Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

We still have time to mess this up!

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Tick tock motherfuckers!

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

I’m passing out. Went through two full bags of potatoes for french fries, 12 lbs of hamburger, 36 hot dogs, 24 drum sticks, 12 chicken thighs, pounds of cole claw and bake beans, everyone was well fed and content, my house is now clean, and I am off to spoon Lily while rocking Little Feat. Why? Because Little Feat is the greatest band that ever existed, and if you disagree with me, well then fuck off.

They got a place down Kentucky
    Right down near Ohio
Where you can watch the planes at night
People line up to watch each flight
    I said watchin’ them planes
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinkin’ ’bout my red head dream
If I could only see her tonight
    Oh Atlanta, Oh Atlanta!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlanta, got to get back to you
Well you can drop me off on Peachtree
I got to feel that Georgia sun
And the women there in Atlanta
They make you awfully glad you come
    I said watchin’ them planes
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinking ’bout my crazy dream
If I could only be there tonight
    Oh Atlanta, Oh Atlanta!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlanta, got to get back to you
We make a day and how just you and me
But the music plays all night
They got the boogie band blowin’ that’s bound for hell
And when they get to movin’ they never stop
You just keep on playin’ that down home beat
You just keep on layin’ it down hot
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinkin’ bout my red haired dream
If I could only see her tonight
    Oh Atlanta, Oh Atlanta!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlanta, got to get back to you

There is a record coming out at the end of this month that could represent the greatest array of instrumental chops ever assembled in an American recording studio.

Goat Rodeo is Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer.

“Surging Cain Takes Aim At Sagging Perry”

OK, someone needs to explain how Ron Paul won the Values Voters Summit. I know I’ll be hearing it non-stop from the friends I have who are big Ron Paul supporters about how this proves he can and will win the nomination, and beat Obama because he’s the candidate for “peace”, while Obama is the candidate for “war”.

    Sigh….

  41. 41.

    Anne Laurie

    October 9, 2011 at 4:50 am

@BruinKid: This has happened every time Paul was running: His supporters buy voting tickets in bulk, vote as a bloc, and then proclaim RON R WIN!

    From Dave Weigel (Libertarian!):

In a post-vote press conference, FRC President Tony Perkins made sure to note that 600 people had bought tickets for Saturday only — a none-too-subtle hint that Paul’s supporters had over-represented themselves.
    __
“Do the math,” said Perkins. “Ron Paul and his campaign are very well organized.”
    __
The rule about straw polls: They only matter if someone’s trying to win. In 2010, Rep. Mike Pence made an effort to take the straw poll, and he won it. And then he decided not to run for president. In 2011, the only campaigns with real victory strategys were Ron Paul’s and Rick Santorum’s. This was limited — Paul’s spin-off Campaign for Liberty organization bought tickets, but the presidential campaign didn’t do anything. According to CFL’s John Tate, between their efforts and the indepenent efforts of Paul fans — “some guys rented buses and came down from New York!” — there were 700 summit passes bought by and for the man from Lake Jackson, Texas.

A few dedicated zealots — I mean, supporters — can literally buy a straw-poll win. But so far, they haven’t been successful in taking that strategy into the general primaries, much less the election itself.

An argument could be made that Koch money, unleashed by John Roberts’ Citizens United decision, can now replicate the straw-poll ‘victory’ by bulk-buying advertising to sell their candidate. Fortunately for the rest of us, Dr. Paul’s faithful followers are not a good fit for the Koch-sucker industry, and the Koch-suckers don’t think much of the Paulistas, either.

    soonergrunt

    October 9, 2011 at 4:51 am

@BruinKid: “Values Voters” don’t give a shit about peace vs. war, except as much as war means more dead A-rabs, and that’s a good thing from their perspective. On that front, they won’t be happy with Paul, but he has been a pretty consistent voice for government intervention into the bedrooms of America, and using government’s coercive power to interfere with women and their doctor-patient relationships, and using that same power to keep the gays in the closet. The libertarian part they really like is the whole ‘government shouldn’t prevent you (white people) from buying whatever gun you want. Since unregulated guns and heavily regulated vajayjays and banned gays trumps all with “values voters” he won. That, and his people bought all the damn tickets.

@AA+ Bonds: Dude, that’s sad. Just plane fucking sad.

I graduated college in May (finishing after a 15 year hiatus), I have over $60,000 in student loan debt, and I’ve been unemployed for over a year. I’ve never worked a job that paid me more than $12/hour, and most of those have been shitty service jobs with no benefits and long hours (I’ve walked out of more shit jobs than you’ve probably worked in your life). I’ve lived without health insurance my entire adult life, and below the poverty line for most of it. On other sites, I’ve been accused of being an Obamabot so…whatever. The double post is an accident, but I’m not going to apologize for being peeved that a guy who took Bull Connors’ batons to the fucking head was turned away by what is, from all appearances, an absolute clusterfuck of dippy nonsense (I first saw the video through a link at Oliver Willis’ site btw). If that doesn’t bother you–even a little–then you and I probably are playing for completely different teams.

And if you can’t explain to me with a single good reason why they would treat a Civil Rights icon like this, then it’s because you can’t and your only retort is to accuse me of being something that I am most certainly not (I was a Democratic committee member in my home county between 2006-2008 btw). It makes me absolutely sick that some twisted rightwing fuckstick is gettin’ his jollies off laughing at John Lewis’ expense. If you’re too fucking stupid to not let yourselves be exploited by the right, then I genuinely feel sorry for you, because I honestly do not want to see that happen.

I was absolutely forthcoming in who videotaped this (and nothing is done to the video; the rightwing asshole just sits back, films it, and laughs) and I doubt if I was some Koch brothers’ hireling I’d be calling out the incident for being used the way its being used (which never would have happened if they would have just let the man speak). What kind of fucking movement do you think you’re building when you turn away a Civil Rights icon, someone who was willing to die so that others could be free? If you’ve reached a point where you can’t address criticism like an adult and your only response is to accuse people of being something they aren’t for raising criticisms, then you and your movement are going nowhere. At some point, you have to wake up and realize what some of this looks like to people who are otherwise sympathetic.

Would you want to win, or be seen winning, the Firedoglake Straw poll, right before the real voting starts? And it seems to me, at this point, if you really want to win the whole damned thing, shouldn’t you be focusing on Iowa and New Hampshire and other states?

    @burnspbesq:

Just saw them again in July at a little outdoor stage called Indian Ranch on a nothingburger of a lake in nowhere, central Mass. in front of probably no more than 400 people. They played everything I wanted to hear and then some, and they just fucking rocked. so. hard. They’re so tight, so good, so into the music. Absolutely the best band in America. Sorry Cole, it’s true, and you can still see them.

    @RossInDetroit:

I recall when Kiko came out that a writer in Spin stated they were the greatest American rock band of the time, and challenged anyone who thought they weren’t to make a case for someone else.

I love me some Los Lobos, but anyone who uses the term “greatest American rock band of all time” about any band in particular is just trolling.

    @jaywillie:

One criticism I’m hearing being repeated by the media and the right-wingers is that the protest is unfocused — implying that it’s hippie-like and will soon dissipate just as soon as someone pulls out the munchies. This is how they dismiss the protest and what they’re protesting against. Maybe this was an effort to counter that perception.

I can’t believe it’s based on disrespect. That’s what Fox and Koch would like you to believe. And, basically, you’re legitimizing it by spreading it around. You’re doing their work for them.

Sure. This was a writer in Spin getting his hyperbole on for professional purposes. He did qualify the endorsement with ‘right now’, rather than ‘of all time’ which could mean ‘in my office after six Coronas and a bong hit’. But it was also ’92 and people were still undecided whether Grunge was a real thing or a nasty prank. A Mitch Froom produced album of distinctive, professionally written and played songs pulled a lot of critical weight.

    @Cat Lady:

Yeah, they bring it every night. I saw them once at one of those contrived “fair” type events, on a makeshift stage in front of the Fairfax County Administration Center, and they blew the roof off the entire DC Metro Area.

I think their live shows have gotten stronger since Cougar Estrada joined the band on drums. Don’t know where they found him, but that boy can play. As you are now undoubtedly aware.

@burnspbesq: Also, as long as we’re talking LA bands in the 80s, I have to give a shout out to the Minutemen.

And belated congrats on your check!

Why is Little Feat the best band that ever existed? Shut up, that’s why.

All I want in this life of mine is some good clean fun
All I want in this life and time is some hit and run

Wouldn’t it be great if we could reanimate Lowell George–
and by the way, Molly Ivins to help us through this grim season

John Cole: I am an old time Little Feat fan and saw them in 1978 on the Waiting for Columbus tour a year before Lowell died. And I took my then 14 year old son to see them here near Philly a year and a half ago. Different–no Lowell and no Richie Hayward–but still great after all these years.

Since I know you love Feat, I want to point you to some great old stuff, available for free download at the Internet Music Archive. My personal favorite is a live radio concert Feat did on WLIR in 1974. (That was my FM station when I was in HS.) There’s lots more out there for the taking–all kinds of concerts from the 1970’s to today, but the radio concert is fantastic.
