Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

This blog will pay for itself.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

People are weird.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Bark louder, little dog.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

So very ready.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

National Ground Game and Unfuck America – Funding a Campus Event in North Carolina

We are less than $2,000 from our $7,500 goal to fund the on-campus event in North Carolina last week.

These events are:

  • educational
  • motivational
  • inspirational
  • voter registration events

As you know, UnF**ck America (UFA) was originally founded as liberal counter-programming to Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA’s grift-fests.  With TPUSA (hopefully) approaching its death throes, UFA is holding its own stand-alone events and setting up campus clubs to register, motivate and turnout college-aged Democratic voters.

This is fun and creative and different from a lot of the other groups we support.  But Dems lost the social media war last time around, and this is an opportunity to be a part of making sure that doesn’t happen again this time!

In case you missed the “ask me anything “ post last week Q & A with National Ground Game/UFA founder Zee Cohen Sanchez, here are some highlights:

The primary draws at a UFA event are “influencers” popular with the college crowd (such as liberal live-streamer Destiny), and “prove me wrong” booths designed to provoke conversation about significant political issues. Highlights of events are recorded for social media distribution.

There are voter registration booths at all events, and post-event voter registration drives with campus Ground Game chapters.

One of the big takeaways from these events is how shallow the ties to the Republican party are with many right-leaning students. Many of them are still forming their political identities at this age, and positive interactions with liberal voices “stack up over time” and change minds.

UFA regularly hears from students that its events and influencers helped pull them out of the “red pill pipeline” (online white supremacy radicalization). Other testimonials include: “I didn’t think I could be a Democrat until I heard (Democratic podcaster) Adam Mockler.

National Ground game and UFA operate nationwide, but Balloon Juice has (and will) only focus on events in strategically targeted jurisdictions (generally swing states). Zee told me that our targeting toward particular states and campus inspired their group to create an “Adopt a Stop page” where donors at any level can chose the campus their donations go toward.

UFA is reaching the youth vote where they are – and on their terms and in their “language.”    BJ peeps may be just as unfamiliar with Destiny or Adam Mockler as we are with many of the Saturday Night Live hosts and musical guests, but these individuals resonate with the college crowd.

Zee and UFA are harnessing their influence to mold young minds and turn out Democratic voters.

Public University Yanks Permit – Unfuck America News & Angel Match

by WaterGirl|  March 21, 20266:41 pm| 41 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2026

So… Erika Kirk found out on Thursday that the Unfuck America folks had an event scheduled at ASU.  (That’s one of the two Spring events we were funding.)

Dare I say that she was not happy?

Apparently Kirk or someone from Turning Point USA raised a ruckus, and ASU yanked the Unfuck America permit that ASU had previously issued!

ASU is now being sued for yanking the permit.  Public universities don’t get to play favorites.

So we’re no longer funding the ASU event, so the goal is now $7,500 instead of $15,000.

I would love it if we can give them a boost and pick back up on our fundraising for this group.

Angel Match for National Ground Game / Unfuck America Events in Swing States

We have an angel match!  Matching up to $25 per person for a total of $250!

I believe this is an opportunity – Unfuck America is one of the ways we can potentially make a huge difference this year.

Consider these rallies the marriage of “vibe” events and traditional GOTV efforts.

The rallies are fun, well-attended, simultaneously live-streamed and filled with influencers and internet celebrities most of the Balloon Juice demographic has never heard of!  Young voters are entertained, registered, inspired and (later) pushed to the polls!

I am super excited about what this group is up to.  We got our asses kicked by the other side on social media in 2024, and I see this as our chance to get in that game in a meaningful way.  It’s new and different for us, but in a good way, I think.  Cutting-edge efforts that we can be part of.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t continue to support the kinds of work we have supported in the past.  Of course we will!  Think “both and” not “either or”.

Many people are feeling discouraged because they have not been given a clear reason to reengage.  I believe it is our job to give them that reason and that sense of purpose again.  There has never been a more important time to invest in field work and youth organizing so we can win the midterms and decisively move past the MAGA era.

The Youth Vote – Fundraising Starts Today!

The Youth Vote!

Allow me to reintroduce the charismatic Zee Cohen-Sanchez from the National Ground Game and Unfuck America, with the latter directed to the youth vote.  Balloon Juice first met Zee when we helped her organization, National Ground Game, get last-minute boots on the ground for the April 1, 2025 Florida Special Congressional elections.  The Dems lost both races, but they overperformed their 2024 result by 14 and 17.4 percentage points, respectively.  The Republicans were rattled.

The youth vote in 2024 largely tanked, and a distressingly high percentage of them (especially young white men) were Trump supporters or Trump curious.  But numerous surveys show his support with the young pups is plummeting.

This is an opportunity, and Unfuck America is one of the ways we can potentially make a huge difference.

Track Record in 2025

Zee’s new organization, Unfuck America (UFA), was originally founded to counter-program Charlie Kirk rallies with liberal voices and left-leaning influencers.  But…um….that strategy had to abruptly change.  UFA is now organizing its own stand-alone on-campus GOTV rallies with liberal influencers, TikTok celebrities and campus Democratic Clubs.  And canvassers.   Lots and lots of canvassers!

You may recall that last fall Balloon Juice underwrote that effort on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, in an assembly district held by the Republicans for multiple cycles.  We flipped it – and helped run up Abigail Spanberger’s numbers.  Youth voters swung the races.   According to the Virginia Mercury:

“Youth voters concentrated on and around college campuses specifically played a major role in delivering Democrats a win in Virginia.”

Youth Vote Delivers Democratic Victory in Virginia’s Governor Race

In the weeks leading up to the election, much of the conversation focused on suburban swing voters in Northern Virginia – many of whom have deeply felt the effects of federal jobs cuts and shutdown furloughs. While these groups did contribute to Democrats’ gains statewide, young voters helped swing the race.

While individual voter data won’t be released until next year, using precinct-level data, we’re able to see that areas with high concentrations of younger voters, aged 18 to 29, shifted dramatically toward Democrats. Ultimately, this contributed to an overall Democratic margin of 336,000 votes in precincts with high concentration of young voters. Precincts with large numbers of young voters shifted 4.7 points toward Spanberger compared to 2024—a shift about six times larger than in precincts with fewer young voters.

Even voters at Liberty University in Lynchburg, a traditionally deep-red stronghold that Donald Trump won in 2024, shifted margins +9.1 for Abigail Spanberger.

Youth voters concentrated on and around college campuses specifically played a major role in delivering Democrats a win in Virginia. George Mason University’s precincts in Fairfax posted the largest Democratic swing statewide at 10.3 points, followed by precincts with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and James Madison University in Harrisonburg at nearly 7 points each.

The largest shift to the Democrats in Virginia was at George Mason University in already reliable Fairfax County.  The second biggest over performance?  Virginia Tech!  I can’t help but think that the rally we funded in Blacksburg helped!

Let’s do this!

Fundraising Efforts – Part 1: Overview of Key States

Fired Up and Ready to Go?

Quick Overview

Political fundraising season is upon us!

It feels like the zeitgeist is shifting.  I feel a sense of hope, but there’s an enormous amount of work to do.

We’re just getting started with our efforts this election to raise funds and identify and encourage volunteer opportunities, at least from a public perspective!  But there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that you never see before we even get to this point.

We have been in touch with most of our former partners to determine whether they’re a good fit for this election cycle.

We have phone calls lined up with them this week, so stay tuned for more posts addressing our strategy for supporting those groups and candidates where our money can make the most difference.  These posts will sketch out the first piece of the strategy as of now – which states we want to focus on, and why.

We will adjust details of the strategy, as we always do, as events unfold.

As always, our goal is to be as strategic as possible to ensure that our money and efforts are meaningful and have an impact, not like grains of salt in the ocean.

The Strategy

The strategy for a mid-term election differs somewhat from Presidential years.  The concept of “swing state” for the electoral college is not as relevant.  Instead, we’re looking at states where our GOTV funding efforts would make the most difference:

  • competitive Senate seats
  • competitive House seats
  • state legislatures that can be flipped
  • key executive offices like governor, secretary of state, attorney general
  • supermajorities that can be busted, or gained!
  • state Supreme Court majorities to retain, or flip!
  • meaningful ballot initiatives

And guess what?  A lot of the same states still show up!  This post will provide a rundown on the states where supporting registration and GOTV efforts will have the most impact.

Below are the states where funding boots on the ground – as opposed to individual candidates – will have meaningful impact on multiple fronts.

The Key States

Michigan

There’s a lot going on in Michigan!

  • Statewide races. The Democratic Secretary of State, Attorney General and Governor are all term limited. All are critical to election protection.  The primary is August 26th.
  • Legislature. We could potentially gain a trifecta!  Dems are up one seat in the state Senate and down four seats in the statehouse.
  • Congress.  There’s an open (currently Democratic) Senate seat, with three major Dem candidates in a primary race.  There are at least three competitive (as of now) House seats, including one open seat and one Republican toss up.
  • Supreme Court. Two Dem seats are up, but the majority (6-1 Dem to Republican) is not threatened.  Still, it’s important to run up the margins wherever we can.

Wisconsin

On Wisconsin!  The Badger State is critical to, especially at the statewide level.

  • Attorney General – Josh Kaul is up for reelection. In Wisconsin, the AG has election supervision responsibilities instead of the Secretary of State, so it’s a two-fer.  This is possibly an “early money” fundraiser along with the AZ state-wide seats.
  • Governor – There is an open seat, as the current Democratic governor is termed out.  The primary is August 1.
  • Legislature – Here’s the big one!  There is a great opportunity to pick up several seats in this – the first election since non-partisan redistricting.  Currently Republicans hold the Senate 18-15, and the House 54-45.  There is some real flipping potential with the new maps and a blue wave.
  • Congress – There’s a vulnerable house seat held by idiot Republican Van Orden. We supported his opponent last cycle (Rebecca Cooke), who is running again.
  • Supreme Court – There’s one Supreme Court seat vacated by a conservative; if another conservative wins, it won’t change the make up of the court, but if we win, it helps cement the majority for years.   I like our chances to win this one on April 7!
  • Ballot Initiatives – There are also a couple of obnoxious ballot measures – one prohibiting the closure of churches during “health emergencies,” and the other prohibiting the government from granting “preferential treatment” based on race, gender, etc. A flaming defeat would warm the cockles of my heart.

Arizona

After Michigan and Wisconsin, Arizona may be the next most impactful state.

  • Statewide races – Secretary of State Fontes, Governor Hobbs and AG Mayes are all up for reelection. We supported all three last cycle.  If you recall, Mayes won by less than 300 votes are a recount.  Our money clearly made a difference!
  • State Legislature – There are opportunities to possibly flip or narrow the Republican leads. The Senate is 17-13 Republican, and the House is 33-27 Republican. Our of our partners, Worker Power, is very focused on targeting vulnerable state legislative districts with their registration and GOTV campaigns.
  • Congress – There are two vulnerable Republican Congressional seats: Ciscomani in SE Arizona, and a Republican seat held by David Schweikert, who is running for Governor.  In a wave year, Republican Eli Crane may be vulnerable as well. His district has a substantial Native American presence.  There is no open Senate seat.

Nevada

Nevada is another key state, even if less so than those above.

  • Statewide races – Cisco Aguilar (D) is up for re-election as Secretary of State. The AG is open (the Democrat was term limited), and the Governor is Republican, but vulnerable.  The Legislature is solidly Democratic, so not an issue.
  • Ballot Initiative – Question 6 is on the ballot to enshrine abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution. It has to pass twice.  It already did in 2024.  This is so important.
  • Congress – Three of Nevada’s four congressional districts are held by Democrats. One is somewhat vulnerable (Susie Lee), who we supported in the past.  We’ll keep an eye on that race for later.
  • Supreme Court – The Nevada Supreme court has 7 non-partisan members. (Non-partisan in name only, of course.) Three are Republican, three are Democrats and the seventh isn’t affiliated, but her bio suggests a left lean (Public Defender, mental health advocate).  There are two retention seats up, both Republican.  Solidifying a majority would be great!

North Carolina

North Carolina is another impactful state, even if less so than the top three.

  • Senate and House – Roy Cooper in NC is a real opportunity to pick up a Senate seat.  In NC we’re watching one vulnerable Democrat, Don Davis; otherwise the other seats seem safe, at least for now.
  • State Houses – In North Carolina we can help bust/prevent a super-majority. There is a very narrow Republican super-majority in the North Carolina Senate, and the Republicans are currently one seat short of a super-majority in the House.  There is a Democratic governor, so this matters, notwithstanding the extreme gerrymandering of the state Government.   The state-wide offices are not up this cycle.
  • Ballot Initiative – There’s an oppressive ballot initiative requiring photographic ID for all voters, and not just the ones voting in person.  Not good!
  • Supreme Court – Anita Earls is up for reelection on the State Supreme Court. We must keep her on the State Supreme Court as well as keep our three Democratic judges on the State Appeals Court. We must hold these seats so that in 2028 we have the chance to take back the Supreme Court.  When Rs got the majority, they went back to the old gerrymandered maps, so, just like in Wisconsin, the State Supreme Court is the key to citizens being able to choose their candidates rather than the other way around.  Looking far into the future, the goal is to get a Dem majority on the Appeals Court. Every win provides the basis for future wins.

A Peek Ahead

It probably goes without saying, but the FIVE states above are not the only states we will be active in.

The Senate and the House are key, of course.

Candidate fundraising?   We are always scouting candidates where our money can make a difference, especially those overlooked or underfunded by the big dogs.

On the local level, if we can help flip a state legislature or break a supermajority, we’ll consider it.  We’ll be watching Congressional races, with an eye on avoiding the marquee/bandwagon races and funding the stretch candidates who can win in a wave.  By way of example there, we’re in touch with the Dan Osborne Senate campaign in Nebraska to discuss helping to fund Nebraska field offices again.

As a general matter, we hold our fire on candidates until later in the year, except when we don’t!  Sometimes it’s early money and yeast and all that, especially for key local races.

What say you?   This election is so critical.  I am very much hoping that some of the discouragement I see in the comments won’t keep us from being The Little Engine That Could again this time around.

Anybody fired up and ready to go?

Balloon Juice 2026 Fundraising Efforts: Part 1

On Wisconsin!

Quick overview

Fundraising season is upon us!

We have been in touch with most of our former partners to determine if they’re a good fit for this election cycle.

We have phone calls lined up with them next week.   Stay tuned over the course of the next few days for a couple more posts addressing our ever-evolving strategy of supporting those groups and (later) candidates where our money can make the most difference.

Is it just me?

Is it just me, or does it feel like the zeitgeist is shifting?  The widespread scorn inspired by Elon Musk, the illegal wars, the murder of American citizens by our government, the vindication of Cricket the dog with the demise of Kristi Noem, etc.   I feel hope, but there’s an enormous amount of work to do.

What’s next

Allow me to reintroduce the charismatic Zee Cohen-Sanchez from the National Ground Game and Unfuck America, with the latter directed to the youth vote.  Balloon Juice first met Zee when we helped her organization, National Ground Game, get last-minute boots on the ground for the April 1, 2025 Florida Special Congressional elections.  The Dems lost both races, but they overperformed their 2024 result by 14 and 17.4 percentage points, respectively.  The Republicans were rattled.

This is an opportunity, and Unfuck America is one of the ways we can potentially make a huge difference.

More about Unfuck America

Unfuck America already has 20 college chapters with the goal of reaching as many as 500 schools by the end of the year.  Four rallies are scheduled for next month:

  • Arizona State
  • UCLA
  • UC Berkeley
  • North Carolina State

Plans are in the making for a fall tour that would include schools in swing states we are targeting this year, such as:

  • Michigan State
  • Wisconsin
  • University of Nevada at Las Vegas (or Reno)
  • University of Georgia
  • University of Arizona

Super exciting opportunities

I am super excited about what this group is up to.  We got our asses kicked by the other side on social media in 2024, and I see this as our chance to get in that game in a meaningful way.  It’s new and different for us, but in a good way, I think – cutting-edge stuff that we can be part of.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t continue to support the kinds of work we have supported in the past.  Of course we will!  Think “both and” not “either or”.

So what’s the plan?

We’re looking at underwriting rallies at strategic locations (for example, swing state schools in Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nevada, etc.) and funding a field organization position (contingent up on them finding matches to help fund the position).

Part A:  Fund these 2 upcoming Spring events:

  • AZ State on 3/23
  • NC State on 4/13

Part B: Fund 1/3 of a field organization position ($35k from us) with this focus:

  • getting student chapters set up in swing states
  • student chapters make it significantly faster, easier and less expensive to set up school events
  • student chapters and school events allow them to partner with local GOTV efforts

Part C:  Fund events this Fall in:

  • Georgia
  • NC
  • Wisconsin
  • NV
  • Michigan
  • AZ

Maybe even Texas, depending on how things are looking in the Fall.

So, what say you guys?

It’s all hands on deck time.

What do you think of these efforts?

Are you up for something new?

If so, is anyone up for a BJ zoom with Zee?

I am pretty sure it’s not possible to talk with Zee and not come away inspired!

We can set up a zoom if there’s interest.
