Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

“But what about the lurkers?”

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

How stupid are these people?

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Ny Shooting

by John Cole|  July 23, 20032:22 pm| 2 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

There has been a shooting in the NYC council chambers, and at least two people have been wounded:

A man fired shots in City Hall this afternoon, hitting at least two people and sending city council members diving beneath their desks. Police officers swarmed into the building in search of the assailant.

Witnesses said the man appeared to be holding a silver handgun, which he was aiming at another individual in the balcony of the City Council chamber, which is on the second floor. Screams reverberated through the halls amid the gunfire.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in his office area on the other side of City Hall and was not hurt.

Mayor Bloomberg said the attack appeared to be “random act” and not terrorism.

Brooklyn Councilman James Davis was wounded, and the NY Times had that up before, but removed it- probably until the family is notified.

My question- How long before both sides of the gun issue try to score points on this tragedy?

Paltry Pirates

If my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates were a traditional business, they would be Enron:

Asked if the Pirates could be facing a payroll cut similar to the one they had after the 1996 season, McClatchy didn’t hesitate. “It could be … I’m not saying that will happen because I don’t know what moves [General Manager] Dave Littlefield is going to make. We took it back to almost $9 million in ’97. I don’t think we’ll do anything close to that this time. But am I going to continue to blindly write checks for unproductive players? No. We have to get this franchise back to the break-even point. It’s going to be painful.”

You think only a bumbling ownership group could take the promise of the best new ballpark in America and turn it into such a financial nightmare so quickly?

Of course, you do, but you might be surprised to hear what McClatchy said about that.

“This is our fault. I don’t think anyone can say we didn’t try to put together a winning team, but we made some bad decisions. I have to take the blame for that.”

The baseball season is now over. Here we go Steelers, here we go!

Via Andrew Sullivan, this disturbing graph (which he got off the Free Republic):

Makes me want to vomit. Remember this the next time the lying Democrats claim Bush is gutting spending.

Scrappleface on Dean

Excellent:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced today that Vermont Gov. Howard Dean would join the agency’s next mission to Mars.

The trip to the Red Planet is part of Gov. Dean’s presidential campaign strategy which aims to maximize the distance between the candidate and the average American voter.

Gov. Dean, already a vocal opponent of the liberation of Iraq and a proponent of homosexual unions, said he still feels too close to the American voter.

“The other Democrat candidates for president are mere clones of George Bush,” said Gov. Dean. “When I’m standing on the surface of Mars, passionately denouncing things most Americans support and advocating things most Americans oppose, people will know I’m the real Democrat in this race.”

Am I Blue?

I have had days like this:

oops.jpg

Fourteen-year-old female polar bear, named ‘Pelusa’, sticks her claw through the bars of her cage at the Mendoza Zoo, 1100 kilometers (690 miles) northwest of Buenos Aires, July 21, 2003. Normally white, Pelusa turned violet after veterinarians administered a medicine to treat her for a skin condition. Her veterinarians said her coat should turn normal again within a month. Ba’athists

Tacitus has a great post about the extent of Ba’athist loyalty and why the 3rd ID is in theatre longer than expected.

Before people start crowing about “how the military didn’t have a plan,” let me nip that nonsense in the bud and point out that this is the sort of unforeseen development for which you simply can not plan. At any rate, go read.
