    I wish! Well, even though I’m on Eastern Time, I’m glad I can get to work late enough that I haven’t worked a full day yet. But I’d still rather go home.

    I’ve been unable to focus on anything since I got back from my last trip. In a just world, I would be paid just to travel, or something.

    You’re right! In fact, in 5 more minutes I’ll be outta here, but I have to drop off a battery backup to a friend who is still without power here in MD. Not likely to get it until Thursday, either.

    That’s the status here: spotty areas still without power, but that’s still several 10s of thousands of homes. We’re much better off than NY/VT, though.

    I remember being with a group of well-meaning white ladies who referred to a group of visiting Ugandan students as “African Americans.” That created a few quizzical looks from the students.

    Glenn Beck looks like a pig and acts like a pig. With apologies to pigs, which are probably much nicer than Beck is. But perhaps we should call his color or race “piggy pink.”

    So there’s a reasonably good chance we’ll have a tropical system develop in the Gulf in the near future. Labor Day weekend could be a washout for some places in the Gulf. Right now models are all over the place. Texans are really hoping the system has rain and decides to pay them a visit.

I have a feisty little female that will come down to the feeder and then sit on my green plastic trellis right next to it and defend it from all comers. She has no problem chasing off any other HB that even contemplates coming down and feeding. Ever seen that before?

    We’ve got ruby throated hummingbirds and oh, my are they territorial! They’ll defend that feeder from any other HB that gets close. I’ve been buzzed by one HB chasing the other away from the feeder. Got so close as they were tearing by that I even ducked. In my experience, that’s pretty typical.

    Thanks Violet. I have often seen people post pictures of a feeder being surrounded by several HB but they must not be the Ruby Throated. This female is hilarious, she will even chase off her mate if the mood takes her.

    We don’t get Ruby Throated in the western US, but generally, most Hummingbirds are highly territorial for feeding grounds. In the Hummingbird case, that would be nectar producing flowers. And to them, a feeder is just a big flower. Male or female birds, often in mating pairs will take turns guarding a flower when they are raising young. Different species have different levels of aggression, such as the Rufous out west here, that are the big bullies amongst our hummers. But the other species do it too, guard flowers. With the tiny Caliope, needing to be a little craftier to get a feeding while the others are wasting time fighting each other, it slips in for a drink.

    In NorCal we have Annas as year round residents. Been feeding them for over 20 years at two to three feeders. Towards the end of June the Rufus’ breeze into town and then the shit really flys. Literally. We have to refill those damn feeders two to three times per day. The Rufus’ fave tactic is to dive bomb every other Rufus and Anna with tails flared, then hover about while twittering loudly, as if they’re taunting; cum’on, you want a piece of this?

    They are smaller than the Annas but their perpetual anger makes them evenly matched. It is a riot to watch which makes the refilling job rewarding. The Rufus’ leave after about three weeks. We know this because the feeders only have to be filled once a day. And it’s much quieter.

    @cathyx: No. I raised two Dobermans. The first one developed lymphosarcoma at the age of 11, and was “put to sleep” six months later when the pain became unmanageable. The second one also died at 11-1/2, but she probably would have lived at least a couple more years, except that the place we boarded her at didn’t take good care of her and she ended up with bloat and torsion, which resulted in a failing liver. I’ve heard of Dobes living to be 12 or 13, and I personally knew one that made it to 15. He moved a lot slower in those last couple of years, but he certainly appeared to be a happy dog.

    @John Cole: The breed originally had its ears trimmed for its work as a guard dog. The floppy ear was not as good for sound localization in a dog that needed to be alert to intruders. The original cuts made the ears significantly shorter than the show cuts of today.

    @PurpleGirl: That’s basically true. Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes live for an average of 7 years. The larger of the Molosser breeds (English Mastiff, St. Bernard, Newfoundland) average about 8 years. A toy poodle can live to be 20, but the highest minimum is generally 15 years, and that is achieved by breeds belong to the toy group, or smaller breed from the terrier and non-sporting groups. Personally, I don’t begrudge any dog a long life, but it doesn’t seem fair that a Chihuahua lives to be 15+, but a Newfoundland would be lucky to make it to 12.
