It certainly seems like this has been a long process:
The defense began its case today in the trial of Saddam Hussein after the former president was formally charged by the judge with crimes against humanity and Mr. Hussein responded by defiantly refusing to enter a plea.
***In Mr. Hussein’s trial, before the defense began calling witnesses, the lead judge in the case, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, called the eight defendants into court one by one to read them the indictment that was being formally lodged against them on the basis of the case presented by the prosecutors over the last seven months. In the Iraqi system, the final charges that defendants face are determined by judges at the trial’s midpoint.
I guess what is important is that regardless the outcome (which, being as jaded as I am, is pretty clear), is that people accept the outome. I am not sure if the length of the trial will help to make people feel more comfortable with the verdict, whatver it may be, but if it does, it is probably worth the wait.

It is important, because the whole place might break into civil war and sectarian violence interrupted basic services if the process becomes tainted. Whoops.

Punchy
Who didn’t know the outcome of this trial from the very second they pulled his ass out of the ground?
Death, taxes, Republican corruption, Sadam found guilty of everything and anything he’s indicted on…few things are such givens.
Vlad
It would almost be worth letting a genocidal dictator go free, just to see the response to a Not Guilty verdict.
Punchy
I think you’d literally see–simultaneously–both O’Lielly and Hannity’s head explode from the heat/anger. Which, of course, is two positives for the one negative.
And if you think this trial is a circus, just wait until he’s actually about to be strapped in/hung up/fired upon…I bet that’s broadcast on every station in America…
The Other Steve
Again, I will reiterate.
It would have been better for everyone if Saddam’s body were found hanging from a lamppost.

You can bet SH mentions from whence he got the gas and the biological weapons— every chance he gets. That is why we don’t see much of the trial.
Like at Nürnberg, where Bomber Harris should have been tried too, these show trials have their element of hypocrisy. Even with a monster like SH.
We pins our sins to these guys too, and as with the Judas Goat, we send them off into the mountains.
