    I honestly didn’t think Colt McCoy had what it takes to be a pro quarterback. Not big enough and not a huge arm. Goes to show what I know. Colt’s little brother isn’t too bad, either.

    Cowboys won a sloppy game in overtime against the really incompetent Niners. This week, Romo turned in a great performance at the end of the game … exact opposite of last week. Given how many injuries the Cowboys had, a great win for them. It’s gotta sting for the 49ers.

    Why the heck you take a field goal when you could have a first down at the 20 a mystery to me. Terrible coaching by Harbaugh. Worst thing that could have happened is that you take a few more minutes off the clock and attempt the FG again from much closer. I know it’s not guaranteed, but not letting your offense play really showed how little confidence Harbaugh has in the offense. I kind of expected them to fold their tent after that move.

    @kindness: Honestly, I didn’t see either team really deserving the win, since both made some terrible plays at times. But San Fran, leaving the guy nobody ever heard of before today* completely uncovered, made the last mistake, and lost the game because of it.

    *I kid … people in Dallas have heard of Holley, but he just plays on special teams. He only gets to play receiver if a bunch of guys get hurt … Hey!

    Made Mexican today for the football games — shredded chicken in jalapeno lime sauce, chorizo sausage with poblanos and cheese all melty, and Mexican cole slaw with cilantro. Had planned on beer as the drink but gin and tonics made an admirable substitute.

    Enjoyed watching the Jets today, although the Sanchize needs to smooth a few wrinkles out. Hated the Chargers game — they frigging gave it away. Somehow a really excellent bunch of players is not able to score on 5 successive drives into the red zone and commits stupid penalties at critical moments. Norv Turner for dud coach of the year. Not that I like the Chargers, it’s just that they have the talent to beat the stupid Pats and they didn’t for really dumb reasons. Grrrrr.

    Wrong. The Niners are not yesteryear’s pathetic losers. They’re not all that bad. I speak as a long-toothed native San Franciscan, and lifelong 49er fan.

    The team might even win the division this year. As much as I respect Bradford and the Rams offense, they’re gettable. Remember, the Saints got knocked off in the playoffs by a 7-9 Seattle team.

    Parity. I must admit, I dig it.

    @JWL: I appreciate what you’re saying, but I just don’t see Alex Smith ever developing as a decent NFL QB. If he hasn’t by now, he probably never will. And Harbaugh … he made some terrible coaching calls today.

    I see them as a team that has some talent, but not a playoff team … clearly better than they were under Singletary … but still only mediocre. BTW, I rate the Cowboys at about the same level. I expect them to be about 8-8, although they might get better if Rex Ryan’s radical defense ends really working. But with the number of rookies the Cowboys have on the starting offensive line, I expect them to struggle on offense all year.

    P.S. Bradford is overrated. He’s at least a year away. Maybe two. He’s going to be good eventually, but he’s not there yet.

    Or Mr. Pop for Iggy. I wonder how they handle singularly named people like Sting and Bono. They also do that mark I forget the name of over the second e in words like reenactment. Irritating.

    @RossinDetroit: I prefer when people correctly use the diaeresis in words like reëlect or coöperate, but sadly the NYT doesn’t. The New Yorker is just about the only one left.

    I also prefer referring to people politely, as in “Mr. Obama.” Sports people can be referred to by last name alone, but they’re the only ones I can think of where it doesn’t annoy me.

    I’m not watching the show, but CBS radio has been reporting that Alec Baldwin did a joke, presumably in a prerecorded piece about Rupert Murdoch. Fox cut the joke, so Baldwin is going to skip being on the show.

    CNN has an article on their website called “Priest pens spiritual survival guide.” Unremarkable except that every time I’ve put CNN in Google today (Safari on iPad if that matters) it is listed as “Priest penis spiritual survival guide.” I keep going back and checking because I am now placing bets with myself how long it’s going to stay that way uncorrected. It’s been up for hours.

    And you know what? I will place another bet that this post is going to be tossed into moderation because I think penis is a forbidden spam word. But my comment makes no sense if I have to disguise the word penis.

    Perhaps of all time. Weird thing is that he’s not a horrible head coach–he’s just a mediocre one. How many times has he taken a team with solid talent and gotten less out of them than expected? It’s the story of his career.

    I am pissed that piece of shit Joel Surnow’s The Kennedys won an award (Barry Pepper, Lead Actor in a Mini-series).

    And puzzled by Melissa McCarthy’s award for Best Actress in a Comedy. She’s a likable presence, but I don’t see how McCarthy wins in a field that includes Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Martha Plimpton.

    I’m glad Martindale and Dinklage got the recognition they deserve, though.
