Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Be a wild strawberry.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

White supremacy is terrorism.

We still have time to mess this up!

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Cold Grey Dawn Open Thread: Where Is Susie Wiles?

They're Coming for Susie Wiles

If Wiles has actually stepped away from her job as Chief Nanny — by her own choice or not — it’s a sign that the WH courtiers have started ripping the copper wiring out of the walls. By all reports, she’s the closest to a governor on the flailing Trump juggernaut… he didn’t snap ‘Quiet, Piggy’ at female reporters while his surrogate mom (note the unfortunate hairstyle) was around.

Donald Trump’s longtime supporters are coming for White House gatekeeper Susie Wiles, blaming the president’s so-called “Ice Maiden” for his missteps on everything from the Jeffrey Epstein files to his America First agenda.

— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast.bsky.social) November 14, 2025 at 9:30 PM

“MAGA Finds Woman to Blame for Trump’s Spiral Into Crisis”:

… After a turbulent week marked by criticism of the president’s comments on “affordability,” skilled worker visas, Chinese students, and his halting response to the newly released Epstein emails, MAGA loyalists have openly accused his chief of staff of steering the president off-course.

Wiles, long viewed as one of the architects behind Trump’s 2024 campaign revival and now a central force inside the West Wing, has spent years cultivating a reputation as a disciplined, discreet operative—someone who not just advises Trump, but tries to keep him focused and filters out the noise for him.

But for some hardline conservatives and MAGA loyalists, her gatekeeping is now the problem…

“She needs to go before she gets him destroyed in the midterms,” wrote one social media user, who describes herself as “just a red girl living in a blue world.”

“Too many boomers as gatekeepers. Get a young COS with the pulse on modern American issues,” wrote another…

But Trump has long been a staunch defender of his top aide, whom he affectionately calls “Ice Maiden” and once praised as “the most powerful person in the world.”

The 68-year-old was the first major staffing appointment the president made after winning the election last year, marking the first time a woman has held the position of chief of staff in the White House.

“Susie Wiles just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of both my 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns,” Trump said on Nov. 8, 2024, four days after defeating Kamala Harris.

He added that Wiles, a former adviser to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, was “universally admired and respected.”

But not everyone in Trump’s orbit initially agreed with the pick. In his new book Retribution, ABC journalist Jonathan Karl revealed a last-ditch effort by two other contenders, Linda McMahon and Brooke Rollins, to derail Wiles’ appointment ahead of Trump meeting her at Mar-a-Lago on Nov. 7 to offer her the job…

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended top Trump administration aides Susie Wiles and Stefanie Spear Friday after some of his supporters accused them of working against Kennedy’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement.

— Lauren Ashley Davis (@laurenmeidasa.bsky.social) November 15, 2025 at 9:06 AM

Another bad sign:

…Kennedy’s post in support of Wiles came after one recently fired Department of Health and Human Service employee said that he believes Wiles is behind a plan to destroy Kennedy and his MAHA movement.

“They didn’t want the status quo changed, and they’ve jumped into bed with Big Pharma,” Steve Hatfill said in an interview posted on X Wednesday, referring to Wiles and other aides who he believes are getting in Kennedy’s way…

In his X post Friday, Kennedy said that “a small number of chaos agents are now targeting Susie out of ignorance or malice.”

Mary Talley Bowden, a physician known for promoting ivermectin to treat Covid-19 despite FDA warnings that the drug is ineffective against the disease and can cause harm, responded to Kennedy: “Calling dissenters “chaos agents” is a CIA tactic,” she wrote in an X post…

Ignorance, malice – that pretty much sums up Trump’s GOP. And Lord knows they’ve got plenty of chaos agents. So welcome to the bed you’ve helped make, you privileged scum.  May they come after you as well.

OTish, but I’ve been thinking about Nuzzi/Kennedy,  and want to reiterate that this is the sort of prose that nets you a primo journalism management position, a lucrative book deal, and a New York Times profile for the cognoscenti:

I did not like to think about it just as later I would not like to think about the worm in his brain that other people found so funny. I loved his brain. I hated the idea of an intruder therein. Others thought he was a madman; he was not quite mad the way they thought, but I loved the private ways that he was mad. I loved that he was insatiable in all ways, as if he would swallow up the whole world just to know it better if he could. He made me laugh, but I winced when he joked about the worm. “Baby, don’t worry,” he said. “It’s not a worm.” A doctor he trusted had reviewed the scans of his brain obtained by The New York Times, he said, and concluded that the shadowy figure was likely not a parasite at all. He sighed. It was too late to interfere with what had already vaulted from the sphere of meme to the sphere of screwy legend, but at least I did not have to worry about the worm that was not a worm in his brain.

I don’t blame her – I blame the morons that hired her.

    @Betty Cracker:

If you REALLY want to get a hate read on, take a gander at Lizza’s retort to the book. These are all tedious, unserious, talentless people astride prestige platforms, grabbing piles of cash and accolades while ruining public discourse by a combination of mediocrity, avarice and malice.

    telos.news/p/part-1-how-i-found-out

Our relationship was improbable in so many ways, but every time it survived its own contradictions and weathered another storm, we took it as a sign of strength and a shared fate. As we exited that era, Olivia wrote me a note reflecting on “all that we’ve made it through together.”

“Sometimes,” she said, “I feel like I’ve lived a hundred lives, and when I look back, the only really sad ones, even if nothing particularly sad occurred, were the ones before I found you.”

Now, the dark clouds had passed, and we were enjoying a period of tranquil domesticity. We moved into a three-story townhouse in Georgetown, where we hosted intimate dinners and threw parties for our friends in media and politics. Olivia wanted to get married in the next few years—“Before I’m old,” she would say, meaning 30—and our Georgetown chapter was a test run for whether that might work. I politely demurred whenever the subject came up and spent my free time in the garden tinkering with fountains and battling the bamboo.

There were also new pressures on us. We were under contract to write a book about the presidential campaign. The primaries were in full swing, and it felt like we were falling behind on our project. But there was one bright spot. Olivia was spending more and more time in South Carolina, from where she had just returned, which was a good thing, I thought, considering how politically important the state was. In the fall, she had published, in New York magazine, a profile of a long-shot but intriguing presidential candidate, and he continued to be a helpful source. Maybe this book would come together, after all.

It was early March. I looked out the window at the garden and noticed the first flowers blooming. Then, squinting, I also thought I saw some new shoots of bamboo. I would have to get out the machete.

But one mess at a time. As I tidied up the desk, something on the Kimpton stationery caught my eye. I started to read.

“If I swallowed every drop of water from the tower above your house,” Olivia had written, “I would still thirst for you.”

    I mean, Jesus….

Susie Wiles has thoroughly earned whatever misfortunes come her way but the idea that she’s solely or primarily responsible for Trump’s political swan dive is just so ridiculously stupid you’d think they were kidding until you realize ridiculously stupid is, like, what these people are.

Starting with the DOGE wilding spree through tariff mania and ICE raids, FEMA fuck ups, MAHA craziness etc it’s easy to name the advisor responsible and in all cases Wiles isn’t at the top of the list. Especially the tariffs, which are so obviously Trump’s decision.  But more infighting is better than less so please proceed morons.

“Not that long ago, I had helped her untangle herself from an unusual relationship with Keith Olbermann, the former MSNBC host. She had messaged him out of the blue. They started talking, and soon after, she fled her unhappy home in suburban New Jersey and started living with Keith in Manhattan. He paid for her to attend college, outfitted her in Tom Ford and Hervé Léger dresses and some $15,000 worth of Cartier jewelry. Later, he covered her rent and furnished her apartment in a doorman building in the West Village. While Keith, who was 34 years older, was generous, there were strings attached. Olivia had concealed the relationship from me and other friends, but one day she told me everything—too much, actually—and together we hatched a plan for her escape.”

@Betty Cracker: Her prose desired a competent editor :-)

@Jeffro: Yeah, they should definitely kick her out right now! Embarrass her while they are at it.

    @Princess:

Trump is too smart to let her go though.

Laura Loomer (AKA “Trump’s Fellatrix”, H/T Gin & Tonic) is opposed to S. Wiles, so … it could get interestingly stupid.

@strange visitor (from another planet): Yeah, pro-tip from the future to younger and dumber selves: Anyone you hook up with who is cheating on a partner to hook up with you, WILL cheat on you with someone else. I wouldn’t call it as inevitable as the sun rising in the east, but…close.

    @Gretchen: Yeah, like “Anonymous.”

“You may think a lawless President is a danger. So do I! That’s why we don’t respect the chain of command! If the President says to do something, we sit on it, until he comes to his senses! Because, after all, the most important thing is, if the President is inherently unfit for office, we’ll cover for his worst tendencies, so his lawbreaking doesn’t ruin Republican poll numbers. So, thank us, for failing to obey orders, and for failing to raise the alarm that the President is a grave danger to the constitutional order!”

Wiles is the same thing, only, you know, taking credit for unleashing fascism.

Do you think Hitlers COS was also fascist? Or just a Nazi who rode along, didn’t really want to murder millions of Jews, just, you knew, went along to go along, damn shame about the Jews and all, but, hey, don’t call her a collaborator, call her a *GUARD RAIL* against even worse crimes that should be tried at Nuremberg…?

She is likely the biggest reason all that is going on right now didn’t happen earlier.
