onorato for gov, too. Would love, love, love to have a quintessential and fairly young ‘Burgh guy in the governor’s mansion.
And John, Stuck is just pouting over his butthurt over your disagreeing with him. He is convinced that o he, and only he, is totally in sync with you and Obama. Proof that this is not true is a bit too much for him. He’ll get over it just like I got over it when I pied him.

I had planned to skim the assassination post but it sounds too tedious for a Friday (it’s been a long week). I agree with John on this.
I’m working for the NC Dems in my house district for this fall’s election and we’re having a bit of an issue in getting people to volunteer to help us. Many are still burned out from the amount of time they gave the Obama campaign (many of which had never volunteered for any candidate).
Their rationale is something like, “Obama is in charge so there’s nothing to worry about until 2012”. While I have talking points to disprove this, do any of you have arguments that are especially effective & compelling? My default: we need to work hard to unseat Richard Burr in the Senate.
If you have better ideas, I’d love to hear them!

@fucen tarmal:
Awesome. I’m a Beaver County girl, myself. New Brighton, to be exact. And I’m totally with you on the Philly hegemony shit. Fuck them. I’m sick to death of our bridges crumbling under our feet while they build gorgeous new highways for Centre County where only about a fifth of the people using them actually pay the taxes that make them possible. And don’t get me started on the cash for social services and civic projects that Philly gets and Pittsburgh will never see. Not to mention that Beaver County may as well not even exist.

Yay, fiberadicts are here.
I am almost done knitting a bath mat. I unraveled a fuzzy old sweater because it was just the right color for the bathroom color scheme. I’m knitting it pretty dense but since it’s some acrylic combo yarn, it’s still soft & will be easy to launder in the washing machine. Cozy on the feet after that shower too.
Yes, I know it’s a little weird to spend time unraveling something to knit something else but most fiber folks are a tad obsessed when they get some mad project in their heads.

@Laura W.:
It seemed like half of the episodes were Data trying to be more human, and the other half were about someone getting stuck in the holodeck. That thing caused more problems than the Romulans.

@Mnemosyne:@PurpleGirl: Spinny fiber people!!
If the drop spindle doesn’t work out (mine didn’t so much), try switching to a Navajo spindle. I’m spinning up a gorgeous alpaca/tussah blend on one and loving it. BFF is getting hand spun socks for Christmas this year. I have much better control of my drafting with the Navajo – almost as good as my wheel (Jensen Original Tina #32, booya!), whereas with the drop spindles I’m just all over the place. I’m missing my Estes Park fiber fair this year, since I’ll be doing a bit of grandchildren-doting that week, so I guess I’ll just have to make do with my closet full of hoarded fiber. And the fleece I’ve got in the garage….

I cleaned out the stuff & reclaimed the room but the poor looms are still waiting for me to get my other crap done.@bey:
Someone spun our dogs’ (Samoyed) hair for me years ago. Gorgeous yarn, looks & feels just like mohair. I have several skeins but still have not knit anything with the yarn yet. Thank you. Thank you all. Since I first posted about this at 6 or 7:00 tonight, I’ve already gotten $75. That’s just a little less than half a full month’s wages for the Australian guy down there this year.
I’ll say again, Glenn Lynch, the Australian teacher, is 74, and has a bad knee, so he isn’t going to go back next year. He came with his wife (I’m not yet enough of a fundraiser to take on more than 1 teacher at a time), so she won’t be back, either, which means they’ll be short 2 teachers next year. If you know anybody who’d be interested in doing this next year, please let me know. Living in Honduras isn’t for everybody, but I loved it; I think I learned more about the world in the 2 years I lived there than I ever had before or have since. I tell people Tela is like malaria: not everybody who gets exposed to it gets it, but if you do get it, you’ll have it for life.
So, anyway, Tela is a smallish town, small enough that people will know who you are and why you’re there within a few weeks. Some people find that cloying; I liked the feeling of community. It’s primitive in some ways by our standards; when there’s a bad thunderstorm, often the whole town goes dark for an hour or so. You can’t drink the tap water. Most places aren’t air conditioned. And there are things you’ll miss from home; I missed getting all kinds of cheese more than anything else. But it also has advantages we don’t have, like no winter, the Caribbean Sea and really cheap beer.
So if anybody wants to know more, feel free to ask any time.

I have a theory that a thread officially jumps the shark when matoko chan shows up with “I’m not saying black people are stupid, science is!”

@Mumphrey: A suggestion if you’re up for it: make your name on BJ a direct link to your site. That way folks can donate as they come across some spare change and it will make your site much easier to access. Just a thought, you’re doing some damn good work there. Honestly, you should have let us know sooner, we’re a pretty amazing group around here when we want to be.

@Yutsano:
That was a pretty good idea. You’re right, I should have done this sooner, but I only thought of it yesterday or the day before. Sometimes, as my wife says, I’m not too bright.

@Mumphrey: I’ve looked at your website. It’s pretty good. May I ask who designed it for you and who maintains it? I used to work in fundraising for an educational non-profit in NYC. I may have some ideas for you in the near future. No promises but I want to think about ways to help you and your work in Honduras.

@Mark S.:
What she’s actually saying is that there’s a heritability to IQ and race and that her research and data points indicate black people score lower across a spectrum… of data points…that..tests…
No, you had it right the first time.

@PurpleGirl:
My wife pretty much set up the web stuff, and got me an account with microsoft live and showed me how to put stuff up; and a friend’s friend, who’s a graphic designer, did the pictures and drew the logo and stuff. I wrote everything and chose the colors and layout from a bunch of more or less ready-made choices. It’s still pretty bare; I don’t know anything ast all about how it really works; I just know that if I go to my account and write something on one of the pages, it shows up on the site, but I don’t understand how it works.
As I said, I’m not really a fundraiser. This is something I kind of felt called to do, so I’m muddling along, doing my best to learn as I go. Any suggestions will be helpful, and I’d be most thankful.

@PurpleGirl: @Mumphrey: Maybe I’m looking into this too much, but this could be the start of something good.

@Mnemosyne:
They won’t be that pissed off that they haven’t heard from you. More concerned, probably. Bite the bullet. Wade through the messages. You’ll feel better after.

I missed this earlier. This was good.
