Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

In my day, never was longer.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

How stupid are these people?

This fight is for everything.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The National Guard is not Batman.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Rumors of My Demise

Have been greatly overstated. I am alive and kicking, but I am just up to my armpits with real life responsibilities. Missing a week was disastrous, and I am still in the process of catching up.

Long story short- I am teaching two online courses, and I radically underestimated the amount of work that needed to be done and how much it would be to grade all of it. Each week, I get 100 papers, and every 4th week I get 100 papers and 100 exams. Add to that all the e-mail correspondence, and being sick when I was already behind (as I always am) killed me,.

Soo… the blog has taken a portside list with Tim at the helm, but I should be back to it in no time (probably tomorrow). To be brutally honest, I can’t wait- I have not been reading blogs (I have enough to read) the last few days, have not been paying attention to the news, and I will gladly get back to blogging.

Being a leftie, I quite like Tim’s portside tilt – but I’m relieved to hear from you, because your absence was starting to be alarming.

Just out of curiosity, what subjects do you teach and what grade level?

Port makes you list to the left. Boone’s Farm Apple Wine to the right.

Looks like John is back just in time for the latest Zogby Poll findings. Looks like the War President’s approval number there is back down into the 30s. 38% to be exact. Joins a whole raft of other polls that also show the Baffled Bush slip sliding his way down into the 30s.

The CBS News Poll shows him at 34%, which is probably about right.

Oh yes, Tim is just sooooooo liberal. Expecting competence from government is certainly a liberal issue. And perhaps the only thing more liberal is SCIENCE.

Heck, even when Tim tries to drum up working-man cred by blogging about something as fundamentally American as beer, what does he talk about? Yep, a bunch of faggy little Eurobeers.

Hurry up and get back, John, before Tim invites Cindy Sheehan to guest-blog.

    Glad you’re feeling better John.

Hopefully tomorrow you’ll be back clapping louder than ever just in time to save those poor Iraqis from self mutilation.

Another week of illness and the failure of the Iraq War would have been laid at your feet.

Great — another right-wing blogger who doesn’t pay any attention to the news. At least this one admits it.

    Welcome back, John!

    John,

Now that you’re officially a confused Republican, maybe you need a Malkinite to really provide balance. Or give DougJ guest posting. Otherwise we spend all weekend with nothing to do but dream about Belgian beers.

Just for the record, if you are ever trying to parse IIS log files using Logparser v2.2 and want to convert the date, time stamps to local time rather than UTC… use this syntax:

    TO_LOCALTIME(TO_TIMESTAMP(ADD(to_string(date, ‘yyyy-MM-dd ‘), TO_STRING(time, ‘hh:mm:ss’)), ‘yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss’)) as localtime

I just spent the last 15 minutes figuring out if that would work or not before I realized I had forgotten a space. :-)

John is a military recruiter and he has just been re-assigned to Harvard Law School

    Bwa-ha-ha

By the way, John Roberts just schooled law professors at 36 top-flight schools in “provide for the general defence”

It’s a good day to be an American

This isn’t Britain, my friend. Here in the United *S*tates of American we spell it Defense.

Besides, the decision was 8-0. If you’re trying to turn that into a partisan battle, uhh, you’re just weird.

Come back John! A voice of reason in a sea of chaos. Its surprising how much this Green Party member agrees with your opinions.

It was a hard choice between Libertarians and The Greens but Dems and Repubs were just tow sides of the sem coin so I had to get out. It just seemed that the Greens had a nobler cause than the others so . . . here I am. I guess I’m a GINO

    The Other Steve:

Read the Constitution: It spells it “Defence” and Chief Justice John Roberts spelled it that way.

I agree. Nothing partisan. All 8 (Alito was ineligible) were behind Roberts (no concurring etc.) and this was a 1994 law passed by a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate, and signed by a Democratic president.

I just love that the people in charge of the 36 Elite Law Schools were just humiliated. Maybe they need to read what the Constitution actually says, beginning with the preamble. Pretty bad when the chief justice preambles you

Bah, the Constitution. That’s because those goat heads who wrote it were still suffering from their British school teachers.

    It’s DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!

None of this DEFENCE crap. There is no Fence in DEFENSE!

I just love that the people in charge of the 36 Elite Law Schools were just humiliated. Maybe they need to read what the Constitution actually says, beginning with the preamble. Pretty bad when the chief justice preambles you

It does kind of show the hypocrisy of Roberts though, because the preamble is supposedly non-binding in all other conservative arguments.
