Terrific video. And even a Charlie look alike Aussie Terrier.
I do love dogs and don’t care who knows it. And would take them all if I could, no exceptions.

Great cause!

@stuckinred:
Yep. CAAR is awesome. No two ways about it
This was on sale at the beer store. Possibly the worst be I have ever had that wasn’t swill or experimental. Struggling to find a reason to finish it.

@Ailuridae: Makes me glad I haven’t had a drink in 20 years!

Happy doggies! I love my calendar. You’ll love yours too.

@Ailuridae: Drink it for the alcohol. Have you ever had Coy International beer? I don’t know if it is still made, but it is the single worst beer I have ever had.

I had one of these last night. It was interesting with a good aftertaste.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Yeah I am pretty sure I had a Coy on my first trip to New Orleians like 15 years ago. It was really bad but it was also cheap domestic swill.
Luckily I only bought one of these Pale Ales. Now comes the old reliable.
This has convinced me to get a smart phone though. If i had a beer application there is no way I would have ever bought this.

The BJ pet calendars I gave as gifts were big hits! Although, funny thing: I gave one to a friend who volunteers at a local no-kill shelter, and she gave me one of their calendars! But no harm, much mirth, and two worthy causes benefitted a little.

Video makes me happy, like most of those awesome doggies in it.
This is my whole take on the Daley nontroversy.
A few days ago I had the pleasure of taking pictures at a swearing in ceremony for some officers. Family members are often the ones who get to pin their new shields on, so many times, the place is jam packed with kids, parents, spouses, etc. One of the cops had his lovely daughter pin his on. She made her way carefully up to the dias and nearly collapsed as she tried to lift herself up the 1 step to reach him. Why? She has cancer. Brain cancer. She’s also the light and love of her dad. It took 2 people to catch her, steady her feet, so she could stand again and then keep her safe to take the shield and honor her dad. Her pride in her father, his love and fear for her health was all over their faces. In an instant, I understood all the more keenly what’s at stake with the House in Teapublican hands. There are people in charge that look at the medical care this child needs and see nothing more than a burden. A burden to extremely profitable corporations. If she has the blessing of a remission, grows up and heads off to college, they see her extended coverage as another burden to insurers. The prevention of her as an adult from being denied basic coverage because she has a pre-existing condition, is yet another crime against business. They look at the guarantees of decent insurance and pay with pensions, for doing a very dangerous job for a father with such a fragile child, and see nothing more than wastrel, a taker, a leech on the tax payer.
For the left, the progressives, for the Democrats, for anyone who has a brain and a heart left after the past few years to be consumed with anger, in fact to expend a minute on fretting over a staffing choice that has naught to do with the real issues confronting working people, is a horrible waste. Considering the jackals and lunatics in power right now, with their fingers on the triggers, we must be united in opposing them. To do otherwise is not just indulgence, it is a small minded, heartless shame that discredits everything that being progressive and left means. I do not care that Daley has worked in a bank. I could care less about bipartisanship or bully pulpits or who called who a name. I’m interested in results and taking the fight to the enemy that has no qualms about killing the poor, working and middle classes via limited health care access, poisoned food and water, stagnant wages and rampant fear and disinformation. The fact that these people ever made their way into the House should be more than enough of a goad to stop the rock throwing and pie fights and get our asses in gear with a non-stop campaign to point out their hateful, dangerous bullshit by using their districts papers and every sort of media possible.
Ad that’s my 20¢, since it’s too long to be 2.

Ish. Color of Guiness, but not the body. Taste of coffee and cocoa, but no head and a weird finish. The guy I was drinking with said he liked it, but he’s a new transplant from NE, so YMMV.
Worth a pint at a pub to try, but I wouldn’t buy a sixer.

@thread: apropos of very little, You know how that thing the ‘Pukes are doing is called “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act”?
And you know how we sometimes like to insert the word “fucking” into phrases and people’s names, like “Tea Fucking Party” or “Sarah Fucking Palin”?
It would be fun to mix those up a little bit.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Yeah. I drink them almost exclusively in WI. I am not as big of a fan of the Spotted Cow as most but their entire lineup is excellent. I also have a lot of affection for both Capital and Lakefront line out of WI with the latter giving easily the best brewery tours I’ve ever had..
Ailuridae
@kdaug:
Southern Star is pretty consistently excellent right? I’m not a big stout guy outside of Guinness
Omnes Omnibus
@Ailuridae: Capital is only a hop, skip, and a jump from me, so I have been known to have one or two. We keep Spotted Cow in the house most of the time because it is a good all-a-rounder; nice to give to visitors, no matter what type of beer they like. Kind of like having a merlot around the house.

@stuckinred: One of the local stations said Athens could get six inches of snow. The snow is okay, although a nuisance because the city doesn’t plow side streets, but ice would be awful.

@ruemara:
Perception is everything and in our current state of affairs – particularly because of the financial crisis – anyone who works or has worked for a major bank or on Wall Street is perceived as corrupt & greedy. Now, that may be true of a substantial number of individuals in those arenas. Goldman, JP, Citi, & the like, don’t give us any reason to think differently of them & they definitely give those who are not corrupt or greedy a bad rep. That’s not to say that banks and Wall Street should be left off the hook, but I think it’s important to not paint every person who has every worked in those industries as the devil.
Laura W.
@Linda Featheringill: Linda, John posted an update, but about $5400 was raised last year! Really exciting were the last three months thanks to the amazing support for the calendar and the people who did so much holiday shopping in there:
October $740
November $1743 (To be mailed next week.)
December $860 (To be received 2/15)
I want to put in a big plug for following CAAR at FaceBook. They are doing a great job of using it to network for fosters and rescue orgs. It’s also a good way to get a sense of how hard just a few very tireless and dedicated people are working in this little group, and how much every dollar they are given counts. When you realize it all was just sort of getting off the ground as an official non-profit in Aug. of 2009 when BJ jumped on the Little Bitsy bandwagon, it’s been a huge year for them.
Most importantly, the Balloon Juice CafePress store is the most successful fund raising entity they have right now, aside from personal donations. It takes a lot of people hours and effort on the ground at a fundraiser for them to come close to what the BJ store can net in a good month while we all do our share in our jammies from our couches and beds. Please know that Evelyn Bridges and her associates are always very quick to express deep gratitude to John and the whole community for each and every dollar we send their way!

@SiubhanDuinne: Yes. Since it has been almost 18 years, I assume you are okay.

Oh, that’s all excellent news! I still need to buy my Lily mug. Been so busy with family issues and now a health issue for me that I haven’t done it.
Has it been that long? I remember getting everyone I know to powervote for Little Bitsy. How’s Little Bitsy doing, anyway? Did they ever get anything from that contest?
kdaug
@Ailuridae: Yeah, SS is an excellent brewer, and the Hatchet’s a well-crafted beer, lots of complexity and undertones. It’s just not much to my taste.
But it’d be a mistake to label it a “stout” – think more Shiner, less Guinness. It’s got a dark color, but a mid-to-light body. And I felt the coffee taste was a bit much.
But like I said, worth a pint if you can find it, and judge for yourself. It’s definitely a good beer.

@Violet: Bitsy is doing great, Violet (and am hoping your health issue is not too worrisome?), and I am happy to say I finally got to meet her mom, Sylvia, in early October at a CAAR fundraiser. She is just as adorable as you knew she was. I will never forget her jumping into threads to mix it up with BOB in an effort to gain his vote! We actually howled about that at the fundraiser. You were like Bitsy’s own Chief of Staff, huh?
She did get her $500 for winning week 12, but not until a lot of legal crap had to go down. She is not even sure if the overall winner ever got anything! I recall some on this board predicted that sort of thing, but as far as CAAR and Bitsy are concerned, they were the true winners. All the on and offline community mobilization and energy generated encouraged Evelyn to name her group and apply for 501(c)(3) status, the logo was born, the BJ CafePress store opened, and, um…whatever happens next will be good too!
Here’s a little sweet trip down memory lane. The Bitsy video for the Cutest Dog competition.

Goddess willing, your kitty is there and I did not fuck something up. It’s been a lot of sleeps since then.
CAAR does rescue cats too. They decided that their primary mission would be to pull animals out of the abysmal Transylvania Animal Shelter and get them into foster homes and boarding and then network with out-of-area groups that would take them into their systems. Cats don’t seem to make it into the shelter very often.
Here is a good post and an interview with Evelyn that explains her vision very nicely.

I wanted to thank everyone again for all your thoughts and prayers during the week. The police charged a guy who did odd jobs for her with 1st Degree Pre-meditated murder on Wed. They assured her family that they had tons of DNA evidence, and he proffered a confession. This was a tremendous relief for her sister, and well for all of us.
Apparently he had gone to her home Sunday afternoon to hang something for her, and got angry about something and beat her to death with his hammer and fists.
They had the visitation at the funeral home tonight and several hundred folks had come by the time I left at 7. So her family was kinda overwhelmed with the kindness and love they’ve received this week. We even saw neighbors who moved 25+ years ago.
The funeral is in the morning and after the internment we’re all having a wake at her brother and brother in laws house. I brined a turkey breast in Jack Daniels and smoked it this afternoon. And will take that.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you all again. Your kindness to me has been very needed. All of my personal touchstones have been reeling this week, so it helped me help my friend’s family and keep my shit together, since you guys were my outlet this week. xoxoxo

Hey Cole, another shiny new torture post ready to go. Hooray torture. And it doesn’t even require a Greenwald link to suck all the air out of the room.
I, for one, am proud to be an American, where at least I know our government can lean on our client states to beat the shit out of me, threaten my family, keep me imprisoned indefinitely without charge, and bar me reentry into the country until I give the FBI the specific testimony they want to hear.
