Reason #5437 that professional boxing is a joke compared to MMA. Even their “superfights” turn out like shit.
I’d throw down a shout out for my beloved Seahawks but I’ve already resigned myself to a long, miserable season likely followed by several more “rebuilding” years.
Being a sportsfan is hard, miserable work.
Cacti
Yeah, Mayweather’s a punk…
For tagging the guy who had just given him a flying headbutt.

I’m expecting the Cowboys to build a three touchdown lead in the first 3 1/2 quarters, only to have Romo serve up as many interceptions as it takes for San Fran to overtake them in the fourth. Followed by a vote of confidence from the coach and the other players.
sstarr
Ahem. Go, Seahawks. I am completely sure that Tarvaris Jackson will dominate the Steelers today. And if he doesn’t, why Charlie Whitehurst is waiting in the wings. So many weapons.
Now I’ll just go off into a corner and cry.

Hey Omnes, the search on PackerChatters.com sux. Any chance you have that thread up and can post a link? Maybe if it’s to the thread and not the streamer it won’t get moderateddeded.

Spoken like a true Seahawk fan. Well done.
We should also take this moment to recognize that the refs of today’s game are the same crew who stole the ’05 Uberbowl from the Seahawks and gave it to Rapelesberger and crew.

Thanks for trying, nonetheless. I think I found one or two that should work.

Yeah, it’s the rare Sunday when I’m grateful the [choke, gag] Raiders are on instead of the ‘hawks because of the ridiculous NFL teevee rulz. Saves me the chore of watching the clusterfark.
I seriously don’t know what they were thinking of when they “strategized” fixing the QB situation. Yeah, that worked. Having the youngest O-line the league has seen the last decade and a half ain’t helping, either.
Loneoak
Got it, altho it ain’t HD. More like Tecmo Bowl.

Look, Mayweather took an intentional headbutt AND an overhand left (that hit his glove) that came AFTER Cortez broke them up. Not to mention that Ortiz had attempted a headbutt earlier in the fight (he was getting his ass kicked for the whole fight and was being systematically broken down). It was Ortiz who hugged/kissed Mayweather, who wanted none of it. After Cortez said “Let’s go”, Ortiz tried to hug him AGAIN (and Floyd had put his hands up at this point), so he was well within his rights to deck him.
Yeah, Mayweather is not a very nice person, but inside the ring, he is a consummate professional. You want to hug and touch gloves after every exchange or foul, go the UFC.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Little Floyd isn’t exactly beloved back home here- his Uncle Jeff is an old friend, and I don’t like the kid myself- but the punk in this case is Ortiz. There was as much wrong with that combo after they tapped gloves as there is when a boxer charges across the ring at the opening bell and starts throwing punches.

So, as I was saying. I’m expecting the Cowboys to build a huge lead until Romo goes on a turnover orgy late in the fourth quarter. Jerry Jones will give Tony a vote of confidence after the game.
joeyess
Yes, Mayweather is a punk. He’s also a coward. If I were Manny Pacquiao I’d call that biaaaatch every day and leave taunting messages on his voice mail. I’d do every thing in my power to get that overpaid, punk-ast, prima donna to stop ducking me and get in the ring and take the ass whoopin’ he’s got coming.
Justin Morton
It’s a boxing match, for Christ’s sake. What was Ortiz thinking? He just head butts the guy, and then is like “We’re cool, man. We’re cool.” He didn’t think Mayweather might still be a little upset. Keep those gloves up. Always.
Not a Mayweather fan. But I think he’s taking more heat than he deserves. Also, I loved his exchange with Larry Miller. And Miller’s response.
joeyess
@sstarr:
If I were you, I’d hope for the worst. The Seahawks are deeply involved in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.
Joel
Cam Newton is looking awesome. I have to root for the guy, simply to honor my depth of hatred for the NCAA. Also, Donovan Mcnabb needs to retire. He’s looking like Drew Bledsoe during his second season in Dallas.
joeyess
@Justin Morton: It’s Larry Merchant and Mayweather is a punk.
Ben Cisco (mobile)
TD, recovered fumble on kickoff, FG. Looks like Bradshaw is gonna get served another platter of crow.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@joeyess:
All Manny has to do is agree to the drug test. He does that and Little Floyd still backs out, I’ll agree with you.
joeyess
Well…. The Chiefs, in the first 2 weeks of the season have lost their starting tight end, their best safety and just a moment ago their best running back in Jamaal Charles. Plus we have a jagoff for a quarterback. Now we’re deep in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Okay, it’s Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood now. GO! PACK! GO!

RIP Dave Gavitt, a good man who had a huge positive impact on a game I love. Without the Big East, college basketball wouldn’t be where it is, and the Big East was Dave Gavitt’s idea.
Cacti
@joeyess:
All Freddie Roach and his latest roid-head, err, fighter have to do is agree to blood tests in the last 7 days before the fight.
Now why would a Freddie Roach fighter not want to do something like that?…cough…James Toney…cough…Justin Fortune.
joeyess
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): That’s bullshit. Mayweather hasn’t asked that of any of his other opponents. Not one. He’s ducking him. As an added aside, Mayweather demanded that Manny use Mayweather’s physician to administer the testing.
Mayweather is a punk. He showed it last night.
Joel
@joeyess: You forgot letting Brian Waters walk. Adding to all that, the Chiefs weren’t as good as their record indicated last year. They were going to be my “under” pick in the futures this year, but Miami (o/e at 7.5 wins), with their improving divisional opponents, was more appealing.
MikeJ
Seahawks vs Steelers, M’s v Rangers.
Gonna be a sad day for sports in Jet city.
Cacti
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
He won’t do it because blood testing in the week before a fight would “make him feel weak”.
And Barry Bonds really believed he was being given flaxseed oil. lol
Mark S.
I dislike Floyd and he knows he’d get his ass kicked by Manny but he didn’t do anything wrong in that fight.
Justin Morton
@joeyess Whatever. I don’t follow boxing.

Fuuuck. Did most of the team stay in Green Bay?
Omnes Omnibus
@Loneoak: They need to get a handle on this thing quickly.
joeyess
@Justin Morton: then why are you expressing an opinion as if it were informed?
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@joeyess:
Pacquaio hasn’t exactly countered with an offer to have tests performed by a neutral party, either.
And Floyd was kicking Ortiz’s ass before the head-butt. Punk move or not, he was definitely the better boxer last night.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
Pound the rock Bears!
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
Ack!
Loneoak
Lol, I hate sports mixed metaphors. “McCarthy talked about wanting to get Rodgers more snaps, more attempts at the plate.” Really, do you need baseball to explain football?
“McCarthy wanted to be sure that Rodgers got in more punches, or slam dunks if you will. If the Packers have too many own goals, they may not make it to the winner’s circle following a tough final lap.” Although BJ Raji probably does piss like a racehorse.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Now we’re looking good!
Keith
@Mark S.: Manny wouldn’t get close to Mayweather, much like Marquez failed to. He’s got Ortiz’s power in a frame 2 divisions (at least) smaller. He would eat check-hooks all night long if he tried to rush in, and if not, he would get picked apart from the outside. Lead rights just like last night.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Loneoak:
More shots on goal. More cards in the hand.
Cacti
@Keith:

Andy and Omnes, did you guys see this in the Onion a few weeks ago? Good stuff.
joeyess
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): I think Mayweather was clearly the better fighter last night. He’s still a punk.
Fight Manny. That’s all he has to do…… Fight Manny.
He won’t. He wants his unblemished record when he retires. Fighting Manny won’t make that possible.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Loneoak:
Anything you want to say to the future captain of the Pioneers football team (EGRHS Class of 2020)? He’s sitting right neet to me.
Omnes Omnibus
@Loneoak: That is funny. And this defensive series looked a lot better.
Loneoak
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
So, he’s like 10? I’d probably say that the great thing about EGR is that you can still be cool and excel in something other than sports, or at least also with sports. Don’t be one-dimensional. Which is a good principle in life, but for some reason the culture at East allows football stars and debate stars. So you might as well be both and take advantage of it.
Cacti
@joeyess:
And he just has to trust in the integrity of a Freddie Roach fighter to make that happen.
I hear Virgil Hill, James Toney, and Justin Fortune will all give Manny a character reference in lieu of blood testing.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@joeyess:
I said it up top, but it bears repeating: I’ve got no love for Little Floyd. That said, I don’t think that Pacquaio is necessarily a better boxer.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Loneoak:
He’s an excellent cook- a real foodie. He and mom made granola earlier this week, and he decided to go with dried cherries and currants(!) rather than raisins. I think he’d rather be a chef than anything else.
Justin Morton
@joeyess Isn’t that why Al Gore invented the internet? To allow people like myself to express opinions on areas of which I have no knowledge. :)

We watched Tron Legacy last night at home. Very pretty. Very boring. Loads of exposition that exposed almost nothing. No romance. No interesting ideas that didn’t come with a dude walking ahead of them carrying a flashing INTERESTING IDEA sign, but then failed to pay off. There were the makings of a good movie in there but, alas, we’ll never know what that movie would look like. I wondered how this concept could have gotten the expensive warm-over treatment. Until the credits. Disney: purveyor of mediocre entertainment to the middlebrow masses. They’ll make another one, and I will not care.

Was there some kind of incident that denotes their new devotion to the clean business of Don King and Bob Frum?
Jesus, people. Really.
Mayweather has to fight Manny. He won’t live it down if he doesn’t. It looks like he’s ducking him. If Manny wins then Floyd can whine and bitch about drug tests and the like. If Floyd wins, he can whine and moan about not getting any respect from that titan of sports journalism Larry Merchant.

Aw, I bet you say that every year.
Interesting cover story in The Atlantic regarding college sports. May not be anything new to the folks that consume sports 24/7, but for the rest of us (even those of us with some understanding from the inside) it’s very interesting. My short takeway: they’ve dumped so much money in college sports that the whole system is now going to unravel in the courts. You just can’t dump that much money from the free market into a system that operates on such fundamentally different principles and not blow it up. So, now there’s a group of folks that are going to intentionally blow it up.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)

@burnspbesq: And there’s some hidden truth in your analogy. The cheerleaders aren’t worth chasing, as they usually want to be chased, and should you catch them they’d just as soon fuck you over as fuck you. You want to chase the girls soccer team, as they’re more likely to want to be caught, and good things result from that.
UConn should focus on a divisions that wants them – they’ll get farther.
Oh, yeah, Duke, that’s your other problem – the USC of the east coast can similarly DIAF.

@Martin: The sooner everyone learns that D-III is the only place where real amateur college sports are played the better.

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): I knew that would draw you out :)

@Omnes Omnibus: My pal’s son played at Wisc-Whitewater. $12 admission for the national championship game at the Stagg Bowl!

@Martin:
Dude, at my high school the cheerleaders mostly had 1300-plus SAT scores and ended up in the Ivy League. They were very much worth chasing.

Wilfork with a pick!

Cowboys are kinda sucking, but it looks like San Fran might let them off the hook.

Ok, sorry sometimes it looks like the iPad isn’t doing anything, and I press submit again. Stupid safari.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Raven (formerly stuckinred):
Hey, uh….How did those Bears do today?
Mark B.
Blessing in disguise. Romo is hurt and won’t play the 2nd half.
Ah who am I kidding. There’s no disguise.
Corner Stone
@Mark B.: did you jailbreak yours?
I’m just wondering because so far I can’t see the reason to.
Mark B.
Corner Stone: Nope, I don’t see any real reason to. I have a jail broke phone that I use for overseas travel, but I don’t see any real reason to do that to the pad.

Dallas ties it up. San Fran is gift wrapping this game.

@Omnes Omnibus:
This. D-I is just a minor league with an insanely low salary cap.

I just found out by going to nytimes.com to gloat over the great Jets victory. This did not take long at all. I am not pleased to have allegiance to traitors like Boston College.
Also too, Weiland and Lackey starting tomorrow. I anticipate a long, hard day.
Mark B.
That’s terrible coaching, taking a field goal over a chance to score a touch and take more time off the clock. But despite San Fran’s best efforts to give this away, I think the ‘Boys might just suck too much to take it.

@asiangrrlMN:
Seconded. That was the LOL of this thread.

Dallas/San Fran:Overtime! Entertaining game to watch. Some great plays and terrible plays by both teams.

Romo … live by the sword, die by the sword. This week, the gambles paid off. And man, I know Holley isn’t really an NFL level receiver, but they still need to cover him. Great day for him.

Wow. College football is way different in Canada

Scroll down the page and take a look at the stadium sizes. (U of C, U of R, and McGill’s stadiums are shared with the local CFL teams). I was near U of T’s Varsity stadium yesterday, and the stands were only half full for the football game.

@4jkb4ia:
The only downside I see for either Cuse or Pitt is that John Desko’s life becomes much more difficult. He goes from a conference with an AQ and only three other decent teams to a league with no AQ and typically four of the top six teams in the country. I may have to fly in for the first Duke-Cuse games at the Carrier Dome in men’s basketball and men’s lax.
The Backyard Brawl will continue. It’ll be a non-conference game in September.
Pitt’s basketball players will adjust to ACC officiating right quick, or they will finish games with four walk-ons on the floor.

We can see that the NFC West is absolutely as wide open as every other year. I was so depressed about Lackey that I forgot I was supposed to be excited about the Rams on MNF. But my husband has a meeting tomorrow where he will find out if there is work for him next year. I will just forget this is something I didn’t want to tell John because he is probably not reading this thread anymore.
@burnspbesq: No, there really is no downside in the ACC, especially for football. It is just as sad to see the Big East go as to see the Big Eight go (that’s the way it is looking). Legend and tradition are one of the few nice things about college sports.
