I’m passing out. Went through two full bags of potatoes for french fries, 12 lbs of hamburger, 36 hot dogs, 24 drum sticks, 12 chicken thighs, pounds of cole claw and bake beans, everyone was well fed and content, my house is now clean, and I am off to spoon Lily while rocking Little Feat. Why? Because Little Feat is the greatest band that ever existed, and if you disagree with me, well then fuck off.

I graduated college in May (finishing after a 15 year hiatus), I have over $60,000 in student loan debt, and I’ve been unemployed for over a year. I’ve never worked a job that paid me more than $12/hour, and most of those have been shitty service jobs with no benefits and long hours (I’ve walked out of more shit jobs than you’ve probably worked in your life). I’ve lived without health insurance my entire adult life, and below the poverty line for most of it. On other sites, I’ve been accused of being an Obamabot so…whatever. The double post is an accident, but I’m not going to apologize for being peeved that a guy who took Bull Connors’ batons to the fucking head was turned away by what is, from all appearances, an absolute clusterfuck of dippy nonsense (I first saw the video through a link at Oliver Willis’ site btw). If that doesn’t bother you–even a little–then you and I probably are playing for completely different teams.
And if you can’t explain to me with a single good reason why they would treat a Civil Rights icon like this, then it’s because you can’t and your only retort is to accuse me of being something that I am most certainly not (I was a Democratic committee member in my home county between 2006-2008 btw). It makes me absolutely sick that some twisted rightwing fuckstick is gettin’ his jollies off laughing at John Lewis’ expense. If you’re too fucking stupid to not let yourselves be exploited by the right, then I genuinely feel sorry for you, because I honestly do not want to see that happen.
I was absolutely forthcoming in who videotaped this (and nothing is done to the video; the rightwing asshole just sits back, films it, and laughs) and I doubt if I was some Koch brothers’ hireling I’d be calling out the incident for being used the way its being used (which never would have happened if they would have just let the man speak). What kind of fucking movement do you think you’re building when you turn away a Civil Rights icon, someone who was willing to die so that others could be free? If you’ve reached a point where you can’t address criticism like an adult and your only response is to accuse people of being something they aren’t for raising criticisms, then you and your movement are going nowhere. At some point, you have to wake up and realize what some of this looks like to people who are otherwise sympathetic.

Just saw them again in July at a little outdoor stage called Indian Ranch on a nothingburger of a lake in nowhere, central Mass. in front of probably no more than 400 people. They played everything I wanted to hear and then some, and they just fucking rocked. so. hard. They’re so tight, so good, so into the music. Absolutely the best band in America. Sorry Cole, it’s true, and you can still see them.

Sure. This was a writer in Spin getting his hyperbole on for professional purposes. He did qualify the endorsement with ‘right now’, rather than ‘of all time’ which could mean ‘in my office after six Coronas and a bong hit’. But it was also ’92 and people were still undecided whether Grunge was a real thing or a nasty prank. A Mitch Froom produced album of distinctive, professionally written and played songs pulled a lot of critical weight.

Yeah, they bring it every night. I saw them once at one of those contrived “fair” type events, on a makeshift stage in front of the Fairfax County Administration Center, and they blew the roof off the entire DC Metro Area.
I think their live shows have gotten stronger since Cougar Estrada joined the band on drums. Don’t know where they found him, but that boy can play. As you are now undoubtedly aware.

John Cole: I am an old time Little Feat fan and saw them in 1978 on the Waiting for Columbus tour a year before Lowell died. And I took my then 14 year old son to see them here near Philly a year and a half ago. Different–no Lowell and no Richie Hayward–but still great after all these years.
Since I know you love Feat, I want to point you to some great old stuff, available for free download at the Internet Music Archive. My personal favorite is a live radio concert Feat did on WLIR in 1974. (That was my FM station when I was in HS.) There’s lots more out there for the taking–all kinds of concerts from the 1970’s to today, but the radio concert is fantastic.
