Just about the only thing I’ll miss from this election season is Paladino’s endless well of comedy.
meh
possible underage drinking and blackface along with what may be forever known as the “Carl Paldino Blowjob Face” = win
TomG
The one good thing about Cuomo – he ISN’T Carl Paladino.
I’m definitely voting for Warren Redlich.
gogol's wife
Isn’t it sad that this is the Republican nominee for governor of New York? I mean, really, really sad, only two years after the country seemed to have gotten sane?
Violet
@gogol’s wife:
When did the country get sane? Was that when McCain picked Palin as his running mate and the country and media fawned all over her. Is that the sanity to which you are referring?
Just Some Fuckhead
Sure, and the Jew on the right has gentile baby blood all over his smock.
chopper
the woman he’s holding onto looks all ‘jesus, what have i gotten myself into’
Martin
Hmm. Does Paladino think he’s running for Gov of NJ?
c u n d gulag
Well, when he loses, at least he’s got a future as a centerfold cadaver model in morticians magazines.
Steve
@Violet: Which country was it that fawned all over Sarah Palin? Wasn’t mine.
gogol's wife
@gogol’s wife:
I never said the media got sane. Palin was decisively rejected at the polls. I don’t think the “country” fawned on her, if votes are any indication.
Alice Blue
@meh: I need a new keyboard after reading that.
mistermix
@Just Some Fuckhead: What is that guy, then? Serious question.
gogol's wife
@Violet:
See my comment 11, which I sent to myself instead of to you.
Socraticsilence
@Just Some Fuckhead:
I’m sorry- is the guys face not black enough, are his lips not red and “minstrelly” enough for you- is the fricking Al Sharpton wig not a big enough giveaway- tell you what explain what the guy is if that’s not blackface.
MattF
And… you’re a racist for complaining. And… you have no sense of humor. And… the guy is clearly doing a send-up of political correctness. And… it didn’t happen, it’s a forgery, granite countertops!
Linda Featheringill
And some opinionated people in New York think that Dennis Kucinich is undignified. Hah!
Ash Can
Perfect way for him to wrap up his campaign.
Tom Hilton
If he keeps doing idiotic shit like that, Andrew Cuomo just might pull this out. It’ll be close, though.
Edit: and if there’s a guy in blackface, I’m guessing Jane Hamsher is just outside the frame.
Just Some Fuckhead
@Socraticsilence: lol. I had to google Al Sharpton to assure myself that, no, that doesn’t look anything like his hair.
This guy could be a rorschach test for our own biases.
Mary
That poor girl looks terrified.
Dave
Remember when the Republicans used to put forward qualified candidates? Yeah, me neither…
ChrisS
There are a lot of paranoid white people in upstate that are completely clueless to donning blackface for Halloween. Every year, in every city and town, there’s some redneck frat kid that dresses up as Obama or Tiger Woods or Aunt Jemima and hits the bar.
I am not surprised Paladino apparently thought this was a good idea. But remember, the tea parties aren’t the real racists.
Oscar Leroy
Why don’t protesters try to change his mind about AIDS funding, instead of trying to get President Obama to reverse his AIDS funding cuts?
Buffalo Rude
As a son of the same neighborhood as Carl “Horse Fucker” Paladino, this picture does not surprise me. While I wouldn’t say Carl is a product of his environment; the kind of bigotry, sexism and ignorance he has exhibited is pervasive with the remaining white, mostly Catholic, residents. Even more so in the nicer corners of the ‘hood where Carl lives.
South Buffalo, represent!
Sigh.
soonergrunt
@TomG: If you can’t vote for Cuomo, and you know your vote will not actually help somebody win the election, you should vote for that Rent Is Too Damn High guy.
I don’t know what the threshold is in New York for a party to be considered viable and get permanent space on the ballot, but getting The Rent Is Too Damn High party a ballot slot would be all sorts of win. Ymmv, though.
I’m stuck with a ballot full of nut-cases. In Oklahoma, it’s damn near impossible to tell one psychotic on the ballot from the other this election, so I almost always vote against the incumbent. If I must be represented by people who are crazier than shit-house rats, at least the hair and eye color will occasionally change
Just Some Fuckhead
@mistermix: How the hell would I know? I wasn’t there.
Bnut
Dude, Paladino is so getting my vote for fraternity president!
soonergrunt
@Mary: I was thinking that very thing. That ‘smile’ is the kind of thing somebody does when they’re afraid the grimace or frown they feel like making would get them shanked.
Bnut
And btw, if you are going to blackface, don’t be a cheapass and forget to color in the area behind your glasses…
Belafon (formerly anonevent)
@Oscar Leroy: He’s running for Governor?
Buffalo Rude
@Bnut: I’m gonna hold out until he articulates his position on the “Gookie Cookie”.
Randy P
My daughter, who lives in NYC, tells me a governor debate there was dominated by the candidate from the Rentis2damnhigh party. His platform on all positions is, apparently, that Rent is Too Damn High.
By focusing on Paladino, I don’t think we’ve mined all the humor to be had from NY politics. I want to hear more from that guy.
Tom Levenson
@meh: So wins the thread.
soonergrunt
@Randy P:
Well, here you go!
http://www.rentistoodamnhigh.org/
New Yorker
Serious question: do I vote for Jimmy McMillan (aka, The Rent is Too Damn High candidate) or Kristen Davis, the former madam running on the anti-prohibition ticket?
JMC in the ATL
@Oscar Leroy: I eagerly await your fascinating treatise on the ability of a non-incumbent candidate for Governor of New York to set funding levels for international AIDS assistance. In triplicate and before lunchtime, good sir!
soonergrunt
@New Yorker: That depends of course, on your perception of society’s needs.
If you think that people should be able to buy sex legally, go with the former madam. If you think the rent is too damn high, well, you know what to do.
geg6
@Just Some Fuckhead:
Seems pretty clear to me that the guy in blackface is doing the Rent Is Too High guy. And that would be a racist depiction, IMHO.
Socraticsilence
@geg6:
I still say Sharpton- he’s hated in that part of New York, and Rent is to high guy is defined by his facial hair- it’d be like someone doing an Antoine Dodson costume without the Bandana.
Chyron HR
@Oscar Leroy:
Maybe they weren’t paying attention when you explained that Republicans are the real champions of gay rights, and that Democrats secretly hate homosexuals.
Sly
@Randy P:
That’s Jimmy McMillan, a.k.a. Papa Smurf. And, yes, the rent is too damn high.
But that’s not the only part of his platform. He’s a also karate expert and will officiate your wedding ceremony should you decide to marry a shoe.
fucen tarmal
the problem with shaming people for bad behavior is that a line is drawn where the people who haven’t given a fuck, still won’t give a fuck, and the people who enjoy the shaming the most end up looking like the assholes, to the people who may have given a fuck at one point, but are tired of shaming the same shameful person.
at this point, shaming further, even if one can make a case for it, is not just unproductive, but it becomes counterproductive…
palladino would have to rape a goat, that was dressed up as a nun,live on the afternoon news, in order to alter the perceptions of him, and then, by only a little bit.
ruemara
Oh, upstate NY, what hath thou wrought.
morzer
Republicans have clearly given up on the old “I have friends who are black” defense, and switched to “I have friends who are in black face”. Michael Steele can’t be everyone’s BFF, you know.
Allan
I think he’s got on a Speedo under his suit. He is definitely grinding against that girl. Perhaps he thinks she’s a gay guy in drag.
Catsy
@geg6: I think that as we get lost in the weeds of debating who this guy is trying to portray, we’re losing sight of the simple damning fact that he’s a white guy in blackface.
I don’t think his presence at the party necessarily says anything about Paladino other than exacerbating the sense of poor judgment that emanates from this picture. But he’s a white guy in blackface. Outside of certain very, very narrow circumstances, there’s just no legitimate defense for doing that, and even on Halloween it’s in pretty poor taste.
soonergrunt
@Sly: Don’t forget his need for his own cable channel.
I’d watch it.
Violet
@Steve: @gogol’s wife:
Well, I live in a red state, so perhaps my view is a bit skewed. But 45% of the voters did vote for McCain/Palin, which isn’t exactly rejecting her/them decisively. It’s a decisive rejection in political terms, but in reality that’s a lot of people who voted for her/them.
The media did indeed fawn over her, even if the country didn’t as much, but there’s still plenty of fawning what with the upcoming TLC show and her daughter on Dancing With the Stars, etc. If she didn’t bring eyeballs to TV sets, she wouldn’t be given the time of day. So she must do at least that.
wenchacha
I’ll go out on a limb and hope the blackface dude was aiming for his get-up to be a Rentis2damnhigh costume. But then he would have needed the giant handlebar moustache and more elaborate hairstyle than just that stupid wig.
I’m not African-American, but I have to say anybody who rocked Halloween as Jimmy McMillan would have the best costume of the year. A possible other costume would have been white guy with black handlebar ‘stache and hair, Col. Sanders’ suit, with a sign reading “The Rent i$ Too Damn Low!” Sort of a late-entry Billionaire$ for Bu$h thing.
To Carl: “Lee Harvey, you are a madman! When you stole that cow, and your friend tried to make it with the cow. I want to party with you, cowboy!”
ChrisS
I’m starting to hope that fellow NY voters don’t all cast ironic votes for governor and Paladino wins because the rest of the crew split the remaining 73% votes evenly.
I was going to vote for Howie Hawkins as sort of a lifetime achievement award, but I think Cuomo may need the vote.
Steve
@Violet: I guess, then, I’m pretty happy to be living in a country that embraced Michael Dukakis.
MattR
@wenchacha: Sorry, but costume of the year was already awarded to Liam Roybal.
quaint irene
Well.
At least he didn’t need a costume. I swear, even on a good day he looks like an extra in zombie movie.
Tom Q
@New Yorker: The amazing thing (to me) is that the madam is actually running ads. On TV. With frequent airings. Where the fuck does a fringe candidate get money like that — and would she mind sending a little my way?
I suppose it’s possible by phrasing the question “Where the fuck..?”, I might be answering my own query.
John Bird
Well, I’d love to say this would sway the vote, but I don’t think anyone who would be offended by this is even considering voting for Paladino.
Tom Hilton
@Tom Q: I think the money for those ads is coming from Carl Paladino. There was something about that on Maddow the other night; have to try to look it up.
Tom Hilton
Ah, of course: it’s infamous ratfucker Roger Stone (from Wikipedia:
HRA
This is really sad. Potters Field ,the bar where this pic was taken, is at the corner of my one daughter’s street in West Seneca, NY and not in South Buffalo. As a family we love to go there to eat. The food is exceptionally good.
I had to go there a few weeks ago to pick up a daughter’s purse that she forgot to take home. The place was loaded inside and out with Palladino signs and a banner saying Democrats for Palladino. They were having a meeting or rally there later on.
Nothing has made my stomach turn and my headache in recent times more so than having this degenerate up and running for governor. It’s really embarrassing. We have many more decent and more worthy individuals here who could have fit the bill nicely.
Tom Q
@Tom Hilton: Oh, Christ. Thanks for the info.
I actually knew Roger Stone in high school — believe it or not, we were in a summer drama workshop together. (I believe Robert Reich’s sister was also in it — at least, she pronounced her last name the same and was, like him, from South Salem) I’m proud to say the whole group thought Roger was an asshole way back then.
Smith
@ChrisS:
That’s my fear even though to many it sounds paranoid. I rarely trust polls and even though it says Cuomo is ahead by a huge margin, here in upstate NY Paladino has a hell of a lot of supporters. I’m not thrilled with Cuomo but he’s the only one who can reasonably beat Paladino. I know Howie Hawkins is a decent guy and I don’t mind Warren Redlich, but Cuomo needs the votes over both of those guys.
Paris
@soonergrunt: No, please don’t vote for the Rent guy. Parties need 50k votes to maintain ballot access. I’m voting Green since Cuomo has this locked up. They are the only third party with real candidates and real plans. Enough so that the NY media managed to never mention them. You have to go out of your way to mention 6 of seven candidates and consistently ignore the same one. The NY pro-Dem media did just that.
joe from Lowell
@Catsy:
Now, now. Maybe it’s one of those perfectly innocent costumes that involved a white person putting on blackface. Like…umm…uh…little help here?
soonergrunt
@Paris: I live in Oklahoma, so don’t worry about me voting for the The Rent Is Too Damn High party.
I wish I could though.
In Oklahoma, we have the Republicans who are all crazier than shit house rats or more corrupt than Boss Tweed, or we have the Democrats, who’s primary election strategy seems to be to out-crazy and out-winger the Republicans.
catclub
@Dave:
Jacob Javits – 30 years and counting
Arclite
That guy might be dressed up as a black person, but that isn’t blackface as I understand it. The reason blackface is so abhorrent is because it accentuates stereotypes. The area around the mouth is left white or painted red, which isn’t the case here. Is it simply the case that a white man can never dress as a black person and darken there skin? If I wanted to be the Price of Persia or Michael Jackson (prebleaching), I would be called out as a racist if I applied makeup?
This guy’s costume may be in poor taste, but it didn’t strike me as going as far as blackface.
the farmer
ie: Roger Stone – Stone is also one of the Paladino campaign advisers. The Madame and Paladino share the same right wing rat fucker campaign adviser. Go figure that.
soonergrunt @Paris: I live in Oklahoma, so don’t worry about me voting for the The Rent Is Too Damn High party. I wish I could though.
If you plan to vote in NY don’t listen to this kind of hairbrained bullshit. A vote for The Rent Is Too Damn High Guy amounts to nothing more than a vote for Carl Paladino. Same with the Manhattan Madame vote.

Big Day
Black Newt Gingrich? Paladino clearly went as Frank Booth.
JWL
I really don’t care about NY politics. I almost hope this clown pulls off an upset, that I will continued to be entertained.
Roger Stone
Hey Hilton- I remeber you. Except it was you we all thought was an asshole. Anyway was quite sure you were dead since you appear to have accomplished nothing in the intervening years– other than going on lefty blogs and critcizing people who have accomplished something in their craft.
must be tough to be – nobody.
Vote for Andrew Cuomo, expect change, get disappointed.
Dont bitch when nothing changes.
I will have returned to sunny Florida.
Roger Stone
Kermit
Vote for Howie Hawkins if you are a progressive and care about the planet and jobs. Cuomo is going to win in a landslide so you don’t have to worry about Paladino, invest your vote in a positive message.
Davis is just another play thing for Roger Stone, selling women is just like playing Wall Street, and Jimmy McMillen sounds funny on you tube but he is bonkers if you listen to him for more than two minutes. Why the Board of Elections allowed him on the ballot when he didn’t collect enough signatures or even meet the legal requirements to run (he has no Lt. Governor candidate) is beyond me.
Tom Hilton
@Roger Stone: Okay, that was extremely surreal (assuming it was really Roger Stone), since a) I’m not the one who knew him in high school, b) I do have a good friend from college also named Roger Stone and c) also in the political consulting business who d) has on occasion been mistaken for the evil Roger Stone.
